Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
Here are the reviews for each subvolume within the Omnibus:
Volume 10: This was alright, but the fight between Sho and Shinra was not that interesting which is disappointing since Shinra is powering up his powers in just a few seconds while fighting his brother. We do learn a few new things about Sho and the bad guys. But the fight/talking goes on and on and on for chapters. A few of the baddies spill secrets that bad guys would never speak about in the real world but I appreciate them trying to keep the reader up to speed.
Oh well, next volume.
Volume 11: OK, that was strange even for this Manga. Shinra fights with the Captain of Company 1 - which was supposed to be the Captain telling Shinra about the fire that "killed his mom and brother". Then there is a chapter devoted to beefcake as the males of Company 8 work out for a Nude Firefighters Calendar. This Manga does have a lot of fanservice. The Shinra and the female members of the team head out shopping on their day off and Shinra is blamed for a prank.
Later Shinra gets a meeting with the Captain of Company 4. That Captain we are told has information on the Adola link. Instead the Captain is weirdly addicted to being burned. Then a bunch of Fire Soldiers become possessed and a fight breaks out - Arthur and Shinra to the Death!
Even though we are learning things and the plot is progressing vol 10 & 11 sure feel fillerish.
Volume 12: Well so much for duel to the death. We get a flashback to Arthur’s abandonment and promotion to annoying delusional sidekick. But the fight just goes on and on and one with so much talking. Then much later we get to meet another sociopath adrenaline junkie. She shows up with the whole so many infernos and evil White Robes happening all at once. If I’m reading this world right, if the captain of station 8 had not asked for help the other Fire Soldier units would just ignore a town being destroyed with its population because the assigned unit would be fine? They just send a unit and let things happen if I’m reading the reaction to reinforcements show up correctly.
Overall this omnibus feels like filler. I know we learn a lot and the plot progresses but what could have been done in pages is spread over several chapters. It gets tiring. At least it is well written with some cool art. But I watched the anime first and the anime seems to have smoothed out / over this part of the story so if felt less like filler.
The Shinra v. Sho’s fight was PHENOMENAL and I was stunned by how much I loved it. The rest was great and the setup for the next arc is pretty good. We are getting answers and the plot is MOVING!
4.5* stars. Review summary: The feels and action are strong with this volume. I love the quirkiness of the characters and seeing Shinra's growth as a fire soldier, but also as a young man. To volume 11, let's go!
Full review: Things are really heating up in Fire Force, I love how almost everything in this volume was Shinra and his little brother Shō, basically being brothers, despite Shō's lack of memory and brattiness - Shinra's phrasing. It's also really cool that, apparently, subways are a thing of the past in the Fire Force world, the underground tunnels now considered a taboo and scary place. Being underground, it's where "the light of Amaterasu cannot reach," essentially being the boogie man for ill-behaved kids. It's still unnerving even for adults too, and the entrances are off limits without written consent with the government.
I love how throughout the whole series even in the serious parts there's a bit (or a lot) of jokes and lighthearted scenes. Though lately, some of the more serious notes have been a little jarring. Like how the team 8's new scientist, Licht, explained to Shinra how heat could make time slow or even stop in the middle of a major fight - that Shinra was in - or the rather corny medical dramatics. Don't get me wrong, I'm rather intrigued how an entire fire company based out of a hospital as a medical unit along with firefighting works in this world, but the team's introduction still felt corner than the normal silliness of the series.
That said, I am glad I have the omnibuses and can keep reading, because I need to learn more about the Evangelist and what their plan is for Shinra and the other Adolla Burst or fourth gen people. And of course see how Shinra is able to get his brother back, because let's be real, he has to convince Shō to come to his side, right!?... Right?
Fav side character- Don't have one Fav use of power- Shinrin Least fav character- Viktor Licht Fav character- Shinra Fav relationship- Shinra & Arthur Fav volume- 12
Volume 10 (3 stars) I don't like what Viktor Licht's character adds to the story. Everything he says is annoying. In the middle of a fight he just started sprouting science talk and both the good and bad guys just stop talking to let him explain how they are each using their powers. It's just weird and annoying. Liked the fight between Shinra and Sho. It wasn't a quick easy battle. It lasted quite long and it was good.
Volume 11 (3 stars) After previously denying to talk to Shinra about what happened 12 years ago, why the hell did he voluntarily seek out Shinra just to talk to him about it. It was odd.
Volume 12 (4 stars) Excited to see how all the fights will end in the next volume.
Surprisingly this one felt a little slower than the previous volumes-- there was a decent amount of information shared through this Omnibus so that could be part of why it felt a bit more slow. I look forward to starting Omnibus 5 to pick up where we left off-- this one ended mid fight scene 😩
