Inspiring, empowering and entertaining!

I adore the idea behind this project; it’s so simple and yet absolutely brilliant! These are not only stories of brave and passionate women, this is also a great lesson in feminism; this is a perfect way to show little girls that they can change the world.

The stories are short so we don’t have to worry about the short attention span of our young readers, and the gorgeous illustrations are a perfect finishing touch. Even though all stories revolve around animal lovers they are very different from each other. That way we learn about different ways of supporting our planet; from researching sharks to building zoo habitats and advocating to ban using animals in circuses. My favorite part is including stories of very young animal activists who prove that it’s never too early to make a difference.

Highly recommended for girls AND boys!

Thank you Rebel Girls and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVE the Rebel Girl books! This current book is about some amazing women who have done so much for animals. Some I have heard of but many I haven’t. One Sami Bayly does amazing paintings and books on animals! I will definitely be purchasing some for gifts!

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read, review and learn from this amazing book!

my third read from the rebel girls series, and it definitely didn't disappoint!

these books are super quick to read and include one-page bios for each woman and a portrait, also created by women. my favorite part were the quotes included because it really took you inside the mind of each person. as always, this was inspirational, making points such as that age doesn't matter to make a difference, which is especially useful since the target audience is young children.

i also especially loved how each illustration related to the woman's cause and the animals they helped with their work. in addition, i enjoyed the writing style (how it is slightly fairytale-esque) and the layout (with little paw prints!).

the variety in the jobs (from filmmaker to conservationist to ichthyologist) and stories (from helping locals preserve lions to starting a Black Birder's Week) was wonderful as well as the diversity in the country of the women and the illustrators (though the majority was from the usa).

Another great book from the Rebel Girls series, this time about women who work with and preserve animals of all kinds and all over the world. I liked that the women themselves came from several backgrounds, were famous or not so much, younger ones were also included, and that they had different jobs and techniques. The book also includes an attachment for children how to be an animal ally. I was so fascinated by the book, I thought I had missed something in life. I only wondered why some women, also young ones and from countries that have a register of births, had a line "birth date unknown". Otherwise another great one in the series.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

I remember when I was younger I really loved reading about animals and the people who took care of them and worked to make the lives of animals better. I didn't realize how many powerful women were really included in helping animals until I read this book. I really wish a book like this would have existed when I was a kid because it would have really helped me believe in my dreams of helping animals.

The graphics for each woman mentioned was beautifully done.

All young girls who love animals should read this book and see the impact these women have had in helping animals.

This is a really well done book. It’s full of new stories, I only recognized 5/25 women in the book. The illustrations are beautiful. Each story reads less like a biography and more like a bedtime story which I great for kids.

Kiddo (8) and I really enjoyed this one! There are many inspiring stories about girls and women who are helping and caring for animals. There are also ideas about ways for you to help animals.

Kiddo is very very into cute animals at the moment (The number of stuffed animals he sleeps with just keeps growing) and though he protested reading anything over Christmas break, he was happy to curl up with me and listen to the stories once I cajoled him into listening to "just one." In fact, every time I stopped for a minute to rest my voice he immediately flipped to the next page himself.

We enjoyed the beautiful illustrations that go with each one page story (there were many exclamations of "It's so cute!" about the various animals pictured) and the quotes from each featured girl and woman.

The reading level is a bit higher than kiddo's (3rd grade) just because of how dense the text is on the page. It makes a great read-aloud for kids age 6-9 however, and a slightly older kid could read it on their own. I found it was also helpful to read aloud because of some science words and names of animals kiddo was unfamiliar with that I could explain when he asked as we went along.

*Thanks to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for providing an early copy for review.

I've read or flipped through almost all of the Rebel Girls books and given them out to countless kids at the library. Rebel Girls Animal Allies is by far my favorite! It's possible that I'm biased because I'm also a wildlife rehabber, but this book is so special. I've been an animal fan for as long as I can remember so when I went into this book, I assumed I would know most of the women in this book. I love that I was completely wrong! I learned so much! So many amazing women that I had never heard of and even a few that I knee of the famous animals they worked with but not the women themselves! This book was diverse in every way! I love the women were from all over the world, of all ages, races, and careers! Each spread is a small life story of an Animal Ally and a gorgeous portrait of them! I think it would be really fun to read about one woman a week and then spend the week learning about her work and the animals she's worked with! I hope this books opens many kiddos' eyes to how great animals are and how much good one person can do!

