Woohoo! Stu & I have just finished the first draft of GYM OR CHOCOLATE! And next week he's shooting the cover. Why am I not on it AGAIN! Stu! Dude! It's MY turn to be on the cover of one of our books!
Heh heh! Nah, I know you wouldn't want me on the cover SIGH. I'll leave that to the good-looking ripped guy.
We've had a ton of fun writing this - hope you love it, too! Coming to your kindles on 13th September!
First of all, I absolutely love the combination of sassy heroine and grumpy hero. This is like the best formula for some great banter and this book didn't disappoint. I mean, Cady is just wow. The scenes where she was riling up Rick were so funny. And her comebacks - seriously, I was in awe of her quick-wittedness because yep, I'm one of those people who think of a clever comeback hours after having the conversation. So yeah, Cady was freaking awesome, not to forget her absolute confidence in her body even BEFORE she started to work out.
“It must be hard being on the larger side.” “Not something you'd know about.”– Cady to asshole co-worker
Rick was... harder to like than Cady. At first, that is. I'd say my first impression of him was "overly stiff". I wasn't sure what to think of him as the hero of the story but fortunately, it didn't take long for me to start warming up to him. There was a reason why he was the way he was and I just loved the development of his character over the course of the book.
Slowburn romance! So bonus points for that + a strong message behind the story so all in all a winner I'd say :)
Why not 5 stars? – The conflict could have been solved in one conversation but was drawn out due to the big gesture factor. That really frustrated me but I understood why the authors did it that way. – I was a little weirded out by the sex scene. It was odd, I don't know how else to describe it. Definitely not your typical sex scene lol
**ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review.
This is a hard one for me to review. It was entertaining at times, implausible at others. I liked that Cady owned who she was and really didn't give a rat's ass what anyone else thought about her- that was refreshing. I liked that she didn't back down in the face of her detractors and haters. She was funny and witty, and larger than life.
But there came a point when I wanted, needed, her to let go of the doughnuts. I mean, I feel you Cady, I do, I love me some doughnuts. Yet I know if I wanted to fully commit to running a marathon in a year, I'd have to make some concessions, and one of those would be giving up eating doughnuts Every.Single.Day. The book should have really been titled Gym or Doughnuts?, as much as our heroine enjoyed them. And I'm not saying that to be snarky- that really was her sweet treat of choice.
And yes, I know it's not all about the doughnuts.
I wanted to love this story, I really did. A plus-size heroine who loves her food and doesn't care what people think about her, and who falls in love with her personal trainer? Yes, please! While it was an entertaining read, and I'm sure many will love it, unfortunately Gym or Chocolate? just didn't resonate with me like I hoped. I never really felt the connection or attraction between Rick and Cady. I really did appreciate that Cady stayed true to herself, and showed the world you didn't need to be a size 0 to find love and be happy.

Ok. So, Stuart Reardon and Jane Harvey-Berrick are back writing together. This time with a romantic comedy. And what do I have to say about it? They nailed it!
I absolutely love this partnership of theirs! You know at first I as skeptical (because it's not always I like books written by a duo of authors) when they released Undefeated, but it was so good and then came Model Boyfriend and with "Gym or Chocolate?" they've defintely solidified their writing partnership! I absolutely love how those two write together!
This is a different side of them and I think it's fantastic! The sense of humor was so on point that I was literally laughing out loud while reading this book. It's funny in the right measure. When I first met Jane and Stuart here in Brazil they were doing research for this book. Jane had the super hard task of observing Stuart and Vincent's work out sessions. LOL. And I gotta say it paid off.
I love that this is a book with a heroine that is very real. Cady is overweight, yes, but she isn't concerned about being skinny and because of Rick she becomes more conscious of how her body can benefit from being more fit. But although it deals with fitness it's not like a fitness bible or an ode to the perfect body. Just the opposite. Cady and Rick are very different, but they go to show that different people really can find the middle ground and things in common.
I loved that this book dealt with weight, fitness and eating habits in a humorous way and that it wasn't the main focus of the story. No. I love that it was about reaching a goal and working for it. Either you want to lose weight, run a marathon, become a better person, change careers or just go through with your day. Having a goal and working for it makes a whole lot of difference.
And Jane and Stu write this story not only in a funny way, but it's also so relatable! You can't help to relate to Cady and also to Rick. And you can see the connection between them, which makes it easy to connect with the story. I couldn't put this book down and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cady is my new spirit animal and I love how she deals with what life throws at her with humor and she doesn't let anything get her down. She's very mature and I wish I could be like her. I have my own issues with fitness and for me it's a health requirement, but I completely understand how hard it felt for her to begin it.
