A Private Hunger

Rate this book
Matthew is taking a break before going to university, working at a cafe in Seattle. He's expecting to spend a few months meeting people, having fun and generally living it up before hitting the books. Then he meets Drakon, a passionate, masculine man with an animal magnetism that draws Matthew in. When Drakon offers Matt a job, he thinks the man is full of shit. But it soon turns out to be an offer he can't refuse. As Matthew moves in with Drakon on his country estate, he slowly finds himself cut off from the world. He begins to wonder if that animal magnetism is more literal than figurative and he thinks maybe Dragon would be a better name for his new lover. His only friend seems to be Drakon's butler, Wetthers, an old man with a gentle demeanor and a sympathetic ear. But even Wetthers can't save him from the near-obsessive need he has for Drakon, or from the danger that lurks right on the edge of his new life. Soon, Matt begins to wonder if he'll ever have the will to tell Drakon no. About anything. Will Matthew stay with the man he's growing to love once he discovers Drakon's long-lived, carefully guarded secret?

Sean Michael

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

What was the point??

Initially, Matt and Drakon are interesting characters and this really could have been a much better story, but it just seemed to go in circles. The dialogue is simplistic and repetitive. Matt's repeated correcting of Drakon calling him 'Pet' was cute the first five or so times. Not so cute at 300. Matt also seemed incapable of having a rational thought and following it through to completion. He throws a spectacular tantrum when D refuses to allow him to leave the house long enough to attend classes for a few hours a day, and you find yourself cheering and going 'finally!'. But all D has to do is have sex with him and we never hear about the classes again. Matt whines and cries and starts going stir crazy because he feels trapped and because 'he is a person and people do not OWN other people,' but D walks into the house looking sexy and he melts into his arms, saying "My D. Mine. My dragon." Really?? That's the extent of this story. This book is one sex scene after another with a few other things thrown in so it won't classify as outright porn. I will say that I did read it to the end, which means that the author did something right....or maybe I was just hoping that SOMETHING would happen..only it never did.

I honestly don’t know why I finished this book. Stubborn I guess. First of all there was way too much sexy times going on. I skimmed a lot. I probably could have forgiven that seeing how this is a Sean Michael book and that is par for the course. What I couldn’t forgive is that this story went absolutely nowhere. There was literally no point to the story. I started out liking Matthew but as the story went on I got more and more frustrated with him.

Ultimately the relationship with Drakon and Matthew was just too one sided. I ended the story with a very heavy feeling and wanting someone to come and rescue Matthew. Alas that didn’t happen and, in my opinion, ended up with a very unhappy ever after ending. I very rarely give a one-star rating but I couldn’t really give it anything higher. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this story.

Not the best Sean Michael novel I've read, and in the end kind of boring and seemingly pointless. Drakon [referred to constantly as "D" which annoyed me] is a dragon and eats people to survive - unashamed of this fact, and not easily prone to understanding that Matthew, a human who doesn't eat meat, has trouble coming to terms with.

I think one of the things that bothers me most about this novel is how Drakon NEVER CHANGES. He doesn't adjust, he doesn't adapt, he doesn't compromise. Matthew is the one having to give everything up, to accept being sequestered in a mansion [because D is insanely jealous and can't go out much], not having friends [because D is insanely jealous], giving up his family [have I said D is insanely jealous yet?]. He has to give up his dreams of schooling, of going out places, or interacting with others. Has to deal with the fact that he has no sense of privacy what-so-ever and is not allowed to have anything that is solely HIS.

And yet, for the most part, he's okay with this. He has his ups and downs and they have their fights, but he always gives in. ALWAYS.

It just drove me bonkers. That much imbalance in a relationship? Not worth it.

So a lot of the previous reviews are pretty accurate about this story. From reading the blurb, "A Private Hunger" seemed like it would be a good, hot story about a dragon shifter and his...mate?

