I have been reading this book for quite some time in small increments. It is a cookbook and it is a history book. It is chock full of information, almost encyclopedic in nature. It is definitely a book for foodies. I bought this book in an Antique mall as the illustrated cover caught my eye. I find it a great addition to my cookbook collection. More that 500 recipes to consider and if you are an historical buff, it can stand on its own just for the history of Gastronomy.

A must read for the foodies...

I was led to this book after reading "It's an Old New England Custom" (it was noted as a resource)

The first third of the the book is a history of food in the United States. The final two-thirds is a collection of American recipes ranging from basic to gourmet.

This is a fun book with a lot of very good details about the development of American cuisine. Some of the recipes are a bit dated but it is all part of the historic journey
