Sumika and Kanoko are dating, finally, which means that everything is okay. In an alternate world, anyway. Sumika is head over heels and so is Kanoko… for Hime. But Sumika knows, so that should be fine. Except the past and the present are not quite as separate they might seem to be.

Oh lord, does Yuri is My Job! ever know how to turn the crank up the drama dial and this volume is one of the most savage since Yano and Hime’s bedroom encounter a few volumes back. And next volume might be even worse.

Watching Sumika come around on romance is heartbreaking when you realize that she loves Kanoko SO much that she’s willing to accept being number two in her life so Kanoko can keep on pining for Hime, which is roughly as healthy as you think it is.

Normally Sumika has been the cool and collected one, oozing gyaru chic and knowing where to draw the line in the salon. It’s heartbreaking seeing her just lose it the second she finds somebody she truly cares for, and it’s the woeful mess that is Kanoko.

And Kanoko is utterly miserable because she expects Sumika to genuinely be all over her and a lot more physical, except she isn’t. Sumika is respectful to a fault and doesn’t want to push Kanoko more than she’s comfortable with - Sumika is giving everything of herself.

Kanoko can’t figure out why she’s so unhappy, but it’s not hard to imagine that Kanoko has no idea what actual love is either and seeing it in a wholly different light from Sumika’s version is not what she expected. Getting her over Hime is kind of what I was hoping for, but it sure isn’t the case yet.

Which leads Kanoko to ask Nene for help, the latter thinking that she’s helping Kanoko with Hime, which leads to a big old record scratch when Nene realizes that the girl she always wanted and knew was straight turned out to not be so straight after all.

I’ve really loved how Nene came from the background of the series to being one of the mains and boy does she go through the wringer this volume. Nene had something very special with Sumika, but she threw it away when it wasn’t the right kind of special and she didn’t bother telling Sumika her feelings.

This also wasn’t helped by Yoko, who is the textbook definition of a predatory lesbian and recognized for the awful she is. She is, even worse, one of those people who likes drama for the sake of drama, although her fixation on Sumika suggests something even more unhealthy.

And that’s naturally who set Kanoko on this path last volume, but even Yoko couldn’t have predicted just how special Kanoko is to Sumika, arguably because she understands lust but nothing more permanent than that. But that won’t stop her from trying to destroy things for her own amusement.

I’ve absolutely loved this storyline because it’s doing one of my favourite things - using the characters as the basis for the drama rather than coming up with ridiculous nonsense. There are a lot of broken people at the cafe and their paths to happiness are fraught.

The cliffhanger to this is a real eyebrow-raiser that sees the past coming back around once again and is clearly designed to push Sumika into action and make her miserable.

However, I see a much more satisfying alternative path here that I really hope turns into Nene’s redemption arc. Not that Nene needs one, she didn’t do anything wrong except not being honest and listening to the devil, but she’s tortured herself over it the whole time. Her talk with Sumika might be the highlight of the volume.

Sure, it’s a little on the nose to have four leads working in the cafe and them seemingly pairing off, but I’ve been way more invested in the Sumika and Kanoko story anyway, even if Kanoko is in need of a dump truck’s worth of therapy.

Also, I give bonus points to any yuri series that acknowledges homosexuality and uses the term lesbian. It’s always nice to see.

5 stars - this story arc is absolutely made for me, featuring a pairing I’ve been hoping for and a character who has slowly emerged as one of the series’ most interesting. This series may not have started big, but it has only gotten better and better as it continued.

yoko the confidant…

Not! I knew she was behind Kanoko’s sudden departure from being an introvert and only caring about what happens with Hime and her feelings. But because Yano has confessed and Hime finally wound up staying by Yano’s side even when she felt weird has thrown Kanoko for a loop. And the most logical conclusion that she can come up with now is that it is possible that Yano can confess to Hime her true feelings and Hime may actually return them.

Kanoko used to be able to talk to Tachibana about all things Hime, but when Tachibana figured she liked Kanoko, then she fumed and told Kanoko no more conversations about Hime with her ever again. Kanoko was used a bait once Yoko saw the pictures of Tachibana with her new little sister that she gave her contact info to Kanoko knowing she would keep it instead of her being told to give it to Tachibana. Kanoko fell for it and has been in the clutches of Yoko for some time now. This woman is a master manipulator and predator.

I am glad to finally know the whole story behind Nene, Yoko and Tachibana. Now Nene knows just how used she was and was also a pawn that cost her friendship with Tachibana but also a possible love match. Tachibana was right when she said that Yoko destroys everything. I am also glad that Yoko told Tachibana that she was in love with her. It may seem like Tachibana wasn’t affected. She was. Her feelings are always latent and catches up with her later. I think she has been in love with Nene from the beginning but because of thinking she was straight, she didn’t give it the full weight and attention it deserved. Now that Kanoko has opened up her eyes even more with girl on girl feelings toward Hime and also the confession of Yano for Hime has her really thinking of her own true orientation.

I feel badly for Kanoko that her drive and need to talk about Hime led her into the hands of a predator and master manipulator that has a way of seducing young girls that are in love with someone else into her bed and then just as quickly dumping them. She takes their innocence. And it appears she isn’t new at this. I’m sure these are not her only victims.

Even though I feel sorry for Kanoko, she shouldn’t get Hime or Tachibana in the end. Hime should be with Yano and Tachibana rightly belongs to Nene.

Messy queer relationships, by girls trying to figure out how to get what they want (or even what they want in the first place), and not knowing how to ask for it. Love that they're trying, even if there's obviously foreseeable catastrophe ahead. Here's hoping for love and happiness (and calm) in the future for them.

I once again binge read volumes 10-13 and I was going to just give a general review of them but I feel like volume 12 needs it's own dedicated review. So I'll just say that I still really like this manga. It's like Oran High School Host club but make it sapphic and those are 2 things I love.

I love Sumika and I love that she's getting to date who she wants to, but something feels fishy to me.

Absolute disaster lesbians, all of them

Where's that checklist: we got our awkward autistic one, the aro airhead, the codependent obsessive... ah yes, lets add the predatory one!

Sono felice che Nene e Sumika si siano finalmente confrontate sul passato🥹. MA QUESTO FINALE?! PORCA PUTTANA. YOKO, FAI PROPRIO SCHIFO.
