At first Aaron Grantley couldn't see why his best friend would throw away eight good years of marriage for the likes of Charly Allenby. But before long he couldn't imagine any man--married or otherwise--not losing his head over her.
Charly felt as if she'd been run over by a steamroller. Aaron Grantley was presumptuous, overbearing, impossible to reason with--and hopelessly attractive.
The fire in his eyes at her resistance reminded Charly of another man who'd loved a challenge, too--outside their marriage. An easy conquest had held no interest for him!

Note to self: this is the one where the H/h babysit two kids for a weekend while they are at daggers drawn with each other. (He thinks she's having an affair with his married best friend. She knows he's trying to outbid her for a manor house she wants to buy for a children's hospital/rehab facility).
Boogenhagen has all the details in her spoiler review. I agree with her that it is an okay read. The hero's jealousy and accusations are ridiculous considering what a upstanding person she is (with considerable personal tragedy).
Re Lady Surrender - CM brings us her version of the martyred h trope, this h a widowed 26 year old who lost her cheating, lying husband and her child a year before the story starts. We meet the 35 year old American H when he forces his way into the apartment the h is using, calling her a trampy gold-digger.
The h is only wearing a robe as she was in the shower when the doorbell rang, and when the H begins informing her that she will get a diamond bracelet if she goes along with the ruse that she is his girlfriend using the pied–à–terre he borrowed from his Dr. BFF who rents the apartment, she is totally confused and feeling vulnerable.
The H then informs her that her seductive charms may have ensnared his married Dr. BFF, but he knows how to use a woman like her and he will do so, as soon as she confirms for Mrs. Dr. BFF that she is indeed the H's girlfriend. He will also straighten out Dr. BFF about cheating on his wife and two kids, as soon as the good Dr. gets back from his business trip.
The h answered the phone when a woman called earlier, the woman was Mrs. Dr' BFF and is now on her way to the apartment to pick up an address book, while wondering if the unknown h is her Dr. hubby's mistress. The h is stunned at this conclusion, but rapidly dresses as Mrs. Dr. rings the doorbell. She plays along with the girlfriend ruse, and because her temper is riled, she throws in an engagement to the H to boot.
After Mrs. Dr. leaves, she and the H get into a verbal exchange - well at least the H does, insulting the h with every word and not letting her get a word in edgewise. The h is glammed up for a meeting, she doesn't have time for the H's shenanigans, and they part with the H saying he has an appointment to fight with a rich witch who is trying to by a big house the H wants for a hotel.
The h is the very wealthy CEO of her father's company. She married at 19 right after her parents died to the son of her father's partner. He conned her into marriage when he wanted complete control of her dad's company. They had a little girl and then the dead husband started cheating left and right, he embarked on an affair in the h's home with her cousin and finally demanded a divorce. The h had no problems with the divorce but refused to hand her father's company over to the man.
The dead hubby took the h's daughter, saying she either gave him the company or she would never see her daughter again. The h was a meeker, milder woman then and did not want to challenge her ex in court. Before anything could be done, the ex got into a car wreck with the little girl and died. The little girl lived in a coma for two months and the Dr. BFF was her physician and did everything he could to help her.
The h owns the building the Dr.'s flat is in and she lets him use it rent free as it is close to the hospital, where he works. Because he often sat with her and her daughter at night before the little girl died, and he lives some distance away, he and the other doctors' he works with use the flat as a pied–à–terre when they can't get home.
The h also lives in the upper floor of the building, but a fire happened in her apartment from a friend's dropped cigarette and she almost died but a neighbor pulled her out. Her apartment is being repaired and she is staying in the one she lets the Dr's use, as no one currently needs it. She is also trying to buy the house the H wants. She plans on turning it into a specialized treatment center for brain injuries and giving it to the Dr. BFF because he tried to help her daughter.
The H is unaware of all of this, ( and I must say I don't think much of him for his assumptions about his supposed Dr. BFF, not to mention the things he assumes about the h with no evidence.) The H is even nastier the next day when he finds out that the h is other interested "rich witch" buyer in the house he wants.
He bursts into her office at her headquarters, making more nasty comments, and now she isn't a gold digger, but a homewrecker who has to buy men's affections. He also informs her that she will be going with him to Mrs. and Dr. BFF's for dinner, the Mrs. invited them and she has to show up or the Mrs. will start to become suspicious again. The h tries to decline but figures that the Dr. will be there and she can put these accusations to bed.
Things don't work out that way tho. Mrs. Dr. is preggers and emotional and Dr. BFF doesn't want to tell her about the plans, cause the baby news is a shock and Mrs. Dr. is very emotionally labile and might jump to the wrong conclusions. The H starts kissing the h just as Mrs. Dr. walks in and they settle down for dinner and more subtle jibes at each other.
