Born in occupied France during WWII and brought up in Hawaii; Bernard Lau was one of the first non-Japanese practitioners of aikido. After a long stint in the navy as a submariner and diver, Lau joined the Seattle police department and eventually wound up as an undercover narcotics agent. This is the story of the off-beat and action-filled life that he had planned for himself at the age of 16, a life that didn't always go according to plan.
Don't remember how I came across this book, but given the topic, I felt compelled to read it and see how much I recognized. I know the area well....I recognize locations and even some of the people named - some of the names were changed, others are real.
I was surprised that addresses were explicit, not that there are a lot of people that have read this book and even fewer who would go and look for these places.
It's the guy's memoirs....It reads as choppy anecdotes, but it does appear to be chronological.
I couldn't help but think that I wouldn't want my kid and my kid's friends reading this.
I'll pass this on to a friend who also knows the area and the people....
