Book #4 in The Thornheart Trials. This is the dark and twisty love story between Magnolia and her broody crow shifter familiar, Bram. Blurb coming soon.
Sherilee Gray is a kiwi girl and lives in beautiful New Zealand with her husband and their two children. When she isn't writing sexy contemporary and paranormal romance, searching for her next alpha hero on Pinterest, or fueling her voracious book addiction, she can be found dreaming of far off places with a mug of tea in one hand and a bar of chocolate in the other.
An Oath at Midnight is the fourth book in The Thornheart Trials series by Sherilee Gray. I have loved these Thornheart sisters since the first book and now it’s Magnolia’s turn. And of course, Bram’s.
Magnolia Thornheart is twenty one years old and is one of the four witch sisters of the Thornheart clan. One by one, Magnolia has watched her sisters find their mates and also be called by “The Mother” to complete their task in order for their family to retain their powers. But after what happened two years ago when Magnolia’s choices threatened the lives of her entire family, she has given up any hope of finding love herself. She is scarred both physically on the outside and emotionally on the inside.
Six years ago, Magnolia met her familiar, Bram, a crow shifter. They have been inseparable ever since. But lately, things have been strained between them. Bram disappears for days at a time and he won’t say where he goes. They’ve never had secrets between them before.
People within their circle have been turning up brutally murdered. And at the same time, Mags is called by the mother to begin her trial. With Bram absent so much, will he even be around to help her? With the future of her family at stake, Magnolia has no choice, she must complete her task. With or without Bram.
“Only the strongest can walk the path between dark and light.”
Of course Sherilee grabs us right from the start and doesn’t let go until the very end. Magnolia and Bram are battered and bruised both physically and emotionally non-stop. It seems as if they are never going to get their happy ever after. I also want to add that I loved Asher, who has turned out to be a wonderful friend to Magnolia. I feel so bad for the life she was dealt and would love to see her get a happy ever after. To get a second chance to find love again. I’ve probably said this before when reviewing past books in this series but buckle up for this one, because it’s a wild and crazy ride.
This was intense! I’ve been waiting for Bram and Magnolia’s story since the beginning and holy heck, it was everything and more than I could have imagined! With Magnolia’s past a very present issue to this couple being able to move forward, and Bram keeping a part of himself from her, they already had a struggle to ever move from friends to something more. But when Magnolia’s trial begins, things really pick up and she is thrown into an extremely dark place. Watching them rise to the challenges even as their feelings are slowly given freedom, had me turning the pages faster. Add in the horror they faced separately and together and I couldn’t stop reading this. This is filled with twists and turns, and so many shocking moments I found myself literally gasping out loud. I was totally lost in this dark and magical world.
Outstanding doesn’t seem adequate when describing this story. Again, Ms. Gray’s storytelling talent has blown my mind.
In the previous books in this series, I was intrigued by Bram and couldn’t wait to know him better. And I was very eager to learn his and Magnolia’s story.
Bram is Magnolia’s familiar, they’ve been best friends since the moment they met. Since the first time he stepped in to protect her. Mags knew immediately he was her familiar. But what she didn’t know, was that he’d be pining for her for…well, forever.
Seeing the protectiveness and loyalty and love that Bram has for Mags is a beautiful thing. It was breathtaking and heart-squeezing and put flutters-in-my-tummy when Bram would look at her, care for her, even just simply talk to her. I could feel the love. His willingness to accept what she was (and wasn’t) ready to give made him all the more sexy to me. He chose to stay. He chose to give and not to take.
This book was full of all sorts of goodness. It entertained me in all the ways and made me never want to put it down. I was gripping my kindle tightly quite often, from the intensity of the action and suspense.
This was yet another amazing story in this extraordinary series. I enjoyed seeing the characters from the previous books, I loved getting to know Mags & Bram so much better, and I really loved the set-up for the next book! Can’t. Wait. What a tease!
What a freaking fantastic way to end the Thornheart series! The action, the passion, the pain and surprises, it was everything I wanted and more! Bram and Magnolia's story is an epic adventure with twists and turns and soul deep love.
I freaking adore Bram! I loved getting to know all of him, from the quiet man in the shadows to the possessive alpha pining for his mate. Mags is incredibly strong and so fierce. She has a darkness inside that we finally get to see and the journey to learn how to control it. Their darkness calls out to each other. Her trail comes early and we get to see just how powerful she is. There's so much tension between them while Mags and Bram try to repair their relationship and continue to grow. When she finally figures out that Bram is her mate, something he's always known, she let's fear hold her back from him. But she more than makes up for it and that chapter is intense! Ah! These two own my heart!
