I've never seen The Ladies' Dressmaker, but I can assuredly say that Charles Morey did a fantastic job of bringing to life an old, forgotten play and making it so much more bombastic and comedic through a more modern lens.
One thing about old French farces and Restoration Comedies, is that I often find myself trying to figure out what's being said and when I finally do understand, the joke itself isn't as funny. Kind of like a friend explaining their joke and thus losing the actual humor in their joke. But The Ladies Man takes all of the tropes, cliches, and embellishments of those old comedies and gives it a more contemporary dialogue to deliver a truly outstanding comedy.
I was dying in the theater, having seen this staged for the first time, and when this play is given the right director and cast... it really shines! It's got humor all across the spectrum, and by the time you're finished you won't forget how much insane and stupid shit you've seen on stage. But Morey knows that this comedy he's writing is incredibly stupid, and plays on that (even with how he structures the plot) to make something old and familiar, but at the same time so fresh and new. I give The Ladies Man a very high recommendation.
