Some people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.
Many submissions and rejections followed.
In 1998, she sold to a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.
In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. She went on to write 21 novels and novellas in that series, then wrote three other series for Kensington before moving to St. Martin's Press.
She has two series with SMP--The Intimate Relations series complete with three novels and one novella of romantic suspense set in California's wine country, and an erotic paranormal series, Feral Passions, set in California's Trinity Alps.
She is also continuing her Spirit Wild series, the sequel to Wolf Tales, independently.
Kate and her husband of over forty-five years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.
First Things first! Happy Birthday Kate! Who knew I was saving the CrystalFire review for your birthday?
Anyways, here we go...

So first we have Taron who is a scholar... over 1,000 years old and a virgin (by choice he is celibate). Taron has been fighting the demon war by staying in Lemuria and debating the council and such but now that is no longer needed he has agree to help train the Paladins (the freed slaves). Taron is like all Lemurian men tall, lean, long hair, muscular and gorgeous. He has Blood red hair past his butt and bright green eyes, he has a soft heart and is more of a thinker. I could not find a picture that did him justice but here is the closest I could find... Okay so now we have Willow. I just LOVE willow's character! Willow started as swamp gas (Only Kate I swear!) then became Dax's help to fight the demon king and was a 2 inch sprite or wisp o'the will hence the name Willow. Then poor willow gets eaten by the demon king, but slipped her consciousnesses into the dog "Bumper" before she was totally lost. So she had been for all intents and purposes living in the dog. Now with a little magic ... Willow is a W O M A N and sexy one. She is not afraid to go after what she wants and that is Taron.
Willow pushes Taron to accept his inner beast whilst trying to save the world...
Paranormal romance fans if you have not picked up this series you are missing out! This series has it all romance, adventure, colorful characters, witty banter, strong women and sexy warriors. I read an interview somewhere where Kate said she got the idea for this series from a Crystal/Gem shop on Mount Shasta and there you have Kate in a nutshell. Kate Walks into a store looking at crystals and gems and walks out thinking about how crystal can kill demons and eventually we get Lemurians living in Mount Shasta fighting said demons. Remarkable!
I really loved this series and I am sad to see it wrap up but it was a fun and sexy expedition! Pick-up the first three if you have not read them yet in a eBook bundle for $9.99 on Amazon and Barnes and noble and then Pre-Order This One!!!
Of Coarse it's 5 Stars! It's Kate!!!
And I will leave you with the rest of the Taron and Willow Pictures I found on the net!
Two of the most unlikely heroes, but well-loved characters hold the future of the world in their hands. If they fail the world as they know it will end. If they succeeded they will live to fight yet another day.
Taron is a scholar who has never thought he was missing anything in life. That was until he learned that he was really not living and his life was turned upside down. Taron has been sent out on a mission to help with a battle against evil. The last thing he expects to find is that this is the final battle of good vs. evil and he is the one that determines that fate of the world. But even more surprising is who will be the one fighting next to him.
When Willow wakes up to find she is no longer trapped in the mind of Bumper. But in the arms of the man she has longed for since she first laid eyes on him, she is overwhelmed by all the feeling and changes in her short life. But when Taron tells her of his mission, Willow knows she must help Taron whether he likes it or not.
What happens along the way will change Taron & Willows life forever.
What a great way to end this series. Although I am hoping that Kate will maybe write some more about our favorite Demonslayers. If you have read the first three Demonslayer books you will love Crystalfire. If you haven’t started this series I would highly suggest you get started and read the first three books before Crystalfire is released in April.
To Kate: HUGE THANK YOU for sending me Crystalfire to read and review. XOXO
Opening Sentence: The steady slap, slap, slap of Taron’s sandals echoed off the rough stone walls.
The Review:
So, this story starts where the last left off. The good news; the battle in Lemuria has just ended, the rightful king returned to power, the demons driven back to their spawning place, everybody alive and well. The bad news; there is still a whole mess of demons in Sedona, patiently waiting for their king to appear, and use them for sustenance, to make him powerful enough to finally claim the man who has a hold on the life force attached to his current body, so that he may claim his rightful spot as ruler of demons. Who would want that job?
Of go our merry band of demon killers to take care of this latest swarm. Unbeknownst to them, the demon king has different plans. Knowing that the rest of them will be busy, he heads to the town of Evergreen, to possess the body of the group’s best canine friend, Bumper, who is also carrying the spirit of Willow, a magical sprite who lost her body when the demon ate it. What the demon doesn’t count on is Taron’s appearance, carrying his own crystal sword. Having been told by his sword to go to Evergreen, Taron is awaiting the demon when he shows at Ed’s house. A few things happen in the fight; see my notable scene, and in the end the demon ends up possessing Ed rather than the dog.