Magnolia and Bram go through so much, both together and separately. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil anything, but you need to read this series! The way the sisters come together at the end, chef's kiss! I can't wait for more from this world!
Unfortunately I didn’t find this book as entertaining as the previous book with Rose. I think my biggest issue was with Magnolia (h). She was impulsive, a bit self centered and somewhat immature.
Mags and Bram, finally!! The tension was palpable between these two from the first book and I was so curious as to how they would find their happily ever after. And boy…it took a lot for them to finally be able to be together! Both had to suffer so much, but it made it all worth it in the end. I really enjoyed reading the Thornheart sister’s stories (the first one still being my favorite)! Ren and Jasmine’s story is next but I’m not sure I want to read that one as Ren is being a giant manwhore and Jasmine has to witness him with a lot of OW. That just doesn’t scream ‘romance’ to me….
Safety: - No OW (but some jealousy) -OM: h kisses OM to try and get over a trauma (of someone forcing a kiss on her in the past). She almost throws up afterward. H finds out and is very jealous. Threatens OM. - no cheating (both virgins) - No separation / no third act break up
Six years later, Magnolia is struggling with a past trauma, anger and her inner darkness, and Bram’s frequent disappearances. With all of this, she also gets called to start her magical trial by The Mother. In order to keep her powers and the magic in her family coven, she must pass her task and a combat trial.
Bram is also struggling with this new “job” he has taken but much of the details are hidden. You get little tidbits that Bram has become something dangerous. He is a crow - he already has an innate darkness but now he is embracing it. I really like the similarities Bram and Mags are experiencing with their own inner darkness.
Bram is a top tier MMC - alpha, possessive, jealous and Mags is his whole world.
Bram knows what she is to him but she is blind to it. Chapter 19 is AMAZING. I don’t want to give away much - just know that Mags is a badass! She proves herself in the way of the crow. 🖤
Their relationship is a slow burn due to Magnolia’s past trauma. The build up is 🔥 and both of them are virgins. There is plenty of spice to keep you entertained though. Sherilee Gray writes the hottest scenes ever 😮💨
Overall, this is a great read! I love the Thornhearts and this may have been one of my favorites in the series.
Eeeeeeeee….Sherilee Gray did not disappoint!!! Finally getting to hear the perspective from Bram’s POV!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 I love how she wrapped up the series for the Thornheart Trials all while giving Magnolia her own amazing and creative storyline that just added to the adventure more. We finally get answers to things from the previous books and get the closure we all needed! Reading it is a MUST!!! Just wish I could have slowed myself down more then the 2 days I took to blow through it!!! So thankful to get an ARC…and can not wait for the next adventure Sherilee takes us on!!! Mags and Bram….ugh it was to to to good!!!
Listennn! This was damn near perfect. 4.5/4.6 stars.
If they had gotten together just a little sooner and had 1 more sex scene? It would’ve been perfection.
This had one of my fav things ever…the woman having to chase a little. God knows if you turn down a man enough times he’s going to feel rejected. Thank God Mags got her shit together…I was starting to feel she didn’t deserve Bram.
This was sooo good. The author surprised me with the release because I didn’t see it on goodreads.
I’m really hoping Zinnia is left and the Crow brothers. I need a book for them!!
The next book in the Thornheart Trials is here and it’s absolutely amazing❣️
After reading Rose and Ronan’s story, I was excited to see what was in store for Brams and Mags especially due to their relationship as witch and familiar🙃 And I was NOT disappointed, it was fantastic🤩 I was taken on an adventure that was both emotional and exciting but also I got to find out more about Bram and his family as well as learn who Mags was and what shaped her…plus a few unexpected surprises😳
A wonderful read but would definitely recommend reading the first three books before this one as the story arc builds on the previous story events. I received an advanced copy and willingly leave my honest review❤️
Amazing yet again! I've waited a year to read book 4 and 2 days to read it. I couldn't put it down. I loved this series and I'm looking forward to the next series. Brilliant again Sherilee Gray
I read the parts where Bram and Magnolia were in the previous books and that makes it better for me. I like Bram so much. I just wish they didn’t spend most of the books being unable to touch for one reason or another. I wanted to see them enjoy their relationship more.
