RIVERLAND-

Riverland follows the journey of Ted, a failed medical student from New York City, and his father John, a alcoholic gold miner from Washington State, to Laos, a small country along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Even in 1994, with the Vietnam war long over, groups of Hmong people who had fought alongside U.S. troops are still persecuted by the communist government. Ted is trying to salve his soul after a deadly mistake in medical school by volunteering at a health clinic helping the Hmong, while his father oversees a government run gold mine. Ted soon discovers his father is living just upriver from him, killing the people he has grown to love, and he travels through the wilds of eastern Laos to his father's mining camp to confront his past and face his future.

Riverland is a story about loss, betrayal, hope, love, and self-healing.

Seems like a self published book that could have had more editing. I liked the story and description of Laos from back when it was first opened and hints of how it has become today.