Also, she definitely inspired me and now I want to run a marathon too. And now I need a Rick to cheer me up!!
"Gym or Chocolate?" also is a slow-burn kind of romance and I appreciate that. It made me have time to feel the characters and fall in love with them. I liked that they didn't rush into things and they actually got to know each other. Sometimes I missed something else through the story, but I understand the focus was different. And I'm okay with that.
Ohhh also there are some familiar characters in this book doing cameos (if you've read Undefeated you'll recognize them) and Vin stole the show in a some scenes. He is hilarious. And having met the real Vincent, who inspired Vin, I can say they are very much the same and it was funny figuring that out. It was very fun.
I don't want to give spoilers or re-tell the story in my review, but I will say this: you will definitely have fun reading Gym or Chocolate and that for me is already a win. You will also fall in love with charactes, their goals and the way Stu and Jane write together. They are the perfect duo and complement each other so well! I hope they keep writing together, because they're doing something fantastic!!
I have to say I'm hard to please when it comes to rom coms; my default setting tends to be scorn rather than lol'ing. Well this one did actually tickle my funny bone and made me laugh out loud. That never happens.
The other thing to note was that, even though it was a relatively light read, Cady's determination to train and achieve her goals really resonated with me.
Three years ago in May I joined a gym. I'd joined gyms before and hated it, forcing myself to go and begrudging the monthly subs. Anyway, I felt crappy and lethargic most of the time so I gave it a go. I started off by going to yoga and Pilates classes and to my amazement, enjoyed them. I'm not bendy and I had too much skin in the way to get into some poses but I persevered. Gradually I increased the classes to include cardio and weights classes and started eating better. Two years later I was 5 stone lighter and my daily heart burn and indigestion had gone. I felt so much better. For the last year I made exercising and eating better into my new normal. I now do 10 classes a week, every week. I flipping love it. I'm not skinny, never will be, but I feel so much better. So yes, this story spoke to me.
It's funny, it's inspiring and it's uplifting. Recommended. Complete story.
I absolutely loved and laughed through this whole book. It was epic and made me want to get off my ass and walk and run. I honestly was convinced this was going to be a five star read and it was up until 96% and then it took a nose dive into the weird and uncomfortable. And it just couldn’t be redeemed after that.
The author duo has returned with a refreshing release, featuring a heroine who is overweight. Not something you see often in the romance genre.
Cady Callahan is the host of a popular radio show in NYC, Morning Munchies. She loves her life and has no aspirations to change anything. That is until she has a run-in with internet bully, Molly McKinney (you might remember this witch from Undefeated, this duo's first collaboration). It is during this encounter that Molly basically goads Cady into training to run the NY Marathon, telling Cady in no uncertain terms, that she's too fat to compete in such a race.
As I mentioned, Cady is happy with her life, and despite the extra pounds she carries, has no plans to exercise or diet. But Molly's challenge gives her radio station publicity that they want to take advantage of, so Cady is forced to take on the challenge. Along for the ride, reluctantly, is Rick Roberts, the owner of Body Tech, who is tasked with training her for the marathon.
As you can guess, there is a lot of fat shamming in this book - led by Molly and her awful followers. I thought they authors handled this well in that every awful word they spewed made me love the heroine more. What I loved about the story and Cady, is she refused to change who she was - a woman who loves food that may not be great for her. Instead, with Rick's help, she finds a balance, adding exercise to her daily routine without skipping out on the food she craves.
I was concerned about the romantic element in this story, as I knew there'd be one. My concern was that Rick would only take notice of her after she lost weight. However, his attraction to Cady is much more gradual. I think the reader will notice it before he does, and the attraction seems to be more than just about appearances. Rick is overwhelmed by Cady's fighting spirit and crazy ways and can't seem to let anyone else in her space. Is he perfect in this book? No, he makes mistakes, but I understood why he made them and certainly makes up for things later.
If you are looking for a good story about overcoming bullies and the path woman takes to achieving her goals, check this one out!
I just read Gym or Chocolate. I laughed out loud multiple times. And the romance is amazing and slow build.
Heroine is a plus size woman who stars on a very popular morning radio show. She enters a raffle at a veteran's charity and accidentally wins gym training sessions at a very expensive gym where celebrities go to train for movies.
She has no intention of using the prize until a very mean woman says of course she wouldn't she's so fat. So she says she'll run the New York City marathon.
