The Ghent Altarpiece is the world's most vandalized work of art. It has been vandalized, demolished, or stolen thirteen times.
Why? What mysteries does it conceal?
Enter Nicholas Lee, a UNESCO investigator who works for the United Nations' Cultural Liaison and Investigative Office (CLIO). Nick's duty is to safeguard the world's cultural artifacts, which range from obscure things to national treasures.
When Nick travels to Belgium to see a woman from his past, he unintentionally stumbles on the trail of the twelfth panel for the Ghent Altarpiece, which was taken under cover of night in 1934 and has never been seen since. Nick is soon drawn into a violent struggle that has been brewing for for two thousand years. The Maidens are on one side.
The novel moves quickly and has plenty of action to keep you interested. The plot is well-developed, and the mystery surrounding the Virgin Mary has you turning the pages to see what the secrets are. Overall, while this is not Mr. Berry's favorite novel, it is a great thriller with a historical flavor. If you enjoy history, especially riddles surrounding historical characters or events, this is the novel for you.