Is there NOTHING that the Rebel Girls can't do? I'm already obsessed with their series, and I'm thrilled to add this newest edition. The best part is that this book takes care of holiday gifts for many of the little girls (and boys!) on my list. I love the wonderful illustrations, and the writing is simple enough to be enjoyed by the younger set, while intelligently enough written that it will appeal to the teens.
This book truly is a tribute to 26 spectacular women - from professors to painters, and actors to vets - who have been champions for animals in a huge variety of ways. Not only does it educate and entertain, but also introduces so many potential careers and ways to be involved with the animal kingdom that it will open the imaginations for anyone who reads it.
Not only can it be "read," but it would be a great source for bedtime stories since each entry is short and sweet and could lead to some inspirational dreams - and future conversations.
I can't wait for the next surprise from Rebel Girls!

I mean, what else can I say about this book other than it is another excellent addition to the Rebel Girls series. This is the first one I’ve read that has been more focused. To be honest, the majority of the girls in this book were new to me, which made it a much more interesting read and meant that I learned a lot too!

The book is targeted at ages 8-11 but really they are for everyone. I’d certainly recommend reading Animal Allies to much younger children to get them excited about animals and open their eyes to the many careers out there that involve working work animal. They stories also provide great talking points and the illustrations are beautiful.

Another great and informative installment by Rebel Girls. I love that they always include a good mixture of well-known figures like Bindi Irwin , but also include lesser-known and more modern people. The artists they choose are always great too.

This was an amazing book that taught about passionate women that followed their dreams of working with and to help animals. It was inspiring to me, because I want to become a mammalogist when I grow up, and my favorite person to read about was Bella Lack who was an environmental activist.

We have many of the Rebel Girls series, but this was the first time we've seen this title. My 7 year old daughter is a vet / park ranger in training, so being able to show her these great examples of women following their dreams was wonderful! We read tons of books about different conservationists, zoologists, and biologists, so I was nicely surprised to see that most of the women highlighted in this book were new to us. (Don't get me wrong, Jane Goodall is the GOAT, but been there, done that.) Also, the variety of ages of the women makes a difference to learn about. Some have spent their whole life working for animals, but it's nice to see younger / more recent activists highlighted as well.
The writing level is in line with other Rebel Girls books, meaning a bit too high for my 1st grader to read on her own, but she likes looking at the beautiful illustrations while I read to her. The QR codes for more information was a nice add-on, too.
NetGalley provided the digital copy for review, but I'll ask my local library to purchase a copy of this book and probably buy my own copy for our home.

I love this series!

We are transported through the stories of women scientists to different ecosystems and the animals living within them. We start with Amanda and Heather who are scuba diving studying seahorses that founded Project Seahorse with the aim to protect marine ecosystems. Then we follow Bella who managed to correspond with THE David Attenborough and ended up banning the use of animals in UK circuses. Next, we meet Bindi who was positively influenced by her nature-loving parents and wants to pass that love on in a detached from nature society.

Biruté's love for orangutans started by reading Curious George to finding herself reintroducing over 500 individuals back to the wild. Christina became an expert on hippos and got known for her dedication to a little hippo named Fiona. Corina and her love for birds inspired the Black birders initiative! Christina and her enamoured passion for capturing the beauty of the ocean with her camera, The ocean but sharks specifically due to their bad reputation additionally, inspired Eugenie to become an ichthyologist and break down some myths around the fear of sharks. Gillian with her view on nature is that there are so many stories to be told and narrated to the world. Then we have filmmaker Gunjan who would through high altitudes and jungles to capture the wildlife. We meet Hana who is determined to fight to preserve the nature of her country, Iraq despite all the difficulties she is facing. Of course, such a book could not exist without mentioning Jane and her work as a primatologist (working with apes and showing their connection to humans).