So, as the demon is busy living inside Ed’s body, he is also busy making those plans to take over the world. In a supreme moment of good luck, for the demon anyway, he becomes capable of pushing Eddy, another one of the hunters, into a place (I guess you could call it that) known as the void. The void is where they send good demons and bad angels to hang out, no corporeal being, just consciousness swimming around in a vast nothingness.
As Taron is busy trying to figure how to get the demon out of Ed and out of their lives, the rest of the gang are busy trying to save Eddy. There is so much stuff that happens here in the middle-living tattoos, entities in crystal, lovemaking, chanting, fighting (and a partridge in pear tree) that you just have to read the book, and at some point the whole series, to completely understand.
Oh, and I almost forgot, the romance portion of tonight’s event. Taron is a Lemurian, best friend to the king’s grandson, scholar, and most often the voice of reason. However, as of late, he has been helping train this new generation of female warriors in the skills of combat. When his sword finally talks to him, telling him to travel to Earth to take part in the final battle, he rushes there as fast as possible, only to find himself alone with Bumper/Willow and Ed, because the rest are apparently at the real happening place where all the demons are at. But, he turns out to be in the right place when they are attacked by the demon king.
During that battle, Willow magically switches places with Bumper, and they become a humanoid female, and the dog is the consciousness inside her brain. When Willow wakes up to this new body, and Taron beside her, she is rather happy. She can now act on those feelings she harbored for Taron back as a sprite, having loved him since they met.
Taron is afraid to give into these feelings, having been given some sort of doomsday fortune by a woman at a fair in his youth. Something like, you will only love once, and know a mess of joy but also a whole load of pain. He interprets this to mean that when he falls in love, he will be hurt, so he becomes celibate so he will never take that risk. But he falls in love with Willow anyway, and then becomes afraid for her because a pain that bad could only mean that he would be losing her.
So I’d have to say these are the most far-fetched love match of the series. To fall in love with a sprite, a female who can literally dance in your hand, seems a bit extreme in the whole inter-species dating realm. Falling in love with her after a magical accident turns her into a full sized humanoid, now that I can understand. And the Lemurian king? Falling in love with a voice in your head, an entity that has no corporeal form? That’s almost worse than falling for the imaginary someone you might’ve met online (that is you in that picture, right?). But, since she also turns humanoid by the end of the book, we will let these two happy lovebirds have their joy as well.
So, all’s well that ends well in this last book of the series. And I must say; they are all good, start to finish. The pace set in the beginning stays all the way through, the plot twists and turns just enough, the heart turns and twists just right. Overall, a fantastic series, and I am glad I can add them all to my bookshelves.
Notable Scene:
It’s after Bumper! Willow screamed, but she screamed in anger, not fear. She might be nothing more than consciousness at this point, but she still had her powers. Concentrating on the energy swirling about the room, she pulled in all she could and, using Bumper’s voice as a conduit, threw a tremendous blast at the demon.
Willow watched through Bumper’s eyes as everything appeared to slow to stop-action speed. Bumper howled. Willow’s burst of power shot from between the dog’s powerful jaws—a thick stream of brilliant blue sparkles, propelled in a shimmering torrent of pure energy.
Taron’s blade flashed in the overhead light. He raised his arms and then brought his sword down in a smooth yet deadly arc, slicing neatly through the demonic mist.
His stroke was perfectly timed to Willow’s blast.
Combined that way, their power should have worked. Should have killed the demon king except…instead of hitting the demon, all that energy collided with the broad side of Taron’s crystal blade. Willow couldn’t believe what she was seeing, the sparkling blast of power slamming into crystal, exploding in such bizarre slow motion that it was like watching a movie, one frame at a time.
It seemed to take minutes, not the fraction of a second that was actually needed for all of that power—the energy of crystal combined with all that Willow had gathered—to glance off the faceted blade and explode in a multicolored shower of stars.
Stars that ricocheted in all directions, with the bulk of them turning back in a mass of energy both light and dark. Turning back and bathing Bumper in a fiery storm of cold, sparkling light.
Light that turned Willow’s world entirely dark.
The DemonSlayers Series:
1. DemonFire
2. HellFire
3. StarFire
4. CrystalFire
FTC Advisory: Kensington/Zebra provided me with a copy of CrystalFire. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
I loved this series. Great story, great character development. I really liked the way the end of the story played out and how the fight between good and evil was fought and defined.