This starts off an amazing love story with the owner of the gym who feels he's now got his reputation at stake.
Hero is very "in shape" and has long hair he wears in a man bun. He's also a bit older 40ish and has strands of silver in his beard.
Had some pretty funny moments, the things the heroine said were outrageous.
DNF @ 14% I felt like the description of the heroine and the antics surrounding her were outlandish. No pseudo-celebrity could get away with full on calling someone fat or any other offensive slur on national television. Also her eating habits etc seemed played up, like that was what was expected for an overweight person to eat etc. I don't know. Instead of being relatable and endearing it came across as unbelievable and scripted. 2*not working for me*stars
Cady and Rick share nothing in common. She’s an outspoken, snarky, confident, overweight radio host extraordinarie...indifferent to unflattering comments about her plus size including insensitive remarks made by family members.
Rick is an ex-rugby player, now turned fitness professional.
They both attend a highly regarded fundraiser and Cady is accosted by a miserable b-list ‘influencer’ issuing scathing remarks. Cady is the recipient of a year’s fitness membership and personal training with Rick, however their meeting can only be described as an unmitigated disaster.
Sharing airtime on a widely syndicated chat show and being subjected to ridicule forces Cady to throw a gauntlet announcing her intention to run a marathon which causes their lives to intersect.
Rick and Cady’s interaction is animated. Their sessions are sheer torture. She’s passed wind ‘methane power’, vomited all over him, sweated, given him a concussion, etc.
Running together, she shows up eating a glazed doughnut, prepared for the seventies, in Jane Fondaesque style complete with sweatband, spandex shorts, sleeveless t-shirt, striped leg warmers, neon green running shoes for maximum public humiliation and effect.
He is compelled to purchase sports bras for her after colliding with a cyclist from the distraction of her unconfined mammary glands.
The snide exchanges between Cady and Molly was fodder for entertainment, excerpts:::
“I maintain my big *ss so more people can kiss it, honey” “I wouldn’t go near your fat arse with a ten-foot pole” “If you’re looking for a pole, you have one sticking out of your bony butt” “Listen, blondie, fat is a temporary caloric imbalance, but stupid is a permanent genetic malfunction”...funny.
The adage of ‘the road to hell paved with good intentions’ applies to Rick and Cady’s attraction.
‘Our Fitness Journeys’ is relatable and also a testament for us lean ladies who might not struggle with weight-specific challenges, yet we are predisposed to genetic risk factors. Exercise and proper nutrition maintains a healthy lifestyle whilst integral for continued good health and extending the quality of life.
It was validating to read a book based on a sensitive subject, appreciating that Cady celebrated the person within and garnered unconditional acceptance and support.

Gym or Chocolate is simply splendid! Jane Harvey-Berrick and Stuart Reardon prove once more just how beautifully they write together with this heartwarming romp featuring the extremely witty Cady Callahan and the brooding Rick Roberts. These two couldn't be more different if they tried. Yet somehow, through the magic of this incredible duo's words, Cady and Rick find themselves gradually drifting into a bit more than just a client/trainer relationship.
The loud-mouthed, zaftig radio host and the too sexy for his own good, ripped personal trainer. Thrown together for the sake of charity, their banter was off the charts hysterical! I couldn't stop chuckling as Rick tries his damnedest to get Cady to put down her beloved lemon-glazed donuts and pick up some weights instead. But Cady is no wallflower and has a perfect comeback for every muttered sigh and shake of Rick's gorgeous curls as she ups her game and decides to want to run in the NYC Marathon.
And then it really gets interesting!!! With scorned lovers and the very nasty Molly always around to provide a reason to try even harder, I was in awe of how Cady continually held her head high and said a huge eff you to those who thought she should be anything but who she was. She is the consummate role model for those who want to feel comfortable in their skin, even when the world says otherwise. I just love her.
There are the perfect secondary characters who keep our couple on track, and they provide more sharp humor that keeps this story light and lovely. This book is not the usual rom-com since there is much more than just the usual one-liners and silly situations. Instead we are treated to a tale full of a ton of heart and two flawed people who find love in the most unexpected of ways.
I couldn't get enough of the formidable Cady and her sexy Rick as they navigate through a surprise friendship that becomes so much more. A few scenes had me smiling huge as they start falling without either of them noticing. The writing is flawless and full of charm and is sure to be a favorite for 2019.
I hope Harvey-Berrick and Reardon decide to give us a bit more of this crew. They are memorable and full of life. Gym or Chocolate? Thankfully we don't have to choose and in the end, neither does our spectacular couple.
