Alan Feralis, half dark elf, wizard and son of a human knight, has been called upon by the elves, his most hated of enemies, to awaken an ancient wizard as the world awaits the arrival of the necromancer and the end of all life if he is not defeated. It seemed like such a simple task at first, for a powerful elemental wizard. Just go to the mountain, send in his elemental servants, and have them tap on a an ancient wizard's tomb. Such a very simple, if somewhat dangerous task. But then he never expected to awaken an entire family of ancient wizards, or after that thousands more. He never expected to have to battle armies of the undead. And above all else, he never expected for the dragons to get involved.
This book was recommended to me by a relatively new goodreads friend. I purchased it and enjoyed it very much. All the tropes about wizard, purer elves, dragons are all there (along with many other tropes). However, they are handled in a deft manner that actually caused some unexpected merriment. Yes it is epic fantasy, yes there is a significant list of significant characters, yes it was good versus evil (or was it?) Regardless, it was a fun book and I will look for more of his writing. Why not five stars? Some of the handling of time passing was disjointed. Getting back into the flow of the book was not always easy after a significant time period occcuurreed while nothing appeared to happen such as when a significant character slept for months.
I now have read numerous books by Greg Curtis and all have been enjoyable. As with this one have many twist and turns that can’t always figure out what is going to happen. Well written good characters and a bit of humor thrown in to make story even more entertaining and enjoyable. A much underrated author on this site that has always delivered quality writing. If you like the over view for a book then it is worth the cost and time to read.
This story of a loner Dark Elf Druid who is prejudged as evil because some of his kinsmen were in league with a demon 200 years ago, is forced to help protect those who would've killed him on site is a excellent story. The only thing that is bad is we never find out which of the three women he would have chosen to marry, but he was very smart to run away.
Fabulous story chock full of everything needed to make an epic tale. The story felt like a trilogy without all the unnecessary gobbledygook to drag it out. Full of heroic actions, and MC with kindness, humility and ever-growing powers that steals the hearts of many, or at least 3 very different women that he was smart to run from in the end. This is a book not to miss, so get to reading.
You know, as I was reading this I thought it read like each chapter was almost skipping something in between...almost like each chapter was an episode of a TV show.
Once I got used to that, I realized there was very little "filler" in this, and the story was great. For example..
Also I thought at first Alan was a little too powerful and it would be him being overpowered throughout, I was glad that wasn't the case.
A lot of things could of been expanded as well, his time at the school for one, but the story flows well and I enjoy how the magic was presented in this. Solid cast of characters in this book, I hope the authors not done with Alan's story yet...but as it is, if you like Fantasy and are looking for a quick light read, grab this one.
great book. he could have made this into 3 books by adding in filler but he didn't. it was a fun 1 day read, couldn't have asked for a better book to pass the time. would like to see more of Alan but i don't think it would work because he is to powerful. oh well , i suggest you read it and enjoy.
Wonderful story of magic that has messages for your character, manners, courtesy, redemption, open mindedness. Through a lovely engaging world of dragons, elves and druids. Enjoyable!
