The United States has been fighting a war on poverty for nearly forty years and yet poverty seems as entrenched as ever in American society. The chapters in this anthology include an examination of urban poverty, government and grass-roots solutions to poverty, and personal views of life in the poor inner-city.

This book was very informative. Despite being several years old, and therefor having outdated information, it brings up many interesting points. With each topic they bring up a view that supports it and one that argues against it. It really made me think of all the things that are being done and how they are and aren't working. At the end are accounts of real people and their own accounts of their poverty.

This book is a collection of many short articles from varied viewpoints; some articles are better reasoned and written than others. The chapter on Causes of Poverty was particularly insightful, and the importance of families is clearly noted in several chapters.