A breath of fresh air when everything seems to be the same old same old, I happily give Gym or Chocolate 5 huge stars!
Writing duo, Reardon and Harvey-Berrick have pulled out the stops and delivered a gem of a rom-com which had me in stitches and got me hooked from the first chapter. So, Gym or Chocolate? It’s the perfect title but in reality, not an easy choice to make if you’re lacking in willpower like me. I have to confess that as I read on, Cady Callahan with her extra pounds and sassy comebacks quickly became my kinda woman. And Rick Roberts, gym entrepreneur, trainer and owner of an elite fitness club certainly gave me food for thought. No pun intended, but who hasn’t had a sugar craving at one time or another and not felt guilty? There’s so much more to this delicious story than just getting hot and bothered and sweaty in the gym though.
“Baby steps, Rick. Baby steps— that’s what you told me and I’m sticking to it.”
Rick encourages us to take a look at our daily habits and what we’re doing wrong. He explains why we should look after ourselves and regardless of whatever handicap we may have, staying fit enhances our lifestyle and eating healthy food matters. Well, he got the latter part right ‘cause that’s something I make sure I do. However, this grouchy guy wiggled his way into my heart at the same pace as the book. Fast! I felt sorry for him on different levels. Firstly, he’s trying his utmost to keep his top-notch clientele satisfied, not doing what he really loves as an injury put a stop to his sports career and then Cady struts into personal space as big as life. She’s not what he bargained for, but seeing as she’d won the prize of a year’s membership to get her body in shape at Body Tech, he has little alternative but to get on with the job. The other reasons Rick saddened me I’d rather not mention but I’ll just say that his sensitivity melted my heart.
“And what is it with you and donuts? That is not the right thing to eat before a run. It’s probably the worst breakfast you could have!”
“Oh don’t worry, I ate a bar of chocolate earlier. I’m good.”
Cady frustrates the pants off Rick, and even though he won’t admit it, she’s a pleasant surprise and manages to make him smile. How could she not? She’s hilarious, adorable, generous of heart and spirit, and the fact that she showed me how headstrong she is when her downfall is lemon sugar-coated doughnuts, made me realise that anyone can make the best of a bad situation if they want to. I really liked how she took the bull by the horns and not just with her own hang-ups. Not one to hold her tongue, she prods Rick into confronting his issues head-on. Ooh, and he blushes, ladies! Rick is a tad naïve as far as the opposite sex is concerned and Cady being Cady either pulls his leg about it or tries to guide him in the right direction. I tell you, she’s the total package!
“… Sometimes he swaps his glare for a scowl. And then he frowns. I’m not sure if that means he’s moody or whether I irritate him,”
Rick and Cady are like chalk and cheese. She’s outgoing and boisterous, he’s out of his element when not training. Understandably, his words don’t flow nearly as easily as hers, so what do they have in common? Both of them are honest, hard-working and kind-hearted folk who gradually gain each other’s respect and build a special friendship. Innuendos intermingled with off the charts banter, chemistry that simmers until it reaches boiling point and a feel-good storyline result is the perfect end of summertime read. I adored how Rick was there for Cady when the going gets tough; yep, he’s a true Yorkshire gentleman I literally swooned over!
“Are you going to get yourself a sports bra now?”She glanced sideways and grinned at me. “No way! I’m having far too much fun watching your face—it takes my mind off what we’re actually doing.”
Of course, every good story needs a baddie or two and in that respect, the authors gave me a couple I’d have gladly strangled with my bare hands. The majority of the secondary characters are totally likeable. Rick's best mate, Vin, had me in fits, swears like a trooper and dishes out dodgy advice like hotcakes and Grace, Cady’s bestie is lovely.
‘Was that an ab under the flab? I fingered my stomach tentatively. Could a person have just one ab? Didn’t they usually come in pairs, like a salt and pepper set?’
Written from a dual perspective in past is my fave narrative technique. You get to hear both sides of the story and listening to both Rick and Cady’s inner thoughts was a privilege. Gym or Chocolate is a must-one-click I can’t recommend enough. Bravo Reardon and Harvey-Berrick!
Wow! This book was amazing! My first with Jane and Stuart writing together and definitely not my last. It was so so refreshing to read a heroine that wasn't super skinny, size zero and had to really work to exercise. I truly loved how she accepted herself and from someone who has been there and knows how hard that is, it was truly relatable and kind of inspiring. The banter in this book was hilarious and had me giggling from the beginning to the end. I will be recommending this book to all my slimming club and zumba friends.
