Suddenly, a strange tattoo appears on Abigail's shoulder, the morning after her 16th birthday. The tattoo is quickly explained when she is told that she is the heir apparent to an underground world that has been controlling the elements for centuries. As she learns more about her new world and her own hidden natural fire abilities, more secrets are discovered, including ones about her mother’s death. Abigail is left with the choice of backing the seemingly corrupt system she was born into or turning towards the radical rebels who want to overthrow the Guardian Elite.
4.5* The main character of Firebound, Abigail, is fantastic and by far the most realistic YA lead I've read for a long time. She has complex emotions, makes mistakes, and is stubborn as heck, but all in pursuit of her independence. Yes she is Special (as YA requires), but I enjoyed this more rounded take on the trope. The story involves her being caught between two equally dubious, powerful groups, each determined to use her power to their own ends, and it forces her to make difficult decisions.
My main reservation is the fantasy elements are wishy-washy at best. When I finished the book I still didn't understand what Guardians actually are or their place in this other world. The book is mostly driven by the exploration of Abigail's character, her grief, and her relationship with her family, which was more than enough to keep me invested to the end.
An amazing book! Not my normal genre so I was sceptical at first, but was hooked from the very first page. Really strong characters take you on an imaginative and unexpected journey through a mystical underground world, hiding many secrets. As the secrets start to reveal, Abigail is forced to make an impossible choice with drastic consequences. A fantastic read! I cannot wait to read more in the series to find out what trouble Abigail can get herself into next.