3.75 9/11/25
I wish she described the way the characters looked a bit more detailed. There is description but it feels too general, like “tall” and “short”. This is based on other books as well.
Something else I noticed in multiple books of hers is that the fmc always has a touching problem, like every single one. Something different would be nice.
An Oath at Midnight is the last installment of the The Thornheart Trials by Sherilee Gray. The FMC Magnolia and MMC Bram had their story develop faintly in the background since the series' first book. But you can definitely read this as a standalone.
The story's premise is that it's finally Magnolia's time to complete her trial with their "Mother" who gave their bloodline their witch abilities. Each sister had to pass their trial in order for everyone in the family to keep their powers. Now, it's Mag's turn.
The aspect of this story that captivated me the most was the dynamic between Magnolia and Bram. They are the classic best friends-to-lovers trope and I have always enjoyed this dynamic. It's filled with so much insecurity, doubt, and fear of ruining a relationship that is fragile yet dependent on them to breathe. There's so much angst-filled in the first half of the book, it tears your heart to shreds, especially the chapters with MMC's POV. And I loved all of it!!
I mean come on, he said, He's so precious!
It's quite established that Bram loved Magnolia all his life, and Magnolia never realizes it. This story is about Magnolia healing from her past trauma and realizing what was in front of her all along. And that maybe, she loved him since the beginning too.
In terms of the supernatural story that plays out across the novel, Magnolia is forced to find out who has been murdering a bunch of people within the coven and clear her sister's name whose accused of murder. I loved that Sherilee Gray twisted the storyline from the previous books in the series and made it more of a whodunit situation.
Overall, it's a great book. I recommend reading it. The only reason it's 4.5/5 for me is that I wasn't as captivated by the supernatural aspect that took over the last quarter of the book. I understand the structural component where Sherilee Gray had to wrap up everything in the series finale. It's just that the love story between the two main characters was the strongest part of the book for me, which got overshadowed since she had to tie everything together. Either way, bravo! Definitely a binge read for sure!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
THIS BOOK! The friends-to-lovers angst. The pining. The fated mates deliciousness! 5 Stars!
Magnolia Thornheart is a mess. Two and a half years ago (during the events of book 1), she made a very bad decision, and she's been paying for it ever since, in a variety of ways. She was also attacked with magic back then, and carries scars both physical and emotional. She wouldn't have made it through if it weren't for her best friend and familiar, Bram.
Bram is a crow shifter, and Mags' familiar. They found each other as teens, and have been inseparable ever since. But what Bram realized from the moment they met, that Magnolia has never seemed to get, is that they are also fated mates. Bram loves Mags and he would do anything for her, including living his life just close enough to her to never be truly complete.
Mags and Bram's story was a long time coming, and wow was the payoff worth it!! The secrets, the pining, the jealousy, the realizations, the slow burn, and the MAGIC. This book was so great. Bram and Mags had chemistry like whoa, even when Mags tried to write it off as something else. The poor thing was so oblivious to her own feelings, and she was breaking both their hearts in the process.
Getting peeks at the rest of Coven Thornheart was a delight, as always, and Mags' trial had a lot to do with her oldest sister Willow. Willow's presence was felt, though she wasn't on page that much. I enjoyed revisiting all of them. Bram's brothers were VERY interesting, and learning his secrets along the way was fascinating. I've never read a crow shifter before, so this story was quite unique for me.
I can't recommend this series highly enough! And that sneak peek at who's next in the epilogue?! BRING IT ON!!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. This review is my personal opinion, voluntarily given. Reviewed by Megan from Romanced by the Book
I've really enjoyed each book in this series. One; for their similar themes of completing a trial that was issued by the mother. Each trail has been unique to each witch, while also having some similarities, but really aside from each sister undergoing a trial they have all been a fantastically unique experience. Two; each sister found their love during their trial and I loved how Sherilee basically matched each sisters skill, not sure that's the best word but I'm sticking with it, to their mate. It was not only a wonderful twist in every book, but really hit home how perfectly matched they all were for their soul mates.
In this newest book, I kept wondering how she was going to pull it off, especially as each obstacle was thrown at the couple, it seemed insurmountable to achieve, but by the end of the book I loved how it all came together and was thrilled at the outcome for this newest couple.