I kind of wish they never threw out her weight and height because I spent the whole book thinking wow, these are horrific comments for someone who looks like most women.
I thought this book was funny until the final sex scene where Rick undergoes a full personality transplant and feeds her every dessert in bed. Props for 5 donuts fitting on his dingaling though.
I laughed my patootie off! I started and couldn’t put it down until I finished this fun read with serious issues such as fat shaming and the damage social media attacks can cause to reputations, business and maybe most of all someone’s self image and feelings. I love everything about Cady, the big gal that’s up for any challenge. She is just what you want in a heroine. Funny, smart, sexy, beautiful inside and out, but most of all a really nice human. When she meets the grouchy, hot hunk, gym owner Rick, it’s far from love at first sight. Their relationship starts out rather contentious but as he trains her to run the NYC marathon and they get to know each other a transformation takes place but not without lots of missteps and interference from some nasty media hos. I loved Cady’s response to the hate and her outstanding character and smarts shine through. I loved the grumpy, hardcore fitness trainer and hot Brit Rick. He’s got his demons but underneath he’s a standup guy and panty melting. Speaking of panty melting...the athlete turned model that is Rick’s friend Vin. He’s goofy, irreverent and hot! And then there’s Cady’s lovely friend Grace. The gals have a wonderful friendship much like Rick and Vin’s. Always supportive and there for each other. The interaction between Cady and Rick at the beginning had me in stitches and laughing so hard at Cady’s antics. The serious turn about half way that threw me a little and seemed to drag on a bit and didn’t shine the best light on my man Rick so I took off a half star much to my chagrin. It got a tad preachy at times. It got back on the right track quickly and I was laughing and tooting again at Cady’s hilarious behavior and Rick’s attempts at remaining stoic in the face of Cady and Vin’s tomfoolery. The focus on veterans was tremendous and near and dear to my heart as well as exercising/training being about health more than body image. The writing was terrific and this fast became one of my favorite rom-coms. I can’t wait for Vin and Grace’s story. This had a slow-build romance that culminated into a sexy, funny fook/food fest that had me laughing and swooning. There’s nothing like combining food with sexy times! The combination of English and American wordplay was fantastic and hilarious. I was so stoked to see the phrase ‘fair t’middlin’. It’s one of my favorite sayings inherited from my old Southern relatives and rarely if every hear it. This is my first read by these authors and I’ve already scooped up their other stories because I enjoyed this one so much and have to read more from these two fabulous authors. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Cady Callahan had a daily radio show on New York mornings. Very well resolved with her body, she has always suffered all kinds of bullying, including in the family, for being overweight. But her joy was contagious, and her quick responses managed to bring down many haters, until she met the social media celebrity Molly McKinney.
Cady attended a charity dinner for veterans. There, she was won a prize to be a member for one year of one of the most famous gyms in the city, Body Tech. Despite going up on stage smiling, she knew she wouldn't use that thing. But on returning to the table next to the gym owner, former rugby player Rick Roberts, Cady was verbally assaulted by the sociality. In an aggressive conversation, Cady accepted the challenge of a year from now, running the New York marathon, being coached by Rick himself.
To Cady's dismay, she went to the gym daily to prepare for the big challenge. The prize was not to win, but just to run, and she would use that experience to encourage other sedentary people like her, and still raise more money for veterans.
In a life full of sugar and junk, Cady would have to overcome the great obstinacy wall that was Rick.
Rick had been a great rugby player, until an accident with some surgeries took him out of the field. Plunged into depression, his marriage ended and he had no perspective on life, until he decided to make his dream come true of having a gym to help other injured athletes recover.
Body Tech has become a symbol of seriousness in its area. Becoming a member of the academy cost more than $ 10,000, and he wouldn't let his life's work become a laughing stock for that smart girl. Training Cady would be quite a challenge, but as they got together, he got to know another side of her. She was funny, affectionate, concerned with the people she loved, she didn't get attached to the guys she hang out with (she knew them through Tinder for just one night of sex) and she had great ideas. And to tell the truth, she could have a sedentary life and be considered overweight, but her curves were to drive men crazy. It was impossible for Rick not to notice all her "qualities".
While they were training, they would have to deal with a crazy stalker, defamation on the internet and a passion that came without warning. A really great funny story. 5 stars
We are in for another treat from this fabulous duo Jane and Stuart. This book is not their usual genre sports romance but is a little bit more of a rom-com.
