Dr. Göttner-Abendroth has lifted matriarchy out of its mythological cloud by showing that matriarchal-based religions not only existed up to about 3500 years ago throughout the Indo-European world, but that their remnants remained for many centuries among the farmers and country people everywhere until the late Middle Ages, when they were systematically extinguished by the inquisitions and witch burnings. Dr. Göttner-Abendroth points out that Western historians, in upholding patriarchy, have ignored and dismissed these remnants, along with the important matriarchal values that accompany them, such as respect for the earth and nature, and for feeling and emotion, since patriarchy gives value only to intellect, to gain and loss, and to might as right. As a consequence of this thinking running to its logical extreme, she says, the welfare of the earth upon which we live is threatened. While Dr. Göttner-Abendroth in no way proposes returning to a matriarchal culture, she emphasizes that we desperately need to re-integrate these lost matriarchal values to bring balance and health back to our civilization.

This is a must read for anyone who honors the Goddess in any way. It gives historical facts the prove that there was indeed a patriarchal take over in history

Un libro difficile, non tanto per il suo linguaggio o per il tema trattato, quanto per la solidità e validità della sua teoria, ovvero il fatto che la mitologia è da secoli analizzata secondo una prospettiva "patriarcale" che non considera un (possibile) sostrato di cultura ancestrale "matriarcale" e per tanto questo tipo di approccio non può che essere errato, forzato e incompleto.
Le teorie dalla Goettner-Abendroth prendono vita nella Germania degli anni '70 del secolo scorso e sono (ovviamente) impregnati della neo cultura femminista che si stava affermando proprio in quegli anni. Sacrosanto porre le basi di un "pensiero al femmile" e la Abendroth lo fa tra l'altro con il rigore della scienziata. Tuttavia (anche) le sue teorie sono in diversi punti forzate, "tirate per i capelli", nonchè prive di reali fondamenta (come si è arrivati per esempio a sostenere che sacerdotesse o le divinità erano tutte bionde?), primo tra tutti il dibattito sulla violenza delle tribù "patriarcali" (gli indoeuropei) di cui si afferma si siano insediate a forza e abbiano sottomesso diverse culture "matriarcali", costringendole a mutare il proprio pensiero. Il punto debole di questa teoria è il fatto che le tribù patriarcali cercavano una chiara forma di potere, mentre le tribù matriarcali erano orizzontali, da questo punto di vista, o si potrebbe dire: collettive, collegiali. Contro cosa esattamente allora si sono battuti questi indoeuropei?
L'affermazione però che mi ha fatto scemare di molto sia la simpatia che il rispetto per la Abendroth, è stato il riferimento agli ebrei e al fatto che dal momento in cui sono passati da una religione matriarcale a una patriarcale, sono cominciati tutti i loro problemi a livello nazionale, ecco: questa la trovo davvero grave (non si capisce poi di che "nazione" parli, visto che stava parlando di miti praticamente contemporanei ai sumeri, quando sicuramente non esisteva alcuna "nazione israeliana"

This is a very interesting book. As a beginner in the field of mythology I learnt a lot and got a good foundation for the continuation of my explorations of these forgotten and / or forbidden worlds. Heide Göttner-Abendroth is my best teacher ever.
