A strong story about characters learning to see themselves as God sees them - not inferior or superior. Very impressive way of handling the issue!

“Like an alcoholic, I’m in recovery, one day at a time, still fully capable of using supposedly spiritual activities to serve myself instead of serving others. I’ve engaged in Christian service addictively for the same reason people use substances addictively: because I felt spiritually hungry and didn’t understand how to satisfy that hunger. Yes, even as a minister.” "Chappie was saying, “What I learned – not easily, I might add – is that true service isn’t about our needs. It’s about our gifts. It’s about relationship, about connection at the deepest levels. It acknowledges both our own and others’ intrinsic worth. True service doesn’t place us beneath others, servants with no rights of our own; nor does it place us above others, kings casting bread to the peasants below. True service equalizes. It recognizes what we get back from our giving. If was are to be free to serve, we can’t deny the feelings of unworthiness that force us into the role of ‘rugged individualist’ or make us doormats or drive us to addiction. What we must do is put those feelings in proper perspective. Instead of hiding our feelings of unworthiness and trying to escape their pain, we must learn to deal with them instead. We may be only humble jars of clay but we are jars of clay that hold ‘the light of the knowledge of the glory of God.’ In our hearts we hold the treasure of God’s glory and power. And because we have this all-surpassing power in residence in our hearts, we can say with the apostle Paul, ‘we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed.” Though we are poor in spirit, no, because we are poor in spirit – we have all the riches of God dwelling in us.”

I can not say enough good things about this book. I liked it and I learned a lot about myself while reading it. The story is about Toni who is a reformed alcoholic and drug abuser. She has been clean for 2 years and has a son who was affected from her abuse. Not only is the book about her but also about every day people like me who have never drank or used drugs yet are addicts. The addiction may be "my time", it could have to do with finance, or it could be any number of things that we put as priorities. Yes, it is a love story but that is not the primary story.

3.5 stars. It took awhile to get into at first. I felt like I was being told yhe story instead of seeing it unfold along with the characters. The topics were difficult, and the author did a good job tackling them.

Extremely well written and heart warming. This is the first book I've read by Barbara Jean Hicks and I will definitely look for more of her books after reading Snow Swan.