So what this story actually was a story with regurgitated albeit raunchy sex scenes between two men (though I question if Matthew was due to his incessant giggling through out the entire story.)Drakon, the dragon shifter, had so much potential to be a stronger character if there was more development put into his character. Matthew as well - he was pretty vapid.

One part that I took offense to was Matthew telling Drakon, he was not a slut because he didn't have condoms on him. So does that mean only sluts use condoms? Wouldn't someone who actually has condoms with them not be a slut? The definition of a slut may differ from person to person but putting down safe sex is not the best message, in my opinion.

Sigh.

I don't recommend for anyone. It's not worth the time or money.

Does a story about a dragon shifter who basically keeps his lover couped up in a tower house and will never let him out - and I mean NEVER - count as romance? Does the fact that said dragon will inevitably end of up eating the man he loves, because that is how things always end between him and his mates, count as a HEA? My answer: Nope.

I want to begin by saying that if I had been able this selection would have gotten a star and a half. Secondly I also want to make it clear from the beginning of this review that I have read some wonderful stories by this author; in particular her Hammer series. Unfortunately this novel, A Private Hunger, was not on par with that series...not by a long shot. The story, such as it is, introduces us to Matthew, a sweet college student living away from his family for a year. Now, the author glances by this plot thread so we are not really clear why he chose to live away from home but we are made to understand that, in fact, he was drawn to this place due to his mate?...master?...keeper?...Drakon being in residence there. Drakon is a dragon shifter...who eats people...without any remorse...in fact, he revels in it--it is his right---they are his meal ticket and you get the sense we should all be happy that we can be that---his meal ticket. In fact eventually he will apparently eat Matthew--after he's screwed him six ways to sunday. And that is the story...eating, screwing. screwing, eating...an occasional whimsical chase scene between the ...lovers?? I spent most of this novel scratching my head and wishing I could turn off my kindle. There is essentially next to no plot line. But a great deal of very hot sex--Michaels has that down pat!

In all honesty, I could have lived with that except that the character of Matthew kept drawing me...he was so alone...so overwhelmed...so besotted and so very subjugated. It was painful to watch as his free will dwindled to nothing and then I found myself cringing as he professed his love over and over to this dragon master who never once professed his love in return.

I just didn't get it. I just didn't like it. Please--go read something of Sean Michaels'--something from the Hammer series--those are quite delightful. This one...A Private Hunger...leave this on on the shelf--shoved way to the back where it won't see the light of day.

I like books which do not pretend to be anything else but porn. The problem creeps out if there is hint of plot, which is stepped in to the dust by load of porn without any explanation to the reader. Sean Michael's books have one very good parts and very bad parts. The good ones are those racy sex scenes, where everything fucks anything and other turn around. The bad part is plot if author decides to put some in the book. The plots start with good and intriguing parts and are undeveloped and leave questions in readers minds.
Here for example is being called Drakon who is magical creature of sort which morphs in to the huge sort of dragon or whatever with scales (yes the carnivorous beast). Drakon accompanied with prototype of butler met young student and ...well they ended in bed ...ofcourse the butler was not there. Yes that is the plot. Mathew, the student, is whiny vegetarian who wants to study but well slips in to the "pet" role nicely and without any questions about Drakon. Eventually he learn the dark secret of lizardy Drakon but it was like hey I turn in to the lizard and eat humans. That is all folks, but the book is filled with sex scenes, but nothing overly perverted just one dildo and butplug that is all.

I don't usually rate book low, and I do love Sean Michael's books, so I feel like I need to give an explanation here. The reason I didn't like this book is because of D. On the other hand, the sex was hot, but then, when isn't it with Sean Michael?? :D

This was a so so story. I would say more like 2 1/2 stars. It started out interestingly enough. Matt seemed sweet, an Drakon was mysteriously sexy. However, once they were together, Drakon became overbearing, using sex to keep Matt happy enough to forget what he was upset about in the first place. The dialogue is often repetitive and the issue over calling Matt "Pet" got tiresome. There were times when it seemed as though Matt would finally stand his ground about being let out of the house and to attend college classes, but he always backed down, usually when Drakon turned on the sexual charm. Drakon was so afraid of his secret being spilled and thought that keeping Matt as his human pet would solve that problem. Matt didn't want to be his kept pet, and that is pretty much the story in a nutshell, with a lot of sex in between.

