Superhero: The Revenge of the Mcnasty Brothers by Greg Trine is a great book about a young boy named Melvin who went to the superhero academy and is now a superhero in L.A. In this book, the McNasty Brothers, some all around bad guys who Melvin had previoulsy put in jail, get broken out by their sisters. Since they know that Melvins weakness is bologna, they have a plan. They trap Melvin and his sidekick Candace in a bologna factory with 6 tons of bologna inside. Will they be able t escape?

Characters- Melvin- Graduated from the superhero academy, a young superhero who patrols L.A. he is very smart- a math genius t be exact, witty, and strong. His only weakness is bologna.
Candace- Melvins partner in un-crime. she is a third grader who can fly and dumk a basketball. She is smart, strong, and determined.
The Mcnasty brothers-All around bad guys. they smell bad, look bad and do bad. They are evil, and dumb.
The Mcnasty sisters- just like the brothers, they smell bad, look bad, and do bad. they are the ones who broke the brothers out of prison. They are dumb, evil, and loyal.

The plot is very interesting, it keeps you hooked. The theme is like an imaginary world but still not too crazy. The characters are funny, and fun to follw. The writing style is very funny. He breaks he fourth wall a lot, and talks to the reader, and even the characters sometimes as the narrator.

I would recommend this book for anyone that likes fiction or adventure.

This one hit a stride in the series, and I was glad to see that women can be villains, too. The attempt of the McNasty's to up the ante this time was very clever, although I didn't appreciate his sidekick being the damsel in distress, such a cliche.

Series impressions: Clever and funny, very relatable for kids who want to be superheros. I like that his sidekick is an African American girl, although I was not pleased that she has trouble in math, and it is Melvin that has to solve their problems with "noggin' power." Still, she has superhero powers, can fly more easily than Melvin, and the the two have entertaining interactions. Bonus: contains occasional subtle humor for any adults who may be narrating.

I don't necessarily dislike these books, but I don't really like them either. As a read-aloud they are pretty forgettable (I can never remember what happened in the previous chapters) and there's not much that is hooking me in. However, as far as early chapter books for young readers, I suppose they're fine. The illustrations are cute and the kids-as-superheroes characters are interesting enough for my 7-year-old.

The brave Superhero Melvin and his partner in uncrime, Candance Brinkwater are back. Not only do they have to deal with the McNasty brothers again, but the McNasty sisters too. Quadruple the stink! And they think to use Melvin's weakness against him again. What will the superheroes do?

I've been reading this fun series with my seven and a half year old son. He thinks they're hilarious!

In this second installment in the series, the McNasty Bothers escape from jail with the help of their sisters. Just as bad as the brothers, Puke & Mudball, also help the brothers to get revenge on Melvin-trying again with dreaded baloney. But our superheroes will prevail.

Superhero Melvin and his sidekick Candance are out beating the McNasty brothers (and sisters) again while also fending off bullies, learning to speak rat and discovering ways to defend themselves from their superpower sucking nemesis: bologna. Very funny and fast-paced. My only complaint is that the superheros wrap themselves in plastic wrap to escape the effects of the bologna. I certainly hope kids don't get the idea to try that at home.

Recommended for grades 2-4.

This book desperately wants to be Captain Underpants. The problem is it not only lacks the bathroom humour of its inspiration, it is too self-aware. This leads to heavy handed references to letting some badguys get away because they need villains for the next book. It's as if the author thinks being meta involves only a large wink at the audience.

Kids that love the My Weird School Days and Captain Underpants Series will also clamor for Melvin Beederman Books! The repetitive language makes the stories not only humorous (tying them all together) but are great for building reading confidence. Not to mention how cool it is to find all that in a series where you know the next one is available to pick up and keep them reading!

More fun with Melvin Beederman and his sidekick Candace Brinkwater! This also has the addition of the McNasty sisters (Puke and Mudball). My children and I enjoyed this as a light bedtime read. Good pick for kids who like superhero themes and humor!