Crystalfire by Kate Douglas * I received this ARC/book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Taron of Lemuria is frustrated with his crystal sword because it still hasn’t spoken to him. He feels like he must not be a true warrior but there is more to it than that. He doesn’t have any confidence in himself or his abilities; he is a scholar not a warrior. When his sword decides to speak, it’s to warn him that he is needed in Evergreen for the final battle. He never expected that he and Willow would be facing the Demon King on their own.
As the other members of their group are dealing with their own battles, Eddy ends up in the Abyss and her father is taken over by the Demon King. More and more demons are escaping through the portal and taken over everything from non-sentient beings to small animals. Nothing is going the way it should but this small band of warriors is determined not to let the Demon King take over Earth.
With the final battle upon him and a strange blast of magic, Taron finds himself face to face with a beautiful woman that looks vaguely familiar. He has been fascinated with Willow since he first held her in his hand, now he has the chance to hold her in his arms and love her like he has always desired. He is afraid to love her though, he fears that something will happen to her if he lets her into his heart. She is so different from the women of Lumeria, she wants to experience everything and not miss out on anything.
Willow has been inside Bumper ever since the demon ate her small sprite body. She has gotten used to seeing the world through the dogs eyes and relying on Bumper to help her spot the demons. She never dreamed that through a twist of fate she would get to experience the world as a full grown woman. She is so excited that she has the opportunity to act on her desire toward Taron, if she can only get him to take a chance on love.
This was the final installation of the demon hunter series and it did not disappoint. The story picks up right where the last one left off and the Demon King has continued to gain power. The gang is stranded in Sedona when he seals all the portals except the one to the Abyss, which leaves Taron on his own. The story is action packed with some unexpected twists and turns, leaving the reader wondering what was going to happen next.
All of the beloved characters made an appearance but as with each book, this one was focused on the main couple – Tarin and Willow. I couldn’t believe what the Demon King had in store for Ed and was happy with how everything turned out. The scene in the caves below Lemuria was very powerful and a unique bonding moment for the warriors involved.
The attraction between Taron and Willow has been growing since she was a sprite but now that she is a full grown, beautiful woman it is even stronger. They complement each other in all aspects and she helps Taron come to grips with some of the issues he has been dealing with. They are on their own and have to rely on Bumper’s help to defeat the Demon King. They never expected to face the final battle alone.
I think this was my favorite story in the series. It was action packed, with a romantic element and contained all of the characters I have grown to love. I give Crystalfire 4 Flaming Hearts.

I will admit, I haven’t read the other books in this series. Would it have helped to understand the history of what was happening and who all the players were? Definitely. The world of the DemonSlayers is very complex with many players, so I did spend a fair amount of time just trying to figure out what was happening. That said, I was able to get a feel for what this storyline was about and move forward.
Taron was an interesting man. Scared by a fortune giving to him when he was a teen, he’s shied away from any type of romantic entanglement. His thirst for knowledge is his only one and he knew it was one that would never hurt him as the fortune teller told him. But that was before he found Willow in a human body. Once he’s with Willow, we spend a lot of time inside Taron’s head. A lot. While I could understand Taron’s inner monologue, having never experiences what he was going through with anyone before, it got to be a bit much. Taron hadn’t spent much time fighting demons, but he seemed to get through those encounters just fine. He’s interaction with Willow seemed to set him over the edge and into arguments with himself in his head.
Willow, on the other hand, had not problems embracing not only the fact that she now had a human body, but that she was in love with Taron and that she was an integral part of the solution to rid the world of the Demon King. Now she may have taken all of this a bit to eagerly, it was refreshing to break away from Taron’s over analyzing.
Together, Taron and Willow had great chemistry. They were able to work together when fighting demons and set the bedroom on fire when they were done. For two people who were rather inexperienced, they got past all of that fairly quickly.
The secondary story lines involving the other DemonSlayers really brought the story together for me. While I may not know how they got to the place they are together, you can tell the Slayers all work as a unit and love each other as family. They have an all for one, one for all attitude that had you immediately hoping they would succeed on their mission. While the story lines do end up coming together at the end, it was those secondary characters that kept me moving through the story.
Crystalfire by Kate Douglas Paranormal Romance -April 3rd, 2012 4 stars
CrystalFire is the forth full length novel in the author’s Demon Slayers Futuristic series about men from an alternate world who hunt demons. These demons have invaded earth and they use their special swords to kill and protect. While it is not necessary to have read the prior book, many previous characters reappear particularly Eddy, the heroine from the first book DemonFire.
