About the author

Claude Roy, writer: born Paris 28 August 1915; twice married, secondly to Loleh Bellon (one son); died Paris 13 December 1997.
The son of the artiste-peintre Felicien Roy, Claude Roy was born with an eye for the unusual and colourful, and an ear for words so acute, he always seemed like a child learning to speak and read.

Several of his best known books are rhymes, poems and absurd tales for the young of all ages, illustrated by well-known artists, among whom he had many friends, including Picasso, Balthus, Zao Wou Ki and Zoran Music. Roy's last work was a book on his friend, Balthus (1996). His most enchanting children's books, two volumes of Enfantasques (1974 and 1978) are illustrated by his own witty collages. He wrote a delightful book about the art of painting, inspired by memories of watching his father at work, in L'Amour de la peinture (1955).

Claude Roy foi um dos mais destacados escritores (também) para crianças da França. Este é o livro mais conhecido dele e, ao que consta na quarta capa, é leitura recomendada nas escolas. Com apoio do Google Translate para os trechos mais enrolados (eu não leio bem em francês), atravessei com alegria um belo livro: sucinto, simples e surpreendente.

O gato Gaspard, após mordiscar uma estranha erva no jardim de casa, passa a falar. Ele ainda ronrona e mia, mas suas reações agora lhe vêm mais naturalmente em palavras, aliás, em palavras enfileiradas à perfeição em versos rimados. Ele comenta sobre seu novo dom com o superconfiável menino Thomas (numa das amizades mais bem escritas entre criança e animal que eu já li), pedindo-lhe que jamais conte a alguém seu segredo. E por quê? Porque "para viver bem, viva escondido". Gaspard tem medo da atenção desmedida que vai receber, dos experimentos aos quais cientistas vão querer submetê-lo, dos programas de entrevista a que terá de ir e, se ele se revelar um poeta maldito, já tem traçado seu destino: morar debaixo da ponte, trêbado de absinto, morto de fome.

O livro é lindo: o menino defende como pode seu gato (finge que é ventríloquo, assim as poesias do gato parecem vir dele), o gato defende como pode o menino e sua família, e às vezes não se controla, pensa em voz alta e acaba dizendo algumas verdades para uma fofoqueira malvada da língua afiada e um farmacêutico que acredita que uma boa medida para conter a reprodução descontrolada dos gatos é afogar parte dos filhotes (!).

Gaspard quer sossego, quer receber carinho, quer fazer filhinhos com a linda gata Minna (ui), ou seja, ele quer viver em paz, longe dos holofotes, dos ruídos, de um possível prêmio Nobel de literatura, de dinheiro, de aborrecimento, de convites para fazer cinema, da pressão para emitir opiniões sobre tudo, da obrigação de revelar os segredos mais íntimos dos gatos ao mundo. É um livro movimentado, cheio de peripécias e mal-entendidos, e, ao mesmo tempo, uma das histórias mais singelas e cativantes sobre paz de espírito, a beleza da vida simples, a honra entre amigos, a dignidade e o silêncio. Belíssimo e, de brinde, uma surpresa no fim.

Great book for someone trying to learn French! Mostly written in passé simple which can make it tricky to identify which verbs are being used if you aren’t familiar with all the conjugations. (Such as étreindre). Story has a nice message and is easy to follow along even if you don’t want to look up all of the adjectives you might not know. Though it’s a children’s book, I really enjoyed it as an adult. May the thrill of being able to understand everything as an anglophone trying to become fluent in French was part of the thrill. It maybe wouldn’t be as exciting if I had read it in English.

"El gato que hablaba a pesar de todo" nos cuenta las aventuras de Lord Gaspar Mac Kitycat, decimocuarto Duque de Garth y sus amigos.

Gaspar desarrolló la habilidad de hablar después de comer una planta y... Mejor no les cuento más para que vayan a leer este libro cortico pero maravilloso sobre la sabiduría de los gatos.

Si son #catlovers cómo nosotras, les va a gustar. En Colombia pueden encontrarlo en Panamericana.

“Con mèo tự dưng biết nói” là một cuốn sách thiếu nhi dễ đọc và phù hợp với tất cả mọi người, đặc biệt là những bạn yêu mèo. Không chỉ kể lại câu chuyện đầy dễ thương và hóm hỉnh về chú mèo Gaspard bỗng một ngày tự dưng biết nói (và biết cả làm thơ nữa), tác phẩm còn chứa đựng rất nhiều thông điệp ý nghĩa mà tác giả muốn truyền tải đến bạn đọc. Mình rất thích và đồng ý với suy nghĩ của nhà văn Claude Roy về nhiều vấn đề trong cuộc sống. Cuốn sách cũng thể hiện rõ ràng quan điểm sáng tác của ông. Claude Roy “không cho rằng một nhà văn phải nói với trẻ em giống như là với những kẻ chậm hiểu và nói với người lớn như là họ đã mãi mãi hết tuổi thơ” (theo phần giới thiệu sách của AlphaBooks). Đây chính xác là những gì mình tìm kiếm ở một cuốn sách thiếu nhi. Không chỉ có nội dung thú vị, “Con mèo tự dưng biết nói” còn có nhiều tranh minh hoạ cực kì hay ho, dễ thương và ngộ nghĩnh. Lời dịch gần gũi, sinh động và hóm hỉnh. Phần thơ cũng được dịch rất ấn tượng. Cuốn sách đã thể hiện tình cảm sâu sắc cũng như sự trân trọng mà tác giả dành cho trẻ em và loài mèo. Tóm lại, tác phẩm này không chỉ là món quà tuyệt vời cho các em thiếu nhi mà còn giúp người lớn có những phút giây thư giãn đầy vui vẻ và bắt gặp lại những bài học ý nghĩa mà có thể đôi khi chúng ta vô tình lãng quên.

Un beau matin, sans crier gare, Gaspard, le Cher Ami Chat de Thomas, se surprend en train de parler. Il parle en prose, et même en vers. On aurait pour moins la tête à l'envers. En lisant l'histoire absolument vraie du chat-parleur au terrible secret, on verra comment le noble Gaspard parvint à surmonter cet étrange avatar. Chat-malin, chat-poète, et génie des matous, modèle des amis, modèle des époux, Gaspard le beau parleur gardera-t-il son secret jusqu'au bout?