Bram and Mags have been together since book one. Bram is her familiar so they already have a bond. Best friends and a connection that people outside of the witch community didn't understand. Bram's family is one of them. However, just because Bram is her familiar didn't mean true love, which is why it takes Mags a little longer to catch on to why Bram is uber possessive. Mags has also had some past trauma and she’s running scared from every kind of feeling.
Bram knows Mags is his mate and he will never leave her side, but his family is also calling upon him more and more. He's constantly torn and hates when he's not there for her. He wants Mags in every way possible, his crow wants to claim her, but he will also wait a lifetime until she's ready. The strength of his patience...damn is all I can say.
This book is a super slow burn, friends to lovers romance, with a lot of action, mystery, and great paranormal world building. I loved it.
I can’t believe this was the last sister. I wasn’t fan of Mags, she was sweet and shy when we first met her and little by little she became someone else. And I’m glad I didn’t skip her book. We learned so much what we didn’t see before. The horror she carried in her and all the shit she went through. I think she changed the most in the series, she went through so much and she suffered greatly for 2,5 years.
I would say, romance was a little bit, few steps behind the storyline. Storyline was insane and full of twists I would have not even imagined it going to that direction. She truly came into herself and found an outlet for her anger.
Bram was always there and at first I was so angry at Mags for not seeing who he was to her. I truly wanted to throttle her but we will learn that she wasn’t like this randomly.
Damn the author for giving that glimpse into Jasmine and Rens book. Gosh , Ren is such a train wreck.. this book will definitely be a hard one to read 😅 Zinnia and Death!!!! I need that book like yesterday! Also, Nero and Ender… they piqued my interest already in previous books.
This author is the shit. She just came out of nowhere with this series and got me addicted so bad! Now I’m waiting not so patiently Jasmine and Rens book.
🔶 both virgins 🔶mates 🔶 mother of slow burn 🔶 crazy twists 🔶 no cheating 🔶 a bit of om drama ( h asks for another guy to kiss her to understand something) 🔶 ow drama- not actually but one girl asks about Bram and wants to call him 🔶triggers- if you read whole series then you know what Mags did in first book. It’s then revealed that the guy also touched her and kissed her (no rape) and she let him and he humiliated by saying how ugly and undesirable she is. She offered herself instead of her sister for arranged marriage.

It’s Magnolia and Bram’s turn. Magnolia is the youngest of the Thornheart sisters, and it’s time for her trial as set by the Mother to ensure that her coven keeps their magical gifts. Her familiar, Bram, who is a crow shifter and her best friend, should be there to help her through. The problem is that their relationship has been suffering over the last couple of years, because of some trauma Mags suffered during her oldest sister’s trial, not to mention that everyone but Mags realizes that Bram is in love with her. I did like this story, getting to know Mags better and finding out about Bram, since he was so quiet and in the background in the other books. It’s frustrating that it takes Mags as long as it does to realize what her feelings are. The trial that is imposed on Mags, the mystery she is tasked with solving, was a little hard to follow, only because there were so many character names to keep straight. There were also some inconsistencies that made me wonder if it was a writing error, or if I hadn’t been paying attention and missed something. For example, Mags narrates that Rose has black bat wings, when in the last book it was a big deal that Rose’s wings were actually white. Also, toward the end when Magnolia’s touch can kill, her sisters touch her and she touches them without anything happening. Even though with this book the sisters have completed the trials required of Coven Thornheart, I know that their cousin Jasmine has a story coming, so I’m looking forward to that. There are also other secondary characters who are interesting, especially Zinnia, and have untold stories. I am hoping that this great series continues.
OMG!!! I think this was my favorite of all the Thornheart books.
We have seen Bram and Magnolia coming for a long time, and the story did not disappoint. It was quite an intense book. There were a lot of twists and turns, and of course, it revolved around Mother's challenge for Magnolia.
I absolutely loved their relationship. Even though, this book started after Bram had been Mags' familiar for years, I did not feel as if we missed out on their foundation. The connection between them was deep and undeniable.
We have seen Bram's love for Magnolia in the previous books. Even though Mags was hesitant and skittish about their relationship, I can understand her, especially with what happened with her. Bram was the best kind of MMC. He was alpha but so patient and kind with Magnolia. He was possessive but supportive of Mags, and did not try to control her. I also really enjoyed learning more about Bram's family and their customs. Magnolia was amazing. She was so brave and a badass. A lot of things happened, both before and during this book, and she faced them all with immense courage. Once she accepted that her and Bram were inevitable, she fought for him as well.
