Нова праця Петра Кралюка – спроба авторського дослідження контроверсійної гоголівської повісті «Тарас Бульба» з погляду ролі цього тексту в культурно-політичному дискурсі як у ХІХ столітті, у добу романтизму, так і в нинішні часи. Дослідник розглядає місце «Тараса Бульби» в різнихсистемахкоординат: імперській російській, провінційній малоросійській, польській, єврейській тощо. Висловлено сміливі припущення щодо біографії самого Гоголя. Ставиться ціла низка питань про внутрішні інтенції автора повісті; прискіпливий текстуальний аналіз подекуди наштовхує на суперечливі висновки – втім, саме в цій непрямолінійності можна добачати глибину і життє

This is a non-fic attempt to add a new facet to the (possible) hidden events in biography of Nikolai Gogol and his famous novel Taras Bulba. The English title is ‘The Secret Agent Nikolai Gogol’.

Maybe a few words for non-Ukrainian readers regarding Gogol: he in his early period actively used Ukrainian folklore and (semi-)historical information, but at the same time was active supporter (in his works) of Russian Tsars and their attempt to ‘civilize’ the Steppe. Therefore, his Taras Bulba was actively published in the Russian empire, including as a special abridged version for WW1 soldiers. For Ukrainians, both then and now there are two main views on his –positive, as a supporter of Ukrainian (Cossack) history and a negative, as a ‘sell-off’ to the empire, which destroyed Ukrainian Cossacks (btw, when you read about the late 19th century Jewish pogroms by Cassacks – these are from Don, not Ukraine).

There are two main parts – the biography of Gogol and deconstruction of his novel. In the first part the author attempts (not very convincingly) to make a case that Gogol worked for the imperial secret service (more exactly the Third Section of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery), which can be interested in Gogol after the Polish uprising in 1830, for Gogol met with quite a few political emigres from Poland on one hand and wrote (at least on a surface) vehemently anti-Polish Taras Bulba (and several other stories) on the other. While the arguments presented are definitely interesting, I still doubt that any bureaucratic agency like the Third Section, would be able to keep secret his agent identity for long.

The second part is more interesting and tries to analyze Taras Bulba, showing that it can be interpreted in many ways, including as a struggle between a barbarous freedom vs civilized limitations; intentional anachronistic inserts, a satire hidden behind bravura heroic prose.

Overall, an interesting attempt to add more colors to the seemingly well-known theme.

Гоголь дивився у вікно і про щось думав. Цілком імовірно, що він думав про те, як він зрадив Україну та ще й пішов працювати на царську охранку.
Таких аргументів, або, радше, фантазій у книзі повно. Ідея, що Гоголь був агентом "ґрунтується" на тому, що він писав у Бульбі про Волинь, а сам ніби там не був. Отже, міг бути таємно.
Дружив з поляками, хоча був ура-російський патріот. Мовляв, це втирався в довіру.
І так далі. Це все дуже непереконливо. Непрямі докази.
Щодо його нібито нещирості, коли він дуже пафосно зображує смерть козаків - всі ці "хай живе Русь" і таке інше - ідея гарна, приємна. Так ніби Микола Васильович не до кінця спаскудився і тримав дулю в кишені.
Але якщо подивитися на його Роздуми про літургію, то видно, що правдивий пафос і серйозність йому таки були властиві. В пізній період.
Я далеко не знавець Гоголя і не можу предметно сперечатися, але враження - непереконливо.
При цьому не шкодую, що прочитав - книжка цікава та сповнена фактами, не тільки фантазіями. Не Маятник Фуко, але теж така собі цікава інтелектуальна гра.
Тож варто почитати для розваги.
