Let's Stop Teaching and Start Designing Learning

Rate this book
How can you shift from a focus on content to the creation of active learning experiences? In this practical resource, author Jason Kennedy provides a blueprint to help you stop "teaching" and start designing learning, so you can improve students' critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and collaboration with others, preparing them for their futures beyond school doors.
This is a resource for new teachers needing a place to start, veterans wanting to reimagine the practice, and administrators desiring to become instructional leaders. The framework for learning design covers components of planning (learning targets), of instruction (the opening, learning task, skills, tools, and success criteria), and of the work session (choices, pathways, feedback, and assessment). Appropriate for teachers of any subject area, the book also offers wide variety of tools to help you implement the ideas in your own setting.
There is no better time than now to reimagine what teaching is into what it should be, learning.
Learning IS the job. Design for it to happen intentionally.

This is a good primer and review of solid instructional practice and pedagogy. Nothing “new” necessarily but lots of good questions for reflection to help teachers be intentionally designing the learning they want to happen. I enjoyed reading this book with some of my staff!

Lots of notes and highlights that confirmed, challenged, and changed my thinking around the role of educators as teachers versus design engineers. Some good stuff here I will be using.

This would be fine for new teachers or maybe teachers who are stuck in "old school" ways, but I didn't find anything new in here. It's about the workshop model and building relationships with kids.
