Sarah, a single mother with an adolescent daughter, Jasmine, struggles with the conflicts from her own dysfunctional family which causes her to behave in infuriating ways with those she loves. A highly successful corporate lawyer who spends her days in a Toronto office tower surrounded by her peers she has trouble relating to others. Sarah has started to feel the tension from the needs of her daughter who is on the verge of becoming an adult and is seeking more independence. In the meantime, her mother is aging and in failing health needing her more and more for support. Sarah has begun to reminisce about having someone of her own, a male partner. Since most of her time is spent at the law firm, she checks out the available lawyers and chooses Curtis. He is thrilled with the sudden interest Sarah is giving him and they begin a relationship.
The two of them begin to date and all goes well until he takes a leave of absence from his firm to try out a new career in politics. Sarah has unhappy memories about her Grandmother Elaine's political career and contemplates dumping her new partner. She discovers that relationships can be as difficult and draining as her negotiations with merger partners at the law firm. What made her think these changes in her life would be easy? Was it time for her to retreat back into her own little nest?
Karen Gansel – A graduate of the University of Toronto, Karen had a nineteen-year career with the Ontario Ministry of Health as a senior manager. This included leading two Ministry joint teams with the Ontario Medical Association and the Ontario Hospital Association. Prior to that, she was a senior manager of the Assistive Devices Program from 2001–2005, working with a broad range of community stakeholders, health professionals, and a staff of 50.
Following her retirement in 2009, Karen began writing fiction novels. A member of the Canadian Authors Association since 2009, Karen was president of the Niagara branch for six years and on the Board of Directors from 2017 to current.
