De bedrijfsterrorist
Peter de Boer, financier van duistere praktijken met een al even duister verleden, schakelt in opdracht van derden bedrijven uit voor elke concurrent totdat hij zelf het slachtoffer wordt van chantage. Zakenman Marc Franken de Vires, die zich evenzeer bezighoudt met louche deals, dwingt hem via kennis over De Boers verleden om enkele zaken voor hem op te knappen. De Vires, een man die gevaarlijke connecties blijkt te onderhouden met het regime van Saddam Hussein, eist o.a. dat Peter een bekende oliemaatschappij een zware slag toebrengt. Al snel raakt ook Peters vriendin Nicky, een meisje uit een kansarm milieu, betrokken bij deze minder fraaie kant van de zakenwereld. Wanneer Peter bovendien wordt gedwongen om de feiten over de werkelijke lading van de El-Al Boeing die destijds in de Bijlmer neerstortte te achterhalen, raken hij en Nicky nog verder verwikkeld in en internationaal complot en is het nog maar de vraag of zij hier heelhuids uit kunnen komen...

Generally a good thriller, but ...
Too many themes, even if they are there to provide "deep background".
We are introduced to racial issues, various degrees of family secrets, domestic violence, drug and prostitution issues in Amsterdam and a lot more.
All boiled down to a hardened businessman offering expensive consultancy services if you are in need af a hostile take over of your closest competitor; meet Peter de Boer.
Naturally such work need a dark background, and it would be hard to find a darker one.
As the plot(s) unfolds, enter Nicky, the beautiful, and intelligent Indonesian girl with serious family issues, who will eventually save the day and run away with the prince.
I´m not trying to spoil the reading experience to anyone, that obvious is it where that part of the story is moving.
A cousin and an aunt, a some-time mistress and a few not too trusty employees.
The ones that have been mutilated by the tough business methods play there part too, not to mention the Iraqi intelligence freelancers.
Ooh, CIA is there too.
The novel draws on the circumstances of The Bijlmermeer Crash of October 4th 1992, which even today are well hidden from prying public eyes.
This part of the plot is not entirely unlikely, and it could from my point of view have been utilized to much better effect had some of the 600 pages been set aside for it.
We are provided with unnecessary details and sideplots in order to keep the story going on.
My overall conclusion, the author works too hard on making every tiny bit of the story plausible, and make a happy ending.

Complicated, hard to follow (on audiobook) and not all too exciting. Rather disappointed as I usually like Jussi Adler-Olsen's books. Also happened to be a subject I wasn't all too interested in, so that might have affected my rating though.
There were a lot of traps the author could have fallen into, as in getting too technical or listing the numbers too much, but he refrained from that, so good job by the author, but not a book for me.

Leider konnte mich dieser Thriller nicht überzeugen. Das lag daran, dass mich die zugrundeliegende Thematik (andere Unternehmen auf legalen, aber durchaus unmoralischen Wegen zu ruinieren), mich nicht so wirklich fesseln konnte und es auch keinen richtigen Sympathieträger unter den Charakteren gab. Auch bei weiteren Verstrickungen hatte ich Verständnisprobleme, ich weiß aber nicht, ob es tatsächlich nicht gut ausgeführt war oder ob ich zwischendurch überflogen habe, weil ich es dann auch grundsätzlich nicht so spannend fand. Schade.

Hvad skal jeg sige? De bøger jeg har læst af JAO kan klart deles op i Afdeling Q og så de andre. De andre, tidligere bøger er ikke lige mig, Hun takkede guderne er borderline 2/5 men jeg gav den 3/5 fordi jeg er for flink...

Rörig och svår att hänga med i (lyssnade som ljudbok). Var väldigt nära att att ge upp boken men lyssnade färdigt på den ändå.

En helt vansinnig historia, stundtals både underhållande och spännande, men den kunde absolut varit kortare.

Ein facettenreicher Roman, der nach meinem Geschmack sehr gute Seiten hat, aber dann auch wieder langweilige bis unpassende Momente in sich birgt.
Interessant ist zweifelsohne das Metier von Peter de Boer, der in Amsterdam eine Firma betreibt, die andere Firmen zerschlägt und im Auftrag ihrer Konkurrenten (auf legale Weise) aus dem Weg räumt. Auch das Migrantenmilieu von Nicky Landsaat, die aus einer niederländisch-indonesischen, total kaputten Familie stammt und sich trotzdem mit Bestnoten an der Uni durchbeißt, ist soweit ganz interessant. Und dass alle Bösen im Grunde genommen Opfer und in der Hand von anderen Bösen sind, ist auch ganz gelungen. Geheimdienste (Irak, Israel, CIA) runden das ganze noch ab. Ein Blick auf die niederländische Geschichte in Sachen Terrorismus, Luftfahrtkatastrophen und Ende der Kolonialzeit war auch ganz okay.
Doch da ist auch die andere Seite. Die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Peter und Nicky fand ich völlig überflüssig, auch Peters verworrene Familiengeschichte und seine früheren Frauengeschichten. Alles Ballast, der einen temporeichen Thriller nur ausbremst.
Weniger wäre mehr gewesen, aber schlecht ist das Buch dann doch nicht, nur nicht so gut wie es hätte sein können.