In the second half of the book, we meet Julie, a conservationist biologist and her love at first sight with a lemur when she was 13. You may know Kirsten Bell as a famous actress from Holywood but she is also one of the proponents of the 'Adopt, Don't shop' mantra. She absolutely is a dog person! Then we have Kristen and her love for bats whilst we learn that everything that shaped her career started as a Girl Scout project. So inspiring! Reptiles are not as loved as other cuter and fluffier species but that did not stop Laura from becoming a herpetologist and seeing their beauty reflected in her eyes. We then meet Leela, an expert in lions who tries to reintroduce this species that has become extinct in parts of the world such as Egypt where she is from. Another conservationist called Maria loves hard-scaled pangolins and other endangered species and speaks for them! We then continue with Olivia and her butterflies. She is a pollinator activist. How freaking cool is that of a job description???

In Nigeria, we meet Rachel, another conservationist, working mainly around the Niger Delta area. Saengduean is a person where basically animals go for retirement to live their last days on this Earth as well as animals that just need recovery from abuse, trauma and/or injury. Meet Sami a talented artist that brings beauty to any peculiar animal you may think of. Exhibit designer, Sue, recreates habits in zoos inspired by their homelands for the animals to feel more at home. Temple, an autistic woman, decided to take action and educate people about her condition as well as talk about how important it is to address farm animal welfare. Last but not least, we learn about Tolani, a veterinarian who has even founded an animal hospital to host both 2 and 4-legged creatures.

I cannot wait to teach my daughter about all these women through these books and inspire her to become one with nature. :) Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I only discovered this series recently and am thoroughly enjoying it. Weirdly enough, although I expected it to be the woman involved with horses that would grab my attention, I found myself repeatedly flashing back to the very first entry on Amanda Vincent and Heather Koldewey. Well, actually it was sorta horse related. Seahorses. I've seen them in various aquariums and always smile watching them seemingly languidly drifting through the water, occasionally wrapping their tails around a clump of seaweed or whatever to suck in food. They look so peaceful, not to mention that it's the males who give birth. Trapped by fishing nets and hunted for medicinal reasons, they have been the focus of Vincent and Koldewey efforts to protect.

It was fascinating to read about the routes these remarkable women took to find their passion and make a difference. I recall being saddened as a child viewing monkeys and bears jailed in small cages at an area zoo. I was too young to take action, at least too young to realize I might be able to make a difference in their lives, but people like Bella Lacke didn't let age stop her. She wrote a letter to someone who could help. As a child, Jane Goodall's beloved stuffed chimp, Jubilee, surely hinted at her future. Autistic and sent to a special school, Temple Grandin discovered her connection to horses. Birute Caldikas was inspired by the first book she recalls checking out of the library, "Curious George".

Twenty-five animal allies are showcased. They provide inspiration and, who knows, maybe the sense of "If they can do it, so can I" that just might lead us to the next generation of astounding Rebel Girls. If, as an adult reader, you find the stories somewhat limited in content, I'll also note that an icon is provided for scanning to take you to fuller stories online. I didn't check them all out but the ones I did make a point of visiting were worth the effort.

Bottom line, although new to this book series, I'm liking it more and more as I become better acquainted. It's a plus, too, that not only are those showcased from around the world and of different races and backgrounds but 25 different artists from around the world were used to illustrate the different stories. Thank you so much #NetGalley and #RebelGirls for allowing me to visit and get to know these remarkable women. The message I got was that we can make a difference.

It's books like this that make me wish I had a daughter or at least a close niece that loved reading that I could share these books. Sadly, the two that I have a close relationship with that are girls aged 6 and 8 are more into technology than reading which is a shame. Maybe they might turn to books when they are older. In this series Rebel Girls, I also wish it was around when I was growing up just imagine the careers I could have ended up with or the heroes I had as a female. I would have had some great strong female role models, but back then we didn't have this exposure. I recently went to a talk about the scientist Marie Curie and they talked about the oppression of women in careers despite there still being some struggles, even in the last 20 years we have come so far for females to be recognised as when I was growing up, we didn't have that recognition and I grew up in the 90s and the early to mid-2000s. This time Rebel Girls has decided to delve into the world of Wildlife heroes. Of course, on this list is Jane Goodall with her work with monkeys etc - she was the only one I knew in this book besides the young Bindi Irwin who took over some of her dad’s work. Like the previous other books, we are also exposed to famous wildlife explorers, we didn't know existed from Eugenie Clark and her work with sharks to Christina Goursch who works with Hippos, and Amanda Lear aka Batgirl as she works with Batman's fear - "Bats".

