The Violent Foam: New and Selected Poems

Rate this book
The Violent Foam includes selections from Zamora's previous acclaimed books and poems written since 1993. Her new poems, beautifully translated by the poet George Evans, continue her lyrical, clear-sighted vision of the world with humor and gentle irony. Zamora illuminates, with wit and passion, the personal and public issues of our time.
LASSIE
(Autobiography)

It's true. I was faithful.
My one desire was to be patted
on the head
by a disdainful hand.
And happily wagging that tail
I ran in circles, barked, and rolled around
to welcome the master.

• THE VIOLENT FOAM by Daisy Zamora, translated by George Evans

THE VIOLENT FOAM blends Sandinista inspired poetry and songs with Zamora's familiar themes of women's rights and feminism with clever everyday observations, and travel anecdotes.

My second time reading this seminal Nicaraguan poet. Though these poems still read better to me in the Spanish, here's a favorite:

Minimal Elegy

A simple woman just died.
Her life as a nurse’s aide
was useful to humanity.

She didn’t own supermarkets,
or banks,
exploited no one.

That is to say, she wasn’t harmful
like tycoons,
dictators,
geniuses of finance,
and those politicians.

The news of her death
will not be published
in any newspaper.
There will be no paid announcements
offering condolences
to her family.

ÁNGELA RAYO,
may this fragile gravestone
mark your name
and guard your memory.

“Al fin y al cabo, es hombre,
y los hombres
yerran
Pero no la madre, por siempre obligada a tal perfección
que ha de morir para lograrla”
