Jesus is the Messiah and the book of Numbers is all about him. But it is very much about us too. As the Israelites were pilgrims on the way to God's promised land, so are we pilgrims on the way to God's promised inheritance for us. As such, the book of Numbers has much to teach us.
Paul Barnett, former Anglican Bishop of North Sydney, Australia, is a Visiting Fellow in Ancient History at Macquarie University and Teaching Fellow at Regent College, Vancouver and Moore College, Sydney. He is a frequent traveler to Israel, where Christianity began, and to Turkey and Greece, to which it rapidly spread.
A good overview with selected details mixed in throughout. It was enjoyable to see hints of Pakula's Jewish identity which he dropped in with ease. The problem with Jewish identity and moreso Jewish practice is highlighted too often, however, as Pakula takes pot-shots at anyone who keeps those activities in our days.
Even so, the Jesus focus which characterises Pakula's writings over the years is again apparent and very welcome.