Cady Callahan, a famous radio host in New York City is not your average woman. She is a powerhouse in every aspect, a plus-size not only in the wardrobe department but also in personality. She grew up with issues regarding her weight, but she has learned to appreciate her worth and owns it. What I like about her is her bubbly personality, self-deprecating humour and can give as good as she gets, no holds barred for this lady. I would love for her to be my best friend if only she were real. When faced with a challenge it didn’t take her long to consider it and she grabbed it with both hands. What a character!
Rick Roberts is a Brit in US soil, personal fitness trainer to the stars and a former sportsman with a short-lived career who was bamboozled into taking on Cady as a client. He wasn’t prepared to deal with a larger than life persona like her.
This might look like a light-hearted tale at first but there is a powerful message within the story. The character that stands out the most in this book is Cady who is such an inspiration. She dealt with bullying and fat-shaming, she soared high above the antagonists and let them eat her doughnut dust. This is a slow-burn romance with only one smorgasbord of a sex scene that will make you hot and bothered but dang, it is all worth it, less is more they say. Rick’s character grows on you after the first quarter of the book and he becomes more than just a sex god, you also get to know his integrity and his dedication.
The secondary characters: Vin, Rick’s best friend who is a top male model and Cady’s best friend Grace, a solicitor make an interesting pair and I bet these two would make a hilarious partnership. I hope they get to have their story, too. Cady and Rick’s romance will make you laugh and cry happy tears; they will make you feel like you can take on the world and sign on to a gym membership. I highly recommend this book.
Every now and then there is this unexpected book that finds its way into your life and has a huge impact on it. "Gym and Chocolate" is one of those books for me.
When I started to read this book, I just expected a nice rom-com and a good laugh. I knew that I loved Undefeated and Model Boyfriend by this author duo and knew that no matter what, Gym or Chocolate wouldn't be too fluffy or without substance. What I didn't expect though was how much this book would resonate with me.
First, the obvious part. You can't read this book and not love Cady! She is an amazing character, sure of herself, confident and full of life and laughter. Rick stood no chance against her no matter how much he tried to stay professional and to resist her. He was the one who stood by her and cheered her on when she tried to reach for her...okay...dream?...her nightmare?....oh, well, when she trained for a marathon. Cady, on the other hand, was the one who stood by him when he had to face stalking exes and sloppy seconds (those are never a good idea unless it's a donut...), the temptation of donuts and laughter. Cady always stays true to herself even if that means that others spurn or ridicule her. She is fat, yes, she loves donuts (among other things) and she has enough confidence that she feels alright in her own skin. The first thing everybody thinks of when they see her is how much weight she might want to lose when she is training at the gym. The loss of weight means nothing to her though but the freedom and the power that her getting fit gives her, that is something that she really enjoys. With Rick's acceptance of her and her stance on that, they make a formidable team. Together they could even be able to achieve their aim - and maybe find some love along the way. There were times when I laughed so hard that I couldn't read on because I couldn't see anything anymore. There were others when I swooned or was p...upset or... I really loved every single page of this book with its positive view of fit and fat and everything in between.

Falling for somebody who seems to be your total opposite? Gym or Chocolate? tells the funny and sometimes hilarious story of Cady and Rick, who each live in a different world when it comes to food and fitness. I love it.
Cady and Rick are very different people. Both are confident in their own skin, but they each have a different outlook on life. Cady is enjoying her life to the fullest. Yes, she knows she’s a big girl, but she has embraced her curves. And divine tasting food… And avoiding everything that’s remotely connected to exercising… Rick’s life on the other hand is all about control; a strict fitness regime and only eating healthy, nutritious food. Yes, Cady and Rick can’t be more different, but they also can’t deny they’re attracted to each other.
Like other books by this author duo, Gym or Chocolate? is a relaxed story with characters who act and talk realistically (most of the times). No flowery phrases, no internal quoting of Shakespeare, just normal people speak. Although it’s basically a simple story – opposites fall far each other but try to fight it for a while – the unfolding story holds your attention throughout the book. The story is told through Cady and Rick’s eyes, giving an insight in both thoughts and emotions. I love how they both change, but also stay true to themselves.
Gym or Chocolate? is a funny, romantic comedy. Reading the story brought a big smile on my face and caused the occasional eyeroll (in a good way!). Yes, there is a bit of needed drama (a smooth ride into the sunset would be a wee bit boring, right?), but nothing over the top or dramatic. I love Cady and Rick together; they are a perfect couple and bring out the best in each other.
I love Gym or Chocolate?, I give the story of Cady and Rick 4.5 stars.
