For the Cultivation of the Mind: The Story of an Imaginary Grand Tour

Rate this book
It is in Europe during the 1700 and 1800s, distinguished by innovative frenzy and revolutionary shockwaves, that the phenomenon of the Grand Tour spread unstoppably. An educational journey, an experience that goes beyond the mere purpose of educating the young offspring of good families, but rather takes on the clear contours of a personal journey with almost cathartic traits.
The mouvement, as a prerogative was essentially reserved for men, however, there were also some significant female presences.
Paradoxically, it will be a woman, who is not a traveller, that will accompany us on the many legs of an intense European tour filled with suggestion. Recounted in a travel diary that takes on the form of a historical novel tout court. Adventure and some vicissitudes, played out against the backdrop of Europe during those crucial years. It details social and historical outlines and sometimes even those of a political nature. A literary experiment, by Priscilla Wakefield, guided by those that actually saw places, met people, had life experiences and then recounted them.
