Little Lord Fauntleroy

Rate this book
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Little Lord Fauntleroy is the first children's novel written by English-American playwright and author Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was originally published as a serial in the St. Nicholas Magazine between November 1885 and October 1886, then as a book by Scribner's in 1886. The accompanying illustrations by Reginald Birch set fashion trends and Little Lord Fauntleroy also set a precedent in copyright law when in 1888 its author won a lawsuit against E. V. Seebohm over the rights to theatrical adaptations of the work. In mid-1880s Brooklyn, New York, young American Cedric Errol lives with his mother (never named, known only as Mrs. Errol or "Dearest") in genteel poverty after his father, Captain Errol, dies. They receive a visit from Havisham, an English lawyer with a message from Cedric's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt. With the deaths of his father's elder brothers, Cedric is now Lord Fauntleroy and heir to the Earldom and a vast estate. The Earl wants Cedric to live with him and learn to be an English aristocrat.

It was easy to read, there weren't too many archaic words and expressions (which made me,a person to whom English is not a native language, feel very relieved), it was very cute, maybe even too cute at moments. This book also made me think about things that I'd never ever thought of; it cheered me up and showed me the world in a very optimistic light, it had an overall positive effect on me. A splendid book! Now I understand why Little Lord Fauntleroy was such a success. This is something I'd enjoy reading even if I were 60.

Something I read as a child. It was a book one of many I had devoured. A lesson in how people should be to each other regardless of wealth. The old learning from the young. Those themes are still relevant now

Little Lord Fauntleroy is a quaint story about a boy who suddenly inherits a great deal of money and a title. He goes to live with his uncle and undertakes the task of living up to his inheritance.
This book is very specific to the time in which it was written, but it does deal with some universal human experiences. The loss of a parent is what makes the little boy inherit all these wonderful things, so dealing with loss and a sudden change of situation is a possible application for this story. This story takes place in England, so it would also apply to a study of places around the world.