Overall, I really liked this book and would definitely go back to it. Sherilee did an amazing job writing their story, and I enjoyed the development of the book. I am looking forward to reading the cousins' books and I hope we get to see more of Bram's family and the hounds.
The Thornheart Trials Series : ✅ 1 A Curse in Darkness (2021) - 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ WARRIC and WILLOW - extra star for Warric for his patience with annoying Willow ✅ 2 A Vow of Ruin (2022) - 4.2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ DRAVEN and IRIS -I liked it a little more than part 1 and Iris wasn't that exasperating 😊 ✅ 3 A Trial by Blood (2022) - 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ RONAN ana ROSE - read 27.05.25r. -It was the best reading so far from this author in this and the previous Knights of Hell Series. Less playing hot and cold. More communication, support and showing love to each other instead of constantly denying it. 🥰 ✅ 4 An Oath at Midnight (2023) - 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ BRAN and MAGNOLIA - read 29.05 25r. -not as good as the previous one, but also exciting. In addition, there is a bonus scene in the newsletter, so I gave it a full 5 stars 🥰 ❌ 5 A Promise of Ashes (2023) ❌ 6 A Bond in Flames (2024)
Bram and Magnolia’s story was such an amazing way to the series! From when they were first introduced in the first book, I had really high hopes their story was gonna knock it out of the park and it definitely did not disappoint. It was everything I thought it would be and more!! The amount of angst and sexual tension in the beginning was driving me crazy. They were always on the verge of “will they or won’t they” and when they FINALLY got together, it was s p i c y 🔥🔥. I also loved how Bram’s basically “touch her and you die” that’s literally my favorite trope being used!!
However, I am sad to see it end. I loved every single one of the sisters’ journey on their trials and finding their mate. I can’t wait to read Ren and Jasmine’s book and how their story is going to be like. I already know it’s going to be so good!
An Oath at Midnight – An incredible way to wrap up the story of the Thornheart sisters!
Sherilee does it once again. She takes her readers on an emotional journey that wraps up beautifully the story of Magnolia and Bram. This book is full of twist and turns that leave you gasping and eager to turn the next page.
I’ve loved how she build up the moment that Magnolia finally sees Bram for what he truly is, her familiar but also so much more – her mate. I appreciated very much how Sherilee ties up past storylines into Magnolia’s book. As the last of the sisters, Magnolia’s story is darker than the others but also full of passion and strength. Cannot wait to read the cousin’s stories and of course Ren.
I received an ARC. My review is my honest reflection.
man did i feel bad for bram throughout this book, especially that gut-wrenching feeling when mags only recognized him as a familiar but he saw her as his mate and he had to suppress that for years. this book was interesting because bram was actually doing his own thing for a lot of the book, and it felt like trouble always brewed whenever he was separated from magnolia. like almost every time. to the point where it's kind of like.... don't leave her because she's going to get hurt.
and boy magnolia, so much trauma and shitting this happened to her and the hex at the end is so sad because she really lived feeling weird and wrong but not knowing why. also i cant believe she's sicced as death's reaper at the end too. it was still a fun read!

A dual POV slow burn, fated mates with a touch of darkness, magic and murder mystery. Although we get a glimpse into Mags and Bram from the previous books, this one gives us all the answers and background, as well as the final wrap up with the rest of the characters. Loved the balance of romance with an interesting plot, good steam and pining 👌🏻 This could be read as a stand alone but you’ll get a much better reading experience if you start from the beginning 😉.
This whole series has been a pleasure to read and although the sister’s stories are done, looks like there will be another book coming 👏🏻. If you’ve enjoyed the previous books then this is another great addition. 3.5⭐️
An Oath at Midnight was amazing. It was one of my most highly anticipated reads and it did not disappoint. The author didn't hold anything back when it came to Magnolia and Bram, she put them through the wringer. Their journey was difficult to say the least. It was fraught with danger, action, suspense, twists and turns, angst, steam, love and so much more. I loved it and highly recommend it as well as the rest of the series. I can't wait to see what comes next in this world.
When I read A Curse in Darkness the first in this series I knew that Mags and Bram where going to be my favourite couple. I love that we finally got to know more about Bram and his family. I also love that we got a lot of character development for Mags especially if you are someone who has read the other books (this is written as a standalone but if you read the others it just gives more indepth details for certain past events).
I recieved an ARC but will definitely be buying a hard copy to add to my collection.
