The Jewish Son: A Novel
A breathtaking short novel about the complicated feelings of hate and pity in familial love by an acknowledged Latin American master.
A brilliant and dark tour de force, Jewish Son presents the delicate archeology of the stubbornness of a boy who demands his parents’ attention. It is a brutal confession of the lies necessary to win a space of approval in a troubled family, a treatise on the excesses of love and the paradoxical lack of affection that is never enough, an accomplished narration of childhood from the point of view of the adult gaze, and a rewriting of Kafka’s Letter to His Father .
As his father’s imminent death becomes an ever more concrete reality with surgeries, caregivers, sedatives and his mother grows obsessed with visits to the rabbi and amasses saint cards and Buddhist prayers, the narrator evokes the remnants of the rejection that pervaded his childhood.
Without yielding to the idealization of youth or to the delight in pain before physical decay and death, Guebel dissects, beautifully although with discomfort, his very early conversion to the dream of literature as an act of reparation.

3,5 - An erudite little memoir in which the Argentine author Daniel Guebel explores his traumatic childhood and the relation with his abusive father and his mother acting as accomplice and taking his father's side.
It is not an easy read, because of the subject matter but also because of the complicated sentence. However, once I got used to the tone and as the book progresses with Daniel taking care of his older and eventually dying father, I read with admiration.
I am not sure why the title underlines Guebel's Jewish descent as there isn't much specifically Jewish about this memoir.
Many thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

“Its clear that when a father is strong, the son must be even more so, and if he cannot be, he has to accept his own weakness, accustom himself to living amidst the ruins until he learns to construct a strength of a different nature and order than that which characterized his predecessor, given that what has been inherited is of no use.”
“Aeneas puts the future of a city and the life of its people at risk to haul the burden of the past. Anchises will die and be buried at Drepana. Now I am a worn out Aeneas carrying an Anchises on his shoulders, and at every moment he weighs more heavily and plunges me deeper into the mud. When my whole body vanished from the surface (expect perhaps my head) he’ll leap off and abandon me there.”
A deeply moving, beautifully written, heartfelt and heartbreaking tale of a complicated father and son relationship. Highly recommend.

I recently read another book about Jews in Argentina. I hoped this book would be a bit more engaging and provide a little more information on Argentinian Jews. The book seemed to be autobiographical, starting off as a stubborn toddler who refused to eat. Then there were a string of random stories mostly focusing on the father-son relationship. I would have abandoned it, but it was only 108 pages. I think I am just going to stay away from books about Jews in Argentina.

This ticked all the right boxes for me - Jewish family in South America, love, destruction, death. But just didn't at all work for me. I never got deeply engaged enough to care, kept getting characters and stories confused, finished the book but didn't sort it out.

Me gustó.

An intense and biographical story about a complex father-son relationship. It was short but speaks to the reader in a unique way.

beautifully sad.