There are a few shifter books I have read where the character’s animal side is quite brutal and either equal to or stronger than the human part. This is one of those stories, only the dragon shifter’s secret is far worse than I expected. It put me in the same kind of dilemma as Matthew, the human waiter-hoping-to-be-a-student who falls for Drakon, the dragon shifter who is destined to be his mate. My problem is the conflict between understanding the concept of the food chain - meaning that some animals are meant to be eaten – and seeing the consequences applied to human beings. The whole thing seems entirely logical when I look at it from a distance, but at the same time I can’t help but be involved much more closely exactly because I am a human.

Matt is working as a waiter, intending to go to college once he has sown his wild oats. He likes to dance, is good at flirting, and is entirely unprepared for his life to change when he meets Drakon. After Drakon saves him from a beating, Matt is tempted to stay with him in the grand mansion he calls a home, and gradually gets lured in by Drakon’s spell. Don’t get me wrong: Matt is a willing participant in what they get up to – and they get up to a LOT of hot action. But Matt has no idea what the consequences will be if he stays – or that he never really had any choice but to stay.

As Drakon’s true nature slowly emerges, Matt has a tough time dealing with some of it. Yes, he feels loved and accepted, and is taken care of in every way. He loves Drakon deeply. But Matt also has to give up a lot – and that is much harder to accept. Making a choice is not really possible anyway, but it goes against the grain to have to accept things the way they are. The concept of free choice is something most humans believe in, and this story shows what it is like when that is taken away. Physically perfectly well off, Matthew’s emotional and mental state become his focus when trying to come to terms with his fate.

Even after considering what this story did to me, attempting to gain some distance and deciding whether I like it or not, I still don’t know what to think. I like the fact that Sean Michael wrote it this way: compelling, pulling me into accepting that Drakon is who he is, and not answering the question whether he is a good or a bad guy. I guess, like Matthew in the story, I have to just accept things the way they are. After all, “good” and “bad” are in the eye of the beholder. One thing is certain: this story is as scary as it is powerful!

If you like the tougher, more brutal side of shifters, if you’re ready to have your morality challenged, and if you’re looking for a read that will show you a very different world from what you assume is normal and right, yet make you think it might just be okay anyway then you will probably like this story. I still don’t know what to think – other than maybe “disturbing” - and that is an impressive result in its own right.

If you're looking for a story that is built mainly on sex, sex and more sex...well, you've definitely found it. Once Matt gets to Drakon's home, that is primarily what you'll get. Granted, it's hot as heck, but you're going to get more heat than story in this one. There are some interesting passages dealing with Drakon's true nature as a dragon, but a lot of things are left unresolved between Matt and Drakon, so while the hot and heavy parts are certainly enjoyable, you're still going to be left with a lot of open ends between the two men in the end.

This one's only for readers 18+, with copious amounts of explicit M/M sexual content. As in, oh about every other page. Since there's not much story to this one and things between Matt and Drakon are not really resolved fully, this one is only 2.5 stars for me.

This book was "Ok". I've wavered back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I'm going to say I like it, because, well, I like really hot sex in my books :o) and that's what I got...a LOT of really hot sex. But that's the problem, sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. There wasn't too much plot. This book had what I felt like was a lot of potential. The author could have developed the main characters "attributes" more and made that more of the storyline. I thought there could have been more to the butler, or at least it felt like there was something unfinished there. It just felt like hot sex scenes strung together with not much between them. I just wish there had been more. So the sex was great, but the rest was just...OK.

My problem with the book was not the smut... I'm all for smut. My problem was with the fact that there were several things that were touched upon and then just left. The struggle with Matthew going to college and then suddenly it's over. Drakon says "No!" and then just like that it's "No." and no more mention of it.