If you love animals and have ever thought about working with animals of any kind as a career, and are aged between 8-14 years then this edition of Rebel Girls - Animal Allies should be the book on your wishlist for 2023.

Every girl has a unique talent she can use to act as an ally to animals. This colorful book shows how 25 women developed an interest in and love for something in the animal kingdom as a youngster. Each woman went on to champion animals using her unique talents, observational skills, insight, and determination.

The short, easy-to-read biographies draw readers in. Some of the stories include a scannable QR code which leads to in-depth audio stories. Rebel Girls consulted with conservationist Bindi Irwin (one of the 25 animal allies) to present activities at the end of the book.

It’s never too early or too late to take an interest in the wonderful world of nature, participate in citizen science projects, or get involved in research that helps animals.

What I Loved About This Book

The colorful illustrations grab the reader’s attention, and the interesting biographies arouse curiosity about the women and the animals they advocate for. Teachers, parents, and grandparents could read the stories out loud to younger children. Likewise, involved adults could adapt the activities at the end for either younger or older audiences.

The authors made sure to include women from multiple ethnicities and countries. There’s no need to exclude boys from the stories (I plan on buying a copy for my grandson)—anyone can become an animal ally!

This is a must-have for teachers, librarians, parents, and grandparents.

I love reading books that inspire me and teach me something new, and Rebel Girls Animal Allies: 25 Tales of Women Working with Wildlife did just that. This book is a collection of short stories about amazing women who have dedicated their lives to helping animals and protecting the environment. From scientists to activists, from veterinarians to conservationists, these women have shown courage, compassion, and creativity in their work.

The stories are written in an engaging and accessible way, with colorful illustrations and fun facts. I learned so much about different animals and their habitats, as well as the challenges and opportunities that these women face. Some of the stories were familiar to me, such as Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, but others were new and surprising, such as Lucy King and her work with elephants and bees1, or Sylvia Earle and her exploration of the ocean depths1. Each story also has a quote from the woman featured, which adds a personal touch and a source of motivation.

This book is perfect for anyone who loves animals and wants to learn more about the women who are making a difference in the world. It is also a great book for young readers who want to discover new role models and possibilities for their future. Rebel Girls Animal Allies: 25 Tales of Women Working with Wildlife is a book that celebrates the power of women and the beauty of nature. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired and informed.

As someone who has loved animals for their whole life, I was SO excited to see that Rebel Girls was writing a book specifically about animal advocates! This book is full of incredible stories about how girls and women all around the world used their passions to help animals thrive. There were stories about animal allies like Jane Goodall and Bindi Irwin with whom I was very familiar, but this also introduced me to women like ornithologist Corina Newsome, conservationist Maria Diekmann, and activist Saengduean "Lek" Chailert".

When thinking and talking about animal rights the first question is usually "I'm just one person, what can I do to help?" and all of these women showed that, as long as you're passionate and dedicated, one person can do SO much. I loved that this book also gave tips to the reader to start their journey to become an animal ally. I have been saying for a long time that someday I want to set up bat houses in my backyard and that I keep meaning to start volunteering at my local animal shelter, but this book finally made me realize that I don't have to wait until "someday". I can (and should) start now!

If you're a lover of animals (or raising one) this book is absolutely required reading. The stories are inspiring and the illustrations that accompany each story are beautiful.

I remain, as always, a sucker for the Rebel Girls franchise.

This edition follows the same trusted recipe that started with the very first Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: short descriptions of influential women, accompanied by a one-of-a-kind portrait of the subject.

Rebel Girls Animal Allies is a collection that features women who have made wildlife their life’s work. The editors have made a great effort to represent women across races and cultures: mostly in the USA, some in Canada and the UK, and a couple of women from elsewhere. As with my previous reviews, I do feel that more countries can and should be represented in these collections.

This edition struck me as being more direct about the intersections of feminism and race, rather than painting a generalised picture of a sisterhood of women that “doesn’t see colour”. While this openness may well have been part of the ethos of previous collections, Animal Allies is really the first of the series that has managed to capture it.

Three cheers for the Rebel Girls!

