If the defining goal of modern-day business can be isolated to just one item, it would be the search for competitive advantage. And, as everyone in business knows, it's a lot harder than it used to be. On the one hand, competition is more intense than ever--technological innovation, consumer expectations, government deregulation, all combine to create more opportunities for new competitors to change the basic rules of the game. I went back and forth being very interested and uninterested in this book.

There were some recent organization changes in my workplace that made me read this book.

Here are the key points that I am taking away.

1) org changes are not just about the boxes and lines on paper (this is just the “hardware” aspects of the organization)
2) equally, if not more, important is the “software” or human aspects of the organization. This could be formal relationships but also, often, informal.
3) how people will act and respond to the changes need to be carefully thought through.
4) it is important to explain the changes. Especially to those who will perceive it as a loss of something to them
5) changes should be aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization
6) org structures should naturally change over time. Done do it for the sake of creating a shake up, but don’t also get caught in the success syndrome
7) organizational “LEGO” pieces, modularly functioning groups can make changes efficient and flexible