There should of been more tension regarding that. But hey, I guess sex sells. It wasn't satisfying.. I ended up being angry at the two main characters more then anything else.

Honestly if it's was possibles to rate that 0/5...this would be my choice.
It's not even PWP, that implies at least good porn.
Badly writing, badly editing (not a surprise considering the publishing house), personage cliche, unidimensional, no scenario, scene unrealistic/unthinkable.
I try to understand how someone can have the idea that it's was a good idea to publish that, even just write the book.
I want a refund.

There was no point to this story. The beginning was interesting enough, in the middle I was wondering what's going to happen next. Then the story just ended. I don't mean we got an ending, I mean the author just stopped writing and just decided to publish.
3 Stars for the sex.
Minus 2 stars for the lack of an actual story.

This started out promising but soon became disappointing as it dwindled to nothing but sex scene after sex scene. I usually like explicit sex in romances and a few gratuitous sex scenes don't bother me, but with "A Private Hunger" the plot was too thin of a veneer for the sex.

It sort of felt like it was a repeating cycle of ups and downs, denial and acceptance. The ending didn't feel completely resolved. However I still really enjoyed the story and characters.

What exactly was the point of this story? Anyone? Was it to see how many times D could tantrum about Matthew wanted to have something outside of him? Was it to see how a vegetarian could love a non vegetarian who's meat of choice is people? Was it to have numerous sex scene with no real plot in there anywhere? If it was then this story succeeded. I was super disappointed in this offering. I wouldn't have finished this if it wasn't for a challenge.

Wasn't really bothered by the whole eating people thing but Drakon's need to isolate Matthew bothered me, especially as he didn't even try to compromise, if only to show Matthew that it wasn't possible. I was also bothered by Drakon's inability to call Matt by his name and instead almost always refer to him as "pet" as if he were interchangeable with all those that had gone before. Which leads to a fundamental problem for me with this story, other than the fact that it was actually rather boring for a man-eating dragon story - how is that even possible? Back to my problem, I don't like stories where one character is immortal and the other isn't and there is no way to change things. It gives me the feeling this story did, that they are just there for convenience, until it is time to change them out, like an old pair of shoes.

I waffled between giving this book one or two stars. I decided on two because I didn't actually throw my computer at a wall after reading this, I just felt 'blah'. Maybe I was just in a good mood to begin with?
All the usual Sean Michael - isms "I need!", "So, big!". Lots of plunging and sucking up marks and pet names like - 'pet'. Unfortunately in 'A Private Hunger' the requisite twink is being held nominally captive by a man-eating dragon somewhere in contemporary America. This turns out to be more squick than hot.
I'm not even sure if this counts as a HFN...

I wish I would have not wasted my time on this book. I struggled to get through it. I will say there are times I just skipped the sex and moved on. That left about 40 pages to read.
I wanted to try a dragon shifter book, I loved the movie Dragon Heart and thought why not.
The beginning was ok and then it went to nothing but sex. Matt seemed nice and Drakon was the hot mysterious guy but it just feel flat. Not sure if it was because it was more sex then story but just not one I enjoyed.

This book started of as kind of the standard Sean Michael, as far as the porn outweighing the plot, but then the book just kind of died. One MC has huge problem with the fact that the other MC eats people (he's a dragon). Then after all this drama the book just ends with the first guys just kinda saying "Eh, whateva". It was a little strange.

Um...I couldn't really get into the story. Sex was hot though I skimmed through most of it. Drakon just didn't set well with me. He never changed...never adjusted his life to fit Matts. I think i dislike him. Matt was ok but he didn't grow on me either. Dragon treated Matt like property and Matt let him. The end.

Drakon recognizes Matthew as one born for him. Drakin takes him in when he is injured near his estate. Matthew falls for him giving up much of his plans. However, one thing that Matthew always had problems with is that Drakon is a man eating dragon. It's slow reading and I almost put it down several times.
