This is a book I’ll definitely have to reread to absorb everything. It was a slower read for me, but everything was quite fascinating. I enjoyed learning about the various heresies that also popped up as the years went by.
A series of largely biographical vignettes from the early Church fathers through the beginning of the Reformation. The author puts a distinctively Protestant spin on the histories - particularly as it pertains to the popes and the practices of the Roman Catholic Church. You get a good introduction to dozens of people and a feel for how the Church developed in its first 1500 years.
I've been looking for a comprehensive history of the Christian church for quite some time. After browsing through half a dozen large tomes from the library with no success, I came across this FREE Kindle book by chance. It was exactly what I was looking for: short, simple chapters about the apostles, martyrs, patriarchs, monks, popes, etc. up to the Reformation (frankly I wish it had gone on past the Reformation but there are other books for that). This must have been a textbook written for young people, it is that simple but concise, introducing terms and figures from history. Robertson walks us through how the church spread from Jerusalem to Greece, Rome and Europe, how the Eastern and Western churches split because of politics and the rise of Islam. Then he explains how the church of Rome gained power and wealth, and the effects of the power struggles that resulted.
I liked this book because the Author was honest concerning both the Catholics and Protestants. And yet at the same time He was gentle with the criticism and rebuke. You just don't such displays of honesty and gentleness in modern Pastors much any more! No one gets 'sugar coated' in this book, but he isn't afraid to praise good actions either. The writing style is easy to understand considering when it was written. Keep in mind that these are only brief sketches and not full accounts. This book is great for some one who lacks time to read.
I was looking for an easy blueprint to early church history and honestly this was perfect. It did a great job at outlining the events that created the early church and molded it
