The Paris Library By Janet Skeslien Charles, The Keeper of Stories By Sally Page 2 Books Collection
The Paris An instant New York Times, Washington Post, and USA TODAY bestseller—based on the true story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris during World War II—The Paris Library is a moving and unforgettable “ode to the importance of libraries, books, and the human connections we find within both” (Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author).
The Keeper of She can't recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her.
I'm the author of MISS MORGAN'S BOOK BRIGADE (THE LIBRARIANS OF RUE DE PICARDIE in the UK).
What you can expect from the story: -A celebration strong women breaking down barriers and leaving their mark on history -Lifelong friendships -A wise dog named Max🐕 -History brought to life -A return to the bodacious 1980s -The comfort of books📚 -A trip to Paris -Characters that feel like friends -A headstrong French girl who will win your heart
While researching THE PARIS LIBRARY, I discovered another incredible librarian who travelled to France on her own. Like the directress Dorothy Reeder, my new heroine Jessie Carson believes in books as bridges.
Set in World War I France, Jessie prefers working in a war zone to life with her boss back home. The only way she can visit the City of Light is if she can find a job to pay her passage. The American Committee for Devastated France, an aid group that cares for civilians, hires her, and she is on her way.
In northern France, Jessie turns ambulances into bookmobiles and trains the first French female librarians. Then she disappears. I was dying to know what happened to her. The story had plenty of twists and turns, leading me to The Morgan Library and Museum, the New York Public Library, and the Franco-American Museum in France. I hope you’ll enjoy tracking down this elusive librarian as much as I did.
Synopsis: Cleaner Janice collects stories. In the homes of others, intertwined in their lives like a fly on the wall, Janice allows each client one story. Life at home for Janice is nothing to tell a story about, her husband Mark is an ignorant man. He is a man of a thousand jobs, whilst disregarding Janice as ‘just a cleaner’. Janice has her own story, but no one to hear it. That is until Mrs B, an eclectic old academic is looking for a cleaner…
My review: This is just one of those easy books that makes you smile. It touches on some quite heavy topics (grief, estranged families, neglect, alcoholism etc.) but does so in a delicate manner, in which you can identify its presence in a real life story, without it being the primary focus and catalyst for all events. I would recommend as a quick, easy read.
Being a lifelong book reader, I truly did enjoy this book. It isn't meant to be a monumental read; it's a bit slow. The characters could have been expounded upon a bit better. The history behind the story makes it a good read.