I usually love romance novels featuring an overweight person as one of the main characters. What I don't like, is that overweight character insisting that nothing is wrong with their diet. I especially don't like them being portrayed as uncontrollable animals around donuts or other sweets.
I liked the slow burn between Cady and Rick, but that's this novel's only saving grace. Cady seemed incapable of conversing like a human being, and she could only talk in memes about being big and beautiful. It is possible to be confident in bigger than average bodies (I would know), yet I've never met a bigger woman who just word vomited this sh*t. She felt like a caricature, and it was f*cking offensive. Don't even get me started on when Rick shoves fricking 3+ donuts on his d*ck, and Cady turns into a rabid animal over it.
There were worse aspects (the two villains were also skinny b*tch caricatures), but this novel centered on Cady (who I share similarities with) and shit on those similarities
Gym or Chocolate? is a must-one-click I can’t recommend enough. Bravo Reardon and Harvey-Berrick!
I bought this book ‘Gym or chocolate’ when it came out but like so many other books that I bought, it landed on my TBR pile to read some day (being a slow reader makes that my TBR pile is sky high). But now that (the second book) ‘The world according to Vince’ is being released this month, I decided that now was a good time to read ‘Gym or chocolate’ before reading the story of Vince. And I’m so happy that I did.
‘Gym or Chocolate’ is a rom-com read and it certainly made me forget the outside world for a little bit. You got both POV’s in the story, Cady was a lovely character. She’s funny, friendly, independent, full of life and she loved to talk a lot (which made her perfect for her job). Rick was the total opposite of her, he’s silent, grumpy, a thinker and certainly not a talker! (The things that he said had me cringe now and then, he meant well but speaking was not his forte.) But he had a big and good heart. It was lovely to see their relationship go from strangers, to friends, to lovers. But be prepared, the story is a slow burn, you have to wait for the sex scene until the very end but what a sex scene! I will never look at desserts (and especially donuts) the same way!!! That’s for sure!
I didn’t mind that there weren’t much sex scenes in this story, because to be honest, I flew through the pages having so much fun that I didn’t even realized that I was almost at the end and hadn’t read a sex scene yet. From the beginning you could feel the chemistry between Cady and Rick but circumstances made that they didn’t act on it.
‘Gym or chocolate’ was co-written by Jane Harvey-Berrick and Stuart Reardon. This wasn’t the first book I read that they had written together (I have also read many books writing by Jane Harvey-Berrick alone) but still the vibe in this book felt a bit different than the previous books of them. This story was more funnier, I would almost say ‘crazier’ but I mean that in a very good way!
BUT this story was much more than just a rom-com story. These writers managed to intertwine some very sensitive and contemporary themes in between the laughter too. They did this in a very subtle and creative way and that made me love this book so much more. Cady may have a lot of curves but she totally embraced them and I loved that about her. And her answers to people who shamed her about her body were creative and very interesting. I’m really grateful that the writers didn’t change her into a skinny girl at the end of the book. No, they let her have her curves and instead lay the focus on being healthy (with or without curves) by doing fitness and exercise. They brought that message in such a positive way that even I was getting motivated by it. Tinder was also a very interesting subject this book, the good and the bad sides of it. Another theme in this book was the power and the responsibility of social media. Unfortunatey, some people misuse social media for their own purpose or to hurt people with it. Something that happens a lot nowadays, sadly. The writers really did a wonderful job of using all these difficult and sensitive subjects in the story in a funny but thoughtful way. It certainly made me think and look differently at certain things and that is the power of writing, to entertain people but to also make them think.
Two other characters we met in this story were Grace (Cady’s best friend) and Vince (Rick’s best friend), they were very wonderful secondary characters and I’m looking forward to reading their story in the next book ‘The world according to Vince’. Because Vince is one fascinating character and I really want to know how he will change Gracie’s mind about him!
This story was so much fun to read! The characters were diverse and interesting, the situation believable, and the dialogue was quick and witty. Add in some serious attraction between the leads and you've got yourself one hell of a rom com!
Rick is super serious about his business, and about life. One of things I really liked about him was the fact that he wasn't a player (outside of his former rugby days). Too often male characters run fast and lose, so to see something different on the page was so refreshing. Even before the accident that ended his career, he was in a serious/long term relationship. So nice to see an athlete who knows how to keep it in his protective cup.
And Cady was truly an every-woman character. Her struggles are struggles my fat friends have experienced. People who don't know her spewing vitriol over social media is something that has occurred to some of the nicest women I know. Why? Simply because of their size. I loved that Cady refused the scale. I loved that she continued to enjoy her food. Health is not the size 0, and I really think that came across in the story. Yes, she lost a bit of weight, but it wasn't her goal, it was simply a side effect of her new lifestyle.