My absolute favourite Rebel Girls release yet, combining the stories of 25 strong and inspirational women with a love of animals. Animal protection and interst in animal conservation locally and worldwide is vitally important to my family. Not only are the creatures great and small, so beautiful and able to teach us so much about the world, but our ecosystems depend on them. We get to read about women who put these beautiful creatures foremost. We can read more by scanning qr codes. The pictures are purely stunning. My daughters spent so much time pouring over them. They immediately wanted binoculars to go exploring and pencils and papers to join in the sketching activities suggested at the end. A brilliant addition to the Rebel Girls family of books. Another one my family simply have to have in our collection. It is one we will return to often. #rebelgirlsanimalallies #rebelgirls #netgalley #animalkingdom #animalconservation #animalprotection #strongwomen #inspirationalwomen #nonfiction

Haven't read a Rebel Girls book I didn't admire and learn from!
The Rebel Girls books are a great encouragement for the girls who will grow to be the movers, shakers, and fixers of the world they will inherit. The women in this installment are not all well known except in their home countries (or well publicized women like Bindi Irwin and Jane Goodall) and are from countries all around the world, like Australia, Madagascar, Thailand, India, Kenya, and Iraqi Kurdistan. This excellent book is designed to make all think outside the box and act in belief in their opportunity to study and become activists for the animal world before it is destroyed any further.
The illustrations continue to be delightful, imaginative, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!

Before giving another Rebel Girls book to my daughter (who loves all things animal and all things wildlife), I quickly scrolled through the names of all the women who have their stories told in this book. I was so happy to see my all-time wildlife favorite Jane Goodall listed there! I quickly read the page about her, smiled, and happily let my daughter read it. And when she finished this quick read, I read other stories too. This book is so sweet! It has the perfect balance of fierce and smart women, beautiful illustrations, and information not just about the said women, but just enough to make the young reader more curious about wildlife.
The book is a perfect quick read for those who love beautiful picture books and who also want to raise their children with some feminism in mind. The creators of this book have done a great job of writing about smart, fierce, and strong women who make a lasting difference in the world.

I absolutely adore this book. I don’t normally read or review books for children, but the topic of this book made me pick it up. I was lucky enough to get my BS in biology and work as a zookeeper for a few years before I had to step away from that career path. this book highlights some of the stars of the animal world. these are women I looked up to and shaped my career goals as I was starting out. they deserve all the recognition they get from this book. I also believe this book is so important and every kid, but focused on girls because it shows them that you can turn that love of animals into a career and it isn’t just for the boys.

I also wanted to give a big shoutout to whomever chose the women. The story about the curator of the Cincinnati Zoo was especially special to me, as I was able to work with Fiona’s dad, Henry, before he moved and passed away!

Thank you to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for the e-ARC of this book to read and review. I'm a big fan of the Rebel Girls stories overall, but I love the 25-story editions even better than their longer bedtime story books, as there's a chance to dive deeper into specific niches and also cater towards kids who are showing an interest in a specific area/genre/field. I have to say that this compilation of Animal Allies stories is my favorite one of their themed collections yet! The variety of influential rebel girls featured is fantastic, and the anthology does a great job showcasing different ways you can work with animals, animal science, conservation, activism, etc. I think that readers interested in animals will not only be entertained and inspired by the stories included, but also it can start conversations about different future career fields and potential ways of getting involved with animal welfare efforts right now within their own communities.

This humongous book series branches out into a green-minded volume, as it looks at 25 stories where females have proven pioneering in some way as regards animal protection. A young girl getting British circuses banned from using animals, a woman determined to make birdwatching acceptable for people of colour in the light of a racist bitch in New York, and even someone determined to protect the land Persian leopards in Iraq need to roam – who has yet to see one of the beasts in real life. All are here and more, taking us right round the world, in the usual format of full-page illustration, quote, biographical data and page of heavily fictionalised text. It's the latter that has and always will be the problem for me, as I dislike the way everything has to be dressed up as a slice of a novel, and not delivered in the routine factual manner. It's not like it's done a jot to make this series any less successful, however...

This book is just so perfect for any budding young animal ally. This beautifully illustrated book tells the stories of 25 women who have centred their lives around helping animals. I particularly liked the fact that this is super current, including many very young women who have made a real difference; I can imagine this will be incredibly inspirational for children to see.

I really liked that there is a QR code on some of the stories, allowing the reader to find out even more. At the the end of the book, there is a space to write your own story and even to include a self-portrait, as well as a section on what you can do a become an 'animal ally'.

This book has clearly been very well thought about and the result is beautiful.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
