Will God hear their cries and grant them a future together, or will deadly occurrences tear them apart forever?
England, 1849. Beatrice Beckwith is an orphaned young lady living with her aunt. On the brink of her deepest wish coming true, her plans unexpectedly collapse. Kept apart against their wills, Beatrice and Isaac must navigate deadly illness, family deception, and scheming neighbours, yearning for the time they’ll be reunited. But as they each face their darkest moments, they’ll endure more devastation than ever before. Can joy once again be found, or will dangerous circumstances extinguish its light—and their very lives? Finding the love of your life should be the best day of your life but all of the heartache that Beatrice has gone through makes it tough to carry on when things don’t go as planned. The setting is 1849 England, which I find fascinating, as social practices are a far cry from what they are today. My favorite character was Isaac because it was clear that he had a plan and would execute it to the best of his ability. I admire Beatrice because she had been through so much, but she was either a bit shallow or still reeling from all that life had put in her path. There was a strong faith thread, which I did appreciate. The small close-knit community of Lindenfell was charming and friendly, so I could understand why Isaac had such a strong desire to settle down there. This is also the second book in the Victorian Virtues Series, but I didn’t feel like I missed anything important because I missed book one in the series. This is my first book of hers I've read; she has a pretty generous backlist that will be worth checking out. I received a copy of this book from a blog give-away, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. The Lamp was a heartfelt story set in England 1849 during a Cholera epidemic. When Isaac was about to ask Beatrice to be his wife, the unexpected turned his life around. He was dispatched by his father to a remote estate in Sussex. His father has inherited Moriah Manor and tasks Isaac to get it ready for his parents arrival. Lots of melodrama ensues as Isaac encounters a taciturn caretaker and strange neighbors. He longs to return to Beatrice but communication is not the best partly because of the epidemic. Sadly, Beatrice becomes very ill and with her aunt having succumbed to the disease, she is all alone, save for the charity of an elderly friend. Isaac finds out more about his ancestry and escapes a conniving female. He stands up for what is right and good. I appreciate the author’s solid and clear gospel message and showing redemption and forgiveness. *I won this ebook from the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. I have not read a book in this setting or time period in a long time, I forgot how much I love them! I almost read this in a day but it was 2:30am so I had to give in. I kept waiting for a good stopping point but the twists upon twists kept getting me and I just HAD to know how it was going to turn out!
This is a split perspective story and different for me as I almost enjoyed Issacs perspective more than the female lead Beatrice's point of view. Her views of God were not quite right for most of the book and it really got to me. Beatrice's views are corrected near the end but it really hampered my ability to enjoy her story along the way. At the end of the book I liked Beatrice's character and story much better having seen the full picture, even empathizing with her at one point.
I really liked the lead in to the authors next book in the series. I want to read it to see what happens to the next couple and what could possibly keep two such lovely people apart!
I received a early copy of the book, my opinions as always are my own.
I'm a Christian, but I like to read romances. And I like romances with a Christian theme. But this author didn't write a Christian romance. She wrote a sermon. Over half of this book is prayers , especially with Beatrice. She couldn't say anything without praying. The best part of story was when the author wrote of Isaac. It was obvious he was a Christian, but he also spoke with people & did things in the story. Every word wasn't a prayer. One or two short prayers would have been fine. But this author wanted to preach. I didn't feel any emotion because she didn't have Isaac & Beatrice around each other long enough for me to feel anything for them when they separated & when a couple of circumstances kept them apart. The ending was good, but could have been better.
I truly loved this story of Isaac and Beatrice. Life was not always easy. They experienced sadness, disappointment, family strife, and death of loved ones. But through it all their love for Jesus shined through even when the Why, God questions came. They saw His faithfulness to them. Through it all Jesus was their lamp. He was their light in the darkness as He is for all of us who put our faith and trust in Him. He lit their path and guided their steps. And....you will love meeting Bill, Isaac's Uncle, he never knew. You have to read the book to find out about Bill. I would love a sequel in the story of Isaac andBeatrice
A beautiful story! I immediately fell in love with the characters. The love of the Savior in our darkest hour woven through the story kept me clinging to hope that all would work out for Beatrice and Isaac. The secrets of the Taylor family added mystery to the story keeping the reader drawn in. This is a great story of God's love and how much he loves us. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
What a memorable story! This is a story full of endearing relationships, a devastating outbreak, betrayal, and unexpected twists. Kiernan is a faith-based, historical author whose story of Beatrice and Isaac, kept apart by happenstance and people in their lives, will leave you wanting more! These main characters weave their way into your heart as Kiernan weaves her story throughout Victorian England. I received an ARC; review given voluntarily.
Another amazing book by Edwina Kiernan. The Lamp takes you on a journey of Beatrice and her family, friends and Gods faithfulness thru everything. The author has a wonderful way of writing so you feel as you are there with the person. This book was given to me by the publisher all thoughts are my own. This truly is a beautiful book. Cannot wait for the next book.
Beatrice has lost so much and endured so much that her faith almost waivers. Isaac has honored and obeyed his earthly father, but at what cost? Cholera rages in the area, evil people try sabotaging Isaac's plans, yet Gid brings good through all of it. Excellent story and encouragement in the face of hardship.
I just loved this book!!!!! The characters were so good….alittle mystery, twists and turns. Kept me on the edge of my seat! I love the fact that she mentions the Lord. Wonderful verse and wonder endearing book. I will truly read more of her books.
I loved this book. It is a wonderful story of how two people rely on God to help them overcome many difficult situations and see how God works things out for them. The characters are well developed and likeable. The story flows at the perfect pace. I highly recommend this book.
This was a sweet clean Christian romance that had me on the edge of my seat more than once! I love how the 2 main characters relied on the Bible and the word of God to get through their tribulations. I’ll definitely read more from this author!
Because life is so full of challenges it’s easy to let go of hope. Beatrice and Isaac really have to hang on when darkness reigns but that’s the only way to reach their dreams. Read the book. It’s worth the time.
Life is full of many challenges but as Beatrice and Isaac learn it’s important to hold on to hope. Hope helps by shining a light in the darkest trials and it’s the only way to reach our dreams,
Beatrice and Isaac are in love. Just as he is getting ready to propose, his father makes demands that pulls Isaac away immediately. They are both confused and upset about the sudden departure. No sooner does Isaac leave, than a cholera outbreak hits the town. Beatrice's life is thrown for a loop. Their faith is tested as people conspire to prevent him from returning and communication is tampered with. Will their love prevail? When the truth comes out is it in time? Throughout the book, multiple mentions of their faith in God and His promises are what comforts them during the darkest of time. The true Lamp we all need. I received an ARC copy from the author. Review voluntarily given.
