Sul finire di agosto del 1889 Londra è in subbuglio. Nella soffocante calura estiva, a surriscaldare l'atmosfera contribuisce lo sciopero in massa dei portuali. Organizzati in un sindacato, i lavoratori dei moli londinesi protestano contro i salari da fame pagati dai proprietari degli scali. In questo clima di tensione e di violenza un caso apparentemente banale viene sottoposto all'attenzione di Sherlock Holmes. Un uomo è stato trovato morto, pugnalato alla schiena, in un vicolo nei pressi del pub Ten Bells, a Whitechapel. Al fratello della vittima, deluso dalla polizia che ha liquidato l'episodio come il tragico esito di una rissa tra ubriaconi irlandesi, non è rimasto che rivolgersi al grande investigatore. Molte cose a suo parere non quadrano; una su tutte, il presunto beone era un astemio convinto che non avrebbe avuto motivo di bazzicare ambienti malfamati. Ed è proprio là, tra le case fatiscenti e gli angoli tenebrosi dell'East End, che l'indagine conduce Holmes e il dottor Watson. Negli stessi luoghi senza pace già funestati dalle imprese di un famigerato assassino.

This book felt like stepping right into Victorian England, with all its charm, drama, and foggy streets. Even the stench from Thames. From the start, the tone was set, pulling you into its world effortlessly. None of the chapters dragged or felt out of place—it kept things moving at a nice pace.

That being said, I was hoping for a bit more excitement. It was good, but it could’ve used a touch more drama to really keep me hooked.

What stood out the most, though, was how well Walsh has captured the essence of Victorian England. You could practically hear the horses trotting by and feel the cold London mist.

Overall, it was a solid read. Maybe not the most thrilling, but definitely one that brings the period to life beautifully.

I have always loved the stories about Sherlock Holmes. Margaret Walsh captures his eras perfectly and each story has its clever deductions and humorous quips. This story is another enjoyable visit back to the 1880's with Sherlock and his companions.