I did think the situation with Rhonda simply disappeared instead of getting a proper conclusion, but the note to Molly at the end was gold! (This, however, was such a minor concern I almost feel bad for mentioning it.)
Even though this story is a slow burn kind of romance, it didn't feel that way. In fact, it felt to me like an old Cary Grant movie. The banter, the situations, the characters. The absence of sex doesn't detract from the story, in fact it only serves to build tension between the couple.
The connection between Rick and Cady was primarily intellectual at first. (Think Tracy and Hepburn.) That's not to say he only became attracted to her once she began losing weight. No, he definitely noticed her ... assets ... before then. But I think when society is conditioned to view skinny as the standard for being appealing, some people may not even realise they're attracted to fatter people at first. I think that's partly what happened with Rick. His admiration for her "take no shit" attitude, even when it went against his beliefs, was clear from the start. (It was his blushing that gave him away for the rest.)
Would I have liked a little less embarrassment for Cady at the beginning? Of course. I'm not a fan of clumsy female characters because a) aren't women humiliated enough in real life? and b) often times it gets dropped about halfway through the book. (Like somehow true love gives you better balance? I honestly don't know.) But while there were a few moments that made me wince, here they felt different. Breaking wind while exercising? Who hasn't done that. (Granted, not always in front of the sexy trainer, but still.) Losing toe nails because of the new running routine? Ouch, but it happens. Aching all over after the initial really intense workout? I seriously had trouble lifting a piece of paper once. (Aerobics with bar bells. Never again.) In this book I was reminded of the movie Desk Set wherein Katharine Hepburn's character gets drunk at the Christmas party. Funny, but not malicious.
Cady and Rick worked well together. She got him to lighten up a bit, and kept him from sliding back into depression when things went wrong for him. He got her to be a little bit more focused on her health, and grounded her when she occasionally had doubts. Like any good relationship, they didn't need the other person, but they did compliment each other when they were together. #RelationshipGoals
This book was tender, and sweet, and inspiring, and funny, and light-hearted, and fast paced, and overall just a joy to read. I hope this writing duo gives us more in this vein, as I think they really excel at this type of story telling. Highly recommend.
What a delicious and fun book to read! As with all these authors’ books, there’s an angsty element included within the funny stuff and the evolving of the characters that just filled my soul. Also, the frequent mention of lemon-glazed donuts had me constantly salivating!
Cady Callahan is overweight and she doesn’t care. She survived school and the constant bullying from other students but eventually came to a place where she accepted herself, her body, her weight and her love of food, tons and tons of carbs and sugar. When she wins a free membership to an elite gym in Manhattan with famous retired rugby player Rick Roberts, she initially treated it as a joke and meant to gift the membership to someone who would appreciate it more. Then the infamous and despicable Molly McKinney (arch nemesis in Undefeated and Model Boyfriend) shamed and insulted Cady to such an extent that she decided to take on the challenge and get (gasp!) fit.
From here on, we’re taken on a rollercoaster ride of giggles and funs, with Cady reacting to all kinds of exertion (hell, no!), rejecting any kind of diet reform that Rick sugested, subjecting Rick to several accidents of the gassy and vomit kind, plus some head knocks. During this crazy and funny ride, events occur in Rick’s life that threaten to upend the life he has striven to achieve, and Cady is the friend who understands and gives him support. An unlikely friendship develops, the guy with a drive to keep fit and the girl with the drive to keep on eating. Eventually the New York Marathon is a possibility and we’re there to share in the fun of preparation.
Rick, like the author Stuart Reardon, suffered severe injuries during his professional rugby career that caused an early retirement. After many operations, physical therapy, depression over his career loss, and divorce, his gym is his life. He’s aloof and reticent, not given to sharing and his people skills are notably absent. Yet, Cady cuts through all those shields and gets to the guy behind, big heart and mushy interior.
There are other delightful friends included in the narrative, Vin and Grace (the besties), Cady’s family who also mock her body, and some work partners who hate her because she’s fat but successful. Also, there’s a psycho stalker and hateful Molly. Really, this book is a page-turner of entertainment and heartfelt emotions. I totally loved Cady’s metamorphosis from an overweight, lazy woman into a driven, fit woman. I was initially a little upset about the gluttony and cheered Cady on her journey to a more healthy lifestyle. It’s not about being trim, it’s about being healthy and treating your body with the respect it deserves. Great job!