Wat een tegenvaller, dit boek. Had de Q-serie gelezen en was daar heel enthousiast over, dus dan kan een ander boek van dezelfde schrijver toch niet tegenvallen? Nou, dat kan dus wel.
Het verhaal speelt zich voornamelijk af in Nederland, maar echt alles wordt er bijgehaald. Indonesië, met de ‘dukun’ (waardoor ik al afhaakte), Amsterdam, Syrië, Irak, Koerden, CIA, een meisje dat in een slechte omgeving is opgegroeid, een keiharde zakenman die zijn bedrijf bijna kwijtraakt door rancuneuze werknemers, een romance, een onwaarschijnlijk avontuur, en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan. Het houdt maar niet op. Het is warrig en slecht te volgen.
Niet bepaald een aanrader.

The characters in this one were WEIRD. Coming to think of it, Adler-Olsen's characters are always weird, but that works really well in crime novels and I am not so sure it works as well in this... economic thriller?
It was a very interesting experience to read a Danish book set in the Netherlands and I was flabbergasted how I managed to live in the Netherlands for five years without once hearing about the plane crash at Bijlmermeer. So all in all, a very interesting experience but not what I am used to from Jussi Adler-Olsen.

This book was written early in the authors career, and it is obvious that he still had not learned the style that later came to define his style of writing.
I think the book was atleast 200 of the 600 pages too long. He spent a lot of time in descriptions that did not do anything good for the story.
The story itself is not that interesting, and the setting was not engaging for me. I did not really care for the characters or the story, so I just found the story boring and long.
I can recommend the later books in the serie about Department Q, but I can not recommend this book.

Efter en något seg inledning tog berättelsen fart, sedan blev den riktigt skrämmande. Jussi Adler Olsen är en mästare på att bygga upp spänningen så att det inte går att sluta läsa. Denna bok är inget undantag. Även om den var lång 23 timmar och 26 minuter, var den inte det minsta långtråkig. Jag bara undrade hur huvudpersonerna skulle klara att hålla sig vid liv så lång tid.
En riktig mästarförfattare, som inte behöver frossa i blod och lik för att trollbinda läsaren. Läs boken!

Adler-Olsenin Q-sarja on lempilukemistoani, mutta tämä aikaisempaa tuotantoaan oleva tiiliskivi oli minulle jotenkin liikaa. Liikaa sivuja, liikaa hahmoja, liikaa juonenkäänteitä. Vaikka juoni oli sinänsä toimiva, voimavarat eivät riittäneet keskittymään 745 sivuun, vaan ohitin loppuosaa harppomistekniikalla. Tämän kirjan luokittelen mielessäni itselleni "liian äijämäisiin" dekkareihin, vaikka monentyyppisistä dekkareista pidänkin.

Insgesamt ein guter Thriller, allerdings etwas lang und es werden sehr viele Themen miteinander verwoben.
Spannend sind die Einblicke in die Niederländische Kolonialzeit und den Amsterdamer Untergrund schon, aber verbunden mit Krieg im Nahen Osten und verschollenen Waffen aus israelischen Armee Beständen wirkt es etwas konstruiert.
Trotzdem war spannend in die Welt einzutauchen und sich in die Zeit zurück zu versetzen.

September 8, 2019A really good story, though at times complex and with many facets. Partly built around a true story, a ghastly one. Although the book is quite a brick, it didn't take long to read, as it was quite gripping. I thought Jussi's language was a bit different to his normal style, but I soon got used to it. I definitely recommend.

Manch eine Rezension hker bemängelt die Vielzahl der Hintergrundgeschichten in diesem Roman. Mich hat das gar nicht gestört., im Gegenteil. Einzig im Finale verliert die Geschichte etwas unnötig an Tempo, wegen Adler-Olsens Bedürfnis alles noch schlüssig zu erklären.
Von mir gibts deshalb gute 4 Sterne.

Jeg kunne godt lide bogen, og følge med i selve Nicky Landsaat historie og liv, mens jeg ikke så godt kunne lide at følge Peter de Boers liv, da jeg synes at der manglede en forklaring på hvorfor han prøver at knuse virksomheder på bestilling. Det er godt nok et hårdt liv, som Nicky har med hendes familie, og når hun skal hjælpe Peter med at komme ud af hans knippe.
Så jeg har valgt at give bogen 3 ud af 5 stjerner.

Hat mich überhaupt nicht gepackt. Schon zu Beginn wollte ich es abbrechen, habe mich dann aber doch durchgekämpft.
Eigentlich ist der Hintergrund der Story vielversprechend, aber irgendwie versandet alles.
Kein Vergleich mit den anderen Büchern, die ich von diesem Autor schon gelesen habe.

Ich mag Jussi Adler Olsen's Bücher,aber hier hat er es etwas zu Gut gemeint! Zu viele Themen um jedes einzelne gut ausarbeiten zu können!!! Gelangweilt hab ich mich nicht,aber hier wäre weniger mit Sicherheit mehr gewesen!

Gillade böckerna om avdelning Q som Jussi har skrivit. Men denna föll mig inte riktigt i smaken. Lite för otroliga historier, men gick ändå inte att sluta läsa. Svårt att sluta en bok mitt i, man borde bli bättre på det.

Den börjar lite segt men sen får man kläm på hur den är uppbyggd och då vill man inte släppa den. De innehåller allt: spänning, politik, kärlek, humor. Ge den lite tid som sagt, inte omedelbar.