In CrystalFire, the handsome scholar and reluctant warrior Taron is on a hunt to find a powerful demon who is intent on taking his friend, Dax’s power and using it for evil purposes. He is accompanied by a lovely sprite named Willow who has been transformed into a human sized woman - a beautiful and sensual woman that Taron can’t stop thinking of! Willow has always had a crush on Taron and now she finally has the opportunity to seduce him… Taron wants Willow badly but a terrible prophecy he learned from his youth warns that if he ever falls in love he will experience unendurable pain, which makes him wary of love. But Toren finally realizes that Willow may be worth it all.
This was an amusing story. I liked that Eddy and Dax play prominent roles but my favorite sections were the grumpy sword that Taron carries named CrystalFire. The sword has a stubborn streak and is decidedly unfriendly but in a very funny way. I also liked that while Taron is intelligent and brave he doesn’t have the cocky self confidence that makes some alpha heroes a bit overbearing. Instead I found his doubts very endearing especially as he tries to fight the full frontal temptation of Willow who wants him at all costs. But once Taron decides to love, there is no holding back his devotion. Willow was a very lucky sprite!
This book is definitely one of my favorites in the DemonSlayer series and will not disappoint avid fans of the series.

The climax of the "Demonslayers" novels by Kate Douglas is at hand. The Demon King finds his way from the Abyss in an attempt to lure Dax within his grasp once again. He feels that the power of inhabiting and ruling from Dax's old demon body lies in conquering his immortal human body. And so when an effort to inhabit a Dog that Dax's immortal lover, Eddy, owns backfires and locks him instead into Eddy's father and spewing a life-size "Willow" (a will-o-the-wisp)into the world of man as a full sized human, it falls to the scholar, Taron, his sentient crystal sword and beautiful Willow to come up with a plan that will fell the evil growing within Ed Marks. In his bungling first attempt, the Demon King catches Eddy at a weak moment putting her consciousness into the void that held Dax captive for so long. With all help cutoff from the dimension that houses the Lemurians from Earth....humanity and all other dimensions must rely on The Scholarly warrior with a sword that has no confidence in his warrior, The will of a human possessed by evil to do no harm to his daughter, a beloved pet, now trapped in a beautiful sexually mature woman who used to be a tiny will-o-the-wisp and before that existed as swamp gas...what could possibly go wrong? Time is running out for everyone...they demonslayers must unite to save Eddy from the void, lest she be lost to them forever. Ed would rather die than see anyone suffer through his hands while in the control of the Demon King. And the parallel worlds are all in the hands of a scholar and a woman who used to exist as swamp gas...no one said it would be easy!
little Willow wisp finds herself in an adultsize body (with puppy Bumper in her head - instead of the other way around)... paired with Taron, philosopher/scientist, who is ever mindful of the gypsy's fortune telling saying he would find great love and great pain -so he is committed to staying away from love, and whose sword sends him to defeat the Demon King (to keep Dax away, because the demon wants to suck Dax's life into himself to become all powerful)
bothe Willow and Taron are virgins... and find sex and love... and the fortitude to destroy the Demon King...
thus Lemuria (freed of the demon presence) is free to return to their homeland/dimension... earth is safe... and the immortal demonslayers with their swords will ensure continued balance...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Talon is not interested in the women even though they show interest in him..
the only woman he has ever wanted to know better was only 2" high... Willow was a sprite, created to help Dax, but whose body was destroyed by the demon king.
She had moved her consciousness to the dog Bumper just in time .... so she is still around but not the way she wants...
I loved the way this story unfolds and the skillful way the unexplainable becomes plusible..
I liked Willow and Taron. I remembered their connection when they first met in Demonfire. I didn’t think anything would come of it, since she was only 2 inches tall. Though this book was probably my least favorite book of the series, I still enjoyed reading it. It was nice to see everyone for a final time. This series was such an unexpected treat from Kate Douglas. I’m sad to see it end.
This is the fourth book in the Demonslayers series, and it appears to end this series, too. I like series, but really like the ones that have an ending (before they get too tiresome). This series was enjoyable and it's nice to see couples from previous books continue on with the next.
Again we get back to long-winded meandering inner musings by the hero. I have to admit there is some inconsistency with the writing in this series. Books 1 & 3 were much better than books 2 & 4, the latter 2 books could have done with some editing.
I wanted to love this book but I didn't. It was merely OK. I had a hard time forcing myself to read it and I was actually glad when it was over so I could start a new book.