The H keeps the mean innuendo's up, the h commits him and her to a weekend watching Dr. BFF kids while he and the Mrs. take a little time off, and the h lays into the H and Dr. BFF for being insensitive to Mrs. Dr. about her pregnancy. Mrs. Dr. and the h start a friendship, but the H is still convinced the h and the Dr. are sneaking around and he resolves to take the Dr's place.
The H starts his psycho stalking of the h, accusing her one minute and trying to get her into bed the next. He invites himself to her evening dinner with another man, bringing his very attractive secretary as his date and then tries to seduce her. He investigates her life with her dead ex and starts making nasty accusations about that too.
The h is attracted to him, his kisses make her weak in the knees, but she is a lot tougher now after the ex experience and she parry his nastiness pretty adroitly. Things come to a boiling point when the H accuses her of sleeping with every man she is in contact with except him, and being an unfit mother, so bad that her ex had to remove her daughter from her care. The h has had enough with that comment, and kicks him out and refuses to see or speak to him.
They still have to do the babysitting weekend tho, and the H feels bad about the unfit comment. He apologizes a little and the h explains the whole situation. The h decides she loves the H. They wind up in bed and then Mrs. and Dr. BFF return and Mrs. Dr. is excited about the h buying the house for the new treatment center.
The H announces they are getting married in three days and the h tries to leave, figuring the H will just make more nasty comments, but he really loves her and he figured out why she bought it. He kept making the nasty comments cause he was jealous and wanted to be her only love, but he realized she hadn't had any other lovers for a long time when they wound up in bed and he figured out she loved him by her response.
They declare eternal love and decide to marry sooner, there is a nice epilogue where they are having their first child, a son, and it is all kittens, puppies, eternal love and babies in HPlandia once again.
This one was okay. The pacing at the end with the h's sudden love attack on the brain and the H's continual and eternal nasty accusations drag the book down in the last two chapter's tho. CM makes the h so saintly that the H's remarks just seem incredibly inane and unperceptive. So while the story had a good start, the ending was anticlimactic.
The H should have figured things out long before he did. The fact that he did not means he is the lowest IQ scoring CEO ever or that CM needed a plot device to manufacture the crisis at the end. Neither option really appeals but the last chapters go quick and the HEA does work so this one isn't totally unreadable.

The minute the furious Aaron Grantley walked arrogantly into Charly Allenby-Harts apartment, they both knew their lives would soon change forever...
The sparks were there between them all the time and the sexual tension just made it more intense.I just love the fact that Aaron fights for her love even when he thinks she sleeps with his married bestfriend. They both are so stubborn and arrogant and i just laughed every time they fought and bickered.Just love Aaron and Charly so much, they got through it together and finally learned to trust their love in each other. Most of Carole Mortimer`s books are BIG 5-STARS to me,and this certainly is one of them.
"Lady Surrender" is the story of Charly and Aaron.
A banter and accusation filled ride, this book has a widowed h and an overbearing but obsessed H. The h has lost her daughter and cheating husband in an accident, and now is a successful businesswoman whose home burns down. She uses her doctor friend's home to crash, only for the H to show up and accuse her of being their mutual friend's mistress. Soon he pretends to be engaged to her when the friend's wife shows up, and we see the lies start building up. Add to them being business rivals, him accusing her of sleeping with EVERY OM, then calling her a bad mother (he apologizes for it but for me it crossed a line), some hot lovemaking, sorta apology, quick forgiveness, followed by a SUPER ADORBS HEA.
Now because of all the back and forth, and the hero acting like a paranoid idiot throughout the book, I am having to reduce stars, but the ending was sweet.
I DNF 30% due to my new pet peeve, it’s a good book otherwise. I will start avoiding all books where the h was cheated on by her ex or om ( not H) and stayed in the relationship like a dumb cow. This never bothered me before but I m sick of this. I can’t relate.
Aside from that, the book is worth about 4 stars, the chemistry was amazing and the h was not annoying for once.
What did piss me off was how she stayed with a cheater for 6 years and ultimately her daughter ends up dying because her hub kidnapped the child to force a divorce/take her company from her.
The guy thinks she is a first rate slut, out to ensnare his much married best friend. So he jumps into the scene, gets fake engaged to her, hoping to keep her away from other men.
But every time he throws allegations at her, she either cares a damn, or she gives him a splendid dressing down !!
Though the guy constantly misunderstands her, there is no malice in his tone. He is miffed that she is surrounded by men all the time, and she refuses to justify her male acquaintances.
