I usually don't read supernatural thrillers but after reading the summary for Syroia by Cheyenne Mitchell I was intrigued. This novel is a lot darker than I had expected. Not that I expected it to be all butterflies and rainbows but it did take me by surprise.

Syroria is the name of the town in which this novel takes place. It's a picturesque town that anyone would want to live. Syroria is named after one of Arquito's ancestors. The town has a lot of history and some of it is not so good. Arquito or Quito has grown up in this town. Everyone knows who he is and he's well liked. On Quito's 35th birthday he receives an old diary from his parents. The diary once belonged to his uncle who committed unspeakable crimes. His parents feel that by Quito reading the diary it might help him understand and put together bits and pieces of his past. The timeline in the story is split between the present and the past. At times is was a little confusing as I wasn't sure exactly when the story was taking place. However I did like this aspect of the story. I think it really added to making the story suspenseful.

Quinto is the main character of the story. He is from a prosperous family that holds dark secrets. Quinto's character was hard for me to get behind. On one hand I understand the reasons for his actions but on another, he commits heinous crimes that left me sick to my stomach. However his character is compelling and I didn't want to stop reading until I found out how this book ended. Syroria has a multitude of characters that have interesting stories as well. I really like Quinto's sister, Lucie. She marches to the beat of her own drum and is really brave.

There are parts of this book that I wish the author had offered a further explanation on such as the relationship between Quito's parents. I also would have liked to see more of the police investigation into the crimes. I really liked the historic element in the novel. I thought it was really interesting the way the information is uncovered.

Syroria is a novel that deals with issues such as the occult, demon possession and cover-ups. At times this book gave me chills. This book is not for the faint of heart because it does deal with heinous crimes. However if you're into suspenseful thrillers of the supernatural kind this book just might be for you.

Syroia is a refreshingly different story about love, family secrets, death, new life, and forgiveness. The author told me in an email that I wouldn't be able to put this book down and she was right, I couldn't, as I read it in less than one day. Written in the voice of the main character, Quito Desmunde, you will travel with him through parts of his life from present day to his mid twenties and through his reading of his Uncle Ross' diary (given to him on this 35th birthday) back to the early 1900's as Quito delves deeper and deeper into his families past. One the day Quito was born, his Uncle Ross hung himself at the age of 22. Ironically both occurred at the exact same moment. When Quinto reaches the age of 22, a terrifying series of events begin to occur and the body count starts to rise. Who is to blame for each murder? All Quinto knows is he is getting horrible headaches that bring about a haze and when he wakes up he is covered in blood with no recollection of what had transpired. The police have no suspects and no witnesses.
As Quinto will soon find out, this is not the first, or even the second time, the town of Syroia (named after his great great grandmother) has gone through this. The close-knit, wealthy, town-founding Desmunde family holds lots of secrets, and for good reason and some secrets are better left buried. As Quinto rushes to stop the murders and free himself and his family of an demonic demon forever, more bodies are discovered and people are not always who and what they appear to be. Quinto must also learn how to forgive not only himself but other family members as well so he is able to put the past behind him.

The writing was decent, a little redundant at times but not to distract from the story by any means. The beginning chapter introduces you to a lot of characters, as the Desmunde family is a numerous one, and I had a hard time keeping up with all of them at some points in the book. This one is very descriptive, which at first I thought was too much, but as I kept reading I felt like Quinto was sitting next to me telling me this story first hand. One thing that did bother me was the fact that the police were investigating these murders but there was never any DNA or physical evidence to link back to who was responsible. Granted at no point in the story is it in the perspective of the Sheriff, each Sheriff who had been investigating the murders over the years always had their suspicions of who was the culprit. This is a good easy read that will keep you reading until the last page. I thank the author, Miss Cheyenne Mitchell for sharing this great story with me and look forward to reading more from her!

Syroia by Miss Cheyenne Mitchell, is the story of Quito Desmunde, a man whose life seemed fairly normal until he turns 22. Having been born at the exact same time that his 22 year old Uncle Ross hung himself, you knew it wasn't just a coincidence. When Quito turns 22 he starts experiencing horrible, almost "migraine-like" headaches, that bring him into a haze which more or less causes him to blackout. When he wakes up from the blackouts he is covered in blood with no recollection of where he has been or what has happened. Since there are bodies piling up in the story, the police are obviously looking for someone to blame. The problem is, this is not the first time this has happened in the town of Syroia.

The Desmunde family is one with many, many secrets (which seems to be a theme in the two books I've read by Miss Cheyenne Mitchell) and they are also quite large. The story has a ton of characters who are introduced in the first few chapters and I actually had to write them all down with descriptions to keep track of them all.

I found the book very easy to read and I could hardly put it down. I really enjoyed Quito's character. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be in his shoes. A great read for any supernatural thriller lover.

SYROIA is NOT A CRIME/DETECTIVE novel. It is a SUPERNATURAL THRILLER! There is a big difference between the two genres. In SYROIA even the protagonist himself is a VICTIM not a KILLER!! The killer is a demonic force, A SUPERNATURAL force, not a physical one! I believe some reviewers are getting SYROIA confused with a CRIME/DETECTIVE thriller, and not the SUPERNATURAL THRILLER that is truly is. I ask that readers and reviewers will please approach SYROIA as what it is.....a SUPERNATURAL THRILLER. IT IS NOT A CRIME/DETECTIVE novel!
