Second Star: Poetry of the Conscious State by Puranjay Khanna is a collection of 110 poems and prose that aren't confined to a single theme but carry the essence of life in them.
With the experience of life and its journey, the poet tries to compile them into this collection with the metaphor of imagination, poetry, and written words.
The post very beautifully used the figures of speech at places, and the rhyming schemes that were followed were a delight to read. It's rare nowadays to read poems having rhyming schemes that do not hinder the meaning behind it but enhance it and this one comes into the latter.
The repetition of sentences multiple times in a poem elevates the essence of them in various poems, and it provides a wonderful experience.
As the poet said in the prologue - one can understand the value of life by hearing the story of a single life and this book is his story. Thus, the poems in the collection do not roam into imagination only but can be felt through the experiences, visuals, and stories from people from different aspects of life or maybe imagined, thus making it a lot more relatable and grounded.
I enjoyed and connected with many of them, but like any other collection, there were a few with which I did not feel connected or engaged. Overall, it was a collection that kept me hooked, looked around, and understood the value of life from more perspectives. If you want to read poetry that is simple yet engaging and covers a vast range of themes about life, this one is for you.

“I realised that life has no meaning. It is we who give meaning and purpose to life”
- Puranjay Khanna, Second Star
The poetic pieces provide an abstract inner view of the self and the world surrounding it. They are mostly written in repetition format having a rhythmic scheme. The verses are thought-provoking and are heavily influenced by the events that plague the society. The poet is a philosopher who has an optimistic outlook of life which speaks volumes on why the poems end with hope. The prose emphasizes the fallacies of a beautiful creation i.e mind which has boundless imagination. The reverie is burst and reality dawns on the narrator. The vagaries of life are presented as a tantalizing dance of bewitching words and is correlated to the limitless universe.
One of my favourite poems in the collection is “Wandering Wonder” in which the writer urges us to take a step back from the chaos and bask in the beauty of the universe.
“Warrior” is another piece that resonated with me as we, human beings can go far to safeguard our family and loved ones not by bloodshed but by simple acts of love, care and protection.
The blend of prose and verse along with poetic style of words and expression will definitely linger in my mind.
“Dont give up on yourself Don't give in to sorrow I can promise you this You'll have a better tomorrow”
"Accepting that from every conscious level Every individual has something different to learn We achieve A progressive state of consciousness Instead of forcing Assimilation's burn"
Second Star : Poetry of the Conscious State by Puranjay Khanna is a collection of poetry and prose inspired by diverse themes.
First reason why I liked the book is because it's very rare that such a combination of poetry and prose can be available to a reader in one book. It went perfect with my mood this month. Second is the emphasis of the underlying meaning of the poems. They're based on so many different approaches rather than what I usually read that is romance and nature love. This book has those too though. I remember reading a poem which felt it was written from a perspective of heartbreak, but even that felt fresh. Also genuinely loved the title. Very beautifully penned it down, I believe.
Next, as it happens with all poetry books - there were some poems I would say I couldn't relate to. They were easy to understand but felt like some passages of feelings unknown to me. I'm sure life would introduce those soon.
The language used by the writer is one filled with literary eloquence. You'll feel the charm of words, the rich poetry devices, the rhyming factor.
Puranjay Khanna's poetry collection takes readers on a journey into the imaginary world of a young boy's development.
Through the use of poetry and written language, Khanna skillfully captures the core of the coming-of-age process, fusing the complexity of development with the simplicity of the creative ability.
The novel gives readers a peek into the protagonist's changing mentality as he experiences life's ups and downs over several years and interactions.
Because of the use of metaphor and imagery, the story has depth, and readers may relate to the protagonist's journey on a personal level.
Second Star is exceptional for its ability to evoke strong feelings and encourage self-reflection.
Readers are given a close-up view of the protagonist's environment through each poem, which acts as a mirror reflecting his deepest thoughts and feelings.
Khanna explores themes of identity, time passing, and self-discovery throughout the novel. As he wrestles with life's uncertainties and accepts the power of imagination in making sense of the outside world, the protagonist's growth is evident.
Everything considered, Second Star is a moving and insightful examination of youth and self-awareness.
I enjoyed the range of poems where I felt that at the heart of this book lies a profound exploration of the human condition and the portrait of experience. The author delves into a myriad of themes, from duality to self-discovery and existential angst. I loved the poetic construction where each poem is a window into the inner workings of the human psyche, offering readers a glimpse into the complexities of emotion and thought.
One of the strengths of this book lies in is its versatility. The author has demonstrated a remarkable range in style and tone, effortlessly transitioning from introspective meditations to vibrant expressions of passion and the nuances of life's journey. Some of my favourite poetic pieces include ‘Voyager’, ‘The Psychopath Parable’, and ‘Brain Cloud’ where the author took an unconventional approach and expressed it in lyrical manner.
There is only one drawback where I felt that certain poems have an abrupt finish and the sentence construction could have been better.
Overall, this book is a beautiful work of poetic expression that transcends boundaries and resonates on an emotional level. The author’s evocative verses and keen insights into the human experience make this collection a standout addition to the world of contemporary poetry.
‘The only proof that we ever existed at all now voyages through this vast and empty space driven by proving to those beyond that Yes we are here and we are waiting. We come in peace and purest of love, The Romance of the Stars.’

This book is a bunch of poems, verses and notes showing how a boy grows up to be a man in this world slowly by self inspection and outer world understanding by using imagination, poetry, and words.
It covers many years, sharing different experiences, and follows the journey of a mind growing up.
I absolutely love the cover. The illustration of a silent kid sitting under the stark black sky with different phases of moon in the background sparks so many emotions. Its like the moon represents the life's transitions.
There are plethora of poems and notes, to be exact 110 pieces in this collection. Mostly metaphorical in nature. But still lucid enough to comprehend and absorb. The poetry is deep rooted in understanding consciousness of an individual and overcome societal and peer pressure at every stage and stand free of ties. It is about the hidden ability of an individual which must not emanate from the feer of societal acceptance and rather break ties inorder to become empowered and control their own thoughts. In a way we must see and perceive things as we wish to comprehend and live life because there is no end to the thoughts.
These chapters are well curated and descriptive enough in expressing the various emotions of fear, love, hate, sorrow and happiness through the poetic lines and how they attribute to changing human life. It is descriptive yet riddled enough to hide the emotions in the same poetic lines.

A compilation of poetry and short stories, Second Star is a treasure trove of seeing the world through someone’s eyes. The writing covers a variety of subjects and touches upon life, politics, the world we live in and relationships.
While reading I realised that a lot of these poems have deeper, darker undertones that I wasn’t expecting. However, this made for a richer reading experience where I looked for the more meaning in each poem and tried to understand it from multiple perspectives.
One of the most positive and interesting poems for me is ‘Ease’. It is a long one, but here are a couple of lines that made me think harder about my life and introspect on what is important to me:
‘The birth of an idea is like a breeze Realising now that you are at ease
