Three years ago, Rosie Hardy found herself falling through a ripple in the quantum universe and into a land of talking rats, feral humans, pirates, and political games - Rodentia. Eventually she escaped but, although much safer, life has felt just a bit boring ever since.

Right now Rosie feels stuck in a loop. Her history revision is going on for ever, and doesn’t seem to be getting any more relevant. Quite the opposite in fact. As far as Rosie is concerned, history is pointless, and should be left in the past where it belongs.

Luckily she is able to give herself an excuse to duck out of revision for a while by taking the dogs for a walk in the orchard next door. However, it appears fate has something more interesting in store for Rosie than just a short dog walk. Thanks to the wayward actions of one of the dogs, suddenly Rosie finds herself catapulted back through the same quantum tunnel. Though things are not as they were in Rodentia. Gone are the days of peace, and the Rat world is now in the middle of a civil war.

Before she can even think of getting home, Rosie must navigate her way between two rival Rat Armies, who only seem to agree on one that they do not trust her, and both apparently want her dead. Her only escape is once again to take to sea with Captain Jack.

In the heat of battle Rosie makes new friends, meets with some old ones, and loses others, learning the true nature of some of the terrible costs of war.

Can she avoid the gallows? Can she somehow make the two opposing sides see sense and negotiate a lasting peace? And after all that, can she somehow still find her way back home again? One thing is for sure - it will not be an easy path, and Rosie will need all her wits about her if she is to succeed in changing the course of Rat history.