In between the slurs, he does turn on the charm and she willingly responds. But that doesn't mean he is forgiven for his stupid ideas.
Seeing the strength of her character, the guy figures out that she is too self assured to be guilty. So he does background research and finds out that she is a rich business woman with a doomed first marriage behind her.
The girl Charly is my kind of woman. Successful career, loads of money of her own, no bitter feelings in spite of her daughter's death, healthy sexual appetite but doesn't bend backwards to please the hero.
The guy is a doubting Thomas but not malicious like some of our aggressive sadistic heroes. This guy knows he is blown away by her charm. He eventually works out why there are so many misleading facts surrounding the girl. And once his mind is at rest, he pursues her with great aplomb.
Super smart, super cool, super rich girl. Dumb but sensitive and charming hero. 4 stars.
I think this is more a 3.5 for me so I rated up to 4. I doubt I would read again but it was good for the time I spent on it. The story’s action starts up immediately . Basically, the hero consistently makes bad assumptions about the h right away. She allows him his delusions instead of clearing it all up. (Hence the book is 180 pages long instead of 10)!However, it’s clear very early on that the H fell into lust/love with the h. In fact his later assumptions about her character are driven from some insane jealousy. The h feels a strong lust/love/hate for the H as well.
What is there to like:
The h is independently wealthy, beautiful, and curvy. She is able to stand up to the H making him feel a little unsure as to where he stands with her. She is not a doormat. She is a modern woman with family values. Meaning she likes having a career but embraces motherhood as well! She has suffered loss, but is very caring of others.
Meanwhile the hero is a take charge kind of guy. He is part of a fake engagement with the h but buys her a real ring, sets a date for marriage(although this is fake) plans on how many children they will have(yet it is fake!!!!!) So what does one glean from this? Basically the fake engagement for the H was about 24hours. He knew he wanted this h permanently very early on, therefore becoming very real to him. His take charge attitude really didn’t give the h a chance not to fall for him!
I would not re-read, there were way too many things I didn't like, but the story did have some aspects that I liked.
I liked that heroine was rich and not dependent on hero for anything. She let him thinks things about her, almost relishing in his misbeliefs at times, because she knew the truth about herself.
I didn't like that the story was told only from heroine's perspective and none from his. I also hated him constantly calling her "lady".
I get that it's a story and there needs to be conflict, but I don't particularly enjoy the hero berating heroine and accusing her of sleeping around everytime she speaks to another man.
It was nice though in the last chapter that he stopped jumping to conclusions about her, he thought about the situation* rationally and came to right conclusion and then they discussed things like adults. It made them ending up together and having a HEA infinitely more believable. P.
* She bought his friend a house to turn into a hospital. The friend was the Doctor who tried to save her daughter. Hero thought they were having an affair.

So much chemistry between them. I love a besotted, jealous H who relentlessly pursues the h and only has eyes for her.
And good characters too. The h in this case wasn’t annoying like many HP h’s. The H was a dream. They had some witty conversations.
The only thing I find strange is that she is a multi-millionaire who sleeps in the appartment of a married male friend because there was a fire in her house.
Why not go to a hotel if you have that many millions to spend that you don’t know what to do with all that money? Why sleep in your married’s friend house without his wife knowing you or knowing anything about her living (temporarily) there.
I mean, she is a beautiful young single blonde, why is she surprised that his wife is jealous? That’s silly of the h.
But other than that, this HP is another testimony of Carole Mortimer’s excellent writing. She is one of my favourite HP vintage writers. Noawadays they don’t write anymore like this, unfortunately.
The H slings baseless accusations throughout the entire book. It got old very quickly. I found it to be a huge character flaw. You can't convince me he's an astute businessman when he fails to use logic and evidence ALL THE TIME. The h has experienced loss and tragedy and I felt for her. How she fell in love with someone with no redeeming qualities who called her a liar and homewrecker 24/7 is outside my realm of understanding.
The story isn't the typical angst of miscommunication. But of denial of the truth as it was. Just turning a blind eye was his MO. He wanted to believe the worst about her at ant cost. And she wasn't wanting to clear up his ideas. She past with her husband kept her at arms length from him. Can stepping back, for him, give him a clear view of what is happening?
Carole Mortimer makes this work, but it beats me how. The man insults the lady from the beginning almost to the end, and the insults are vile.
Reread part because I forgot to check my Goodreads read list and liked much less. H is either too stupid to breathe or too nasty to see the light of day. Taking off a star.
Male chauvinist steamrolls and bullies and manipulated a woman he wants to have sex with. Accuses her of having sleeping with every man she talks to. She falls in love with him. The end.
