Essential for German language learning and teaching (detailing 501 of the most common German verbs and their various, varying meticulously conjugated forms), Henry Strutz' 501 German Verbs is another study reference I have often and always strongly recommended to my first year novice and elementary language students (and actually, ALL German language students should very much and seriously consider 501 German Verbs). And although this tome, of course, does not and should never replace regular class attendance and working with and through the textbooks and accompanying workbooks used and assigned in college and university German language courses, 501 German Verbs is a marvellous, wonderful and useful adjunct, a versatile and intensely satisfying verb learning and mastery tool. While available in multiple editions since 1982, I would now ONLY consider those editions published post the orthographical reform of 2000, and with 501 German Verbs in particular, this here 2008 paperback edition definitely seems superior, as it not only also lists common idioms, and has a basic grammar review, it even comes with an additional CD-Rom of exercises and activities (however and that being said, in November 2016, a brand new paperback edition was released and it is my personal experience and opinion that especially with language learning and teaching manuals and textbooks, the most recent edition is usually or at least more often than not also the most up-to-date, the most advanced and detailed, read the most universally useful and worthwhile).

Herkunft: eigentlich = sich entfernen, um zu pissen

Gebrauch: salopp

Grammatik (sich verpissen):
ich verpisse mich / du verpisst dich / er,sie,es verpisst sich / wir verpissen uns / ihr verpisst euch / sie verpissen sich

Imperativ: verpiss dich! (mach, dass du wegkommst!)

Seen here is another commonly used verb, sprayed multiple times upon a wall and possibly referring to the person walking in front. This verb, which is also used in German nowadays, essentially has the same meaning as the verpissen above.

Like Cassell's German-English Dictionary , this is another purchase from my freshman year of high school that has stood the test of time. I won't pretend that I reference 501 German Verbs as often as I might, but I find it comforting to know that it sits on my shelf, close at hand when I need to look up a particular verb. Recommended to students learning German.

This is a very useful book, especially as you reach that "middle" level of ability in which you need a wide vocabulary, but haven't memorized the many details of the German language. There are parts that will be useful to anyone, however, from the German pronunciation guide at the beginning, to the verb tests with answers at the back. Is it fun to read? Of course not, it's a tool, not a game.

This is an excellent reference and as a side benefit, it helps with an understanding of English with the tenses and moods in German and English equivalents. It is written in a form that you can recite the tenses in your mind before speaking.
