Winner Takes All: Master/slave Fantasies by Christopher Pierce
The prolific author Christopher Pierce (christopherpierceerotica.com) has appeared in practically every gay magazine and more than three dozen story anthologies. Winner Takes All , his newest collection, offers the title novella and 16 shorter stories about gay Master/slave relationships, ranging from the edgiest to the most romantic with every variation in between. While only a few stories are set in other times or other worlds than our own, they are all sex fantasies, not slices of life. Their aim is to entertain, which they do splendidly. OVERVIEW
The writing has a pronounced masculinity which I found compelling as it highlights virility and that is sexy to me. I am also delighted to learn that there are so many different terms to refer to the male sexual organ other than just cock or penis. I have also learned that different ways of calling a penis evokes different feelings. Words usage are important and it is powerful when used right. Tube-steak and cum sack makes me go wild with desire. So yea the writing is strong and honed to please.
Winner Takes All is erotica done right. It delivers what it promised; it helps its reader to get off. That is what we are looking for in our erotica right? Not only was it well written, it held true power to ignite our sexual desire hence I call this quality erotica.
This anthology is heavy on TPE, domination and submission, sweet sexual torments like orgasm denial, delicious bondage of various kinds, lots of humiliation and degradation, watersports and some corporal punishments. There are a couple of scenes which might freak out some vanilla readers. Otherwise all else is aim to please readers who enjoys serious BDSM that leans more towards the hardcore side.
I have enjoyed this book immensely and had a tough time suppressing my urge to highlight the whole book. If you are those who enjoys getting into the minds of a real dom or sub, this book is definitely for you as it portrays them perfectly. You would find yourself swept away into the minds of the narrators experiencing their realities where every flicker of their emotions are closely felt by you. This book was written with passion and the desire to bring Master/Slave fantasies to life.
One more thing, please try not to skip the Editor's Note or the Foreword. Both was brilliantly written and you would gain insights on what this anthology is about and what it aims to achieve apart from other tidbits.

There are enough Warnings EVERYWHERE not to attract the false readers to the book.
So, if you will be shocked by an extremely graphical presentation full of taboos, you can blame ONLY yourself, it is really only your OWN fault.
Because before you can dive into this collection out of 17 VERY SMUTTY short novels you have to pass first through the warnings of publisher, then through the author's foreword - that explains you the meaning of TPE(Total Power Exchange) - and at last through the editor's note.

The first time I tried the stories in the book I cherry-picked the ones other readers seemed to have enjoyed the best, but they weren't really for me. But now that I've checked out the rest of the stories I found the ones I thought would be second stringers actually had more of the emotional connection I was looking for. I enjoyed those much more, particularly the longer multi-part final story, the eponymous Winner Takes All.

For me, it didn't work. I couldn't get emotionally involved in the stories. I only read a cherry-picked five of them, and they were so similar in tone that I quit and this is technically a dnf. The Executioner's Boy was the best of those I read. I liked the set-up immensely, but the way the story is told, and some of the events, just don't do it for me.
For example,
I give 5 stars to Pierce for his imagination
'What is this place?' I asked.
'They're the candlemakers,' Viejo said. 'All the candles here are made with the boys' precum. It burns much longer than wax alone.'
I stepped closer and looked. Sure enough, all the boys' dicks were hard and dribbling precum into the bowls. The men were stimulating them to keep them dripping.
Creative, but emotionally removed, and so for me, in no way hot.

Every now and then I read something that reminds me that M/M romance and gay erotica are seriously different genres. I dislike essentialist sounding explanations, but there are times, (most often after I've spent more than four and a half minutes watching pornography) when I just feel like shouting out: men and women are turned on by very different kinds of stories!
I enjoyed reading these stories--they are well-written and inventive--but I liked them more because they gave me a window into a world that felt truly exotic and weird than because I felt they got at the heart of my own experience. (The only chapter I can say that about was David Stein’s smart and incisive Editor's Note, “Value-Added Porn,” on the difference between porn and erotica, which I plan on quoting in some blog post if I ever get my act together.)
For me, the world of the stories was interesting but not appealing. It wasn't just the dog bowls and the piss play. I found the mentality of the slaves impossible to identify with.

“My pain or pleasure wasn’t important. All that mattered was serving him.”
That level of abjection and selflessness is just too much for me. I find it alienating. However, I think my distaste is exactly that, a matter of taste: I don’t usually like most “Club” novels that purport to depict people in the BDSM lifestyle. Any story in which characters eagerly adopt an established role leaves out most of the inner conflict and ambivalence that is the most erotically charged part of D/s for me. (As slave fics go, I find Yhalen’s inner torments over his attraction to his master? lover? rapist? both fascinating and intensely erotic, though in other ways Bloodraven is far too brutally sadistic for my taste).
The genre of Winner Takes All: Master/Slave Fantasies by Christopher Pierce doesn’t help matters. With a few notable exceptions, the book offers erotic teases, ficlets, which are little more than a hot scenario or exchange in a fantasy version of gay slave life. Some stories are better than others--hotter than others--but there was not enough characterization or complexity for them to truly be erotic for me. Every character in this collection is essentially interchangeable and virtually all of them wholeheartedly embrace their situation. And that I think is the key difference. It's not enough that a book describes a kinky scenario; unless I feel involved with the characters, and to some extent challenged by what they are experiencing, then it's not very different than watching porn or looking at explicit photos, neither of which I find particularly arousing.
There were a few exceptions: I really admired "The Executioner's Boy.” It was imaginative and moody and dark. It also surprised me: usually I can't tolerate any erotic fiction that includes serious threats of death as part of the domination, but this one made that work. The title story, the last in the collection, was the longest and the most developed, with a strong story arc and compelling character development, though the narrator’s personality or mentality didn’t differ noticeably from that of the slaves in the other stories.
As I said above, I was very interested reading this. In some instances, you can learn more about yourself—your imagination and your desires--from well-written fictions that don’t quite work for you than from ones that fit your kinks dead-on. I suspect that M/M romance will always have a somewhat uneasy relationship with gay erotica and speaking from the M/M camp, I think it’s worthwhile to be both aware and respectful of how these genres—and their authors and audiences--differ. There’s no question that these stories are arousing for the right audience, and echoing editor David Stein, I am firmly of the opinion that such fiction has value—drastically underrated value. I admire Pierce for his achievement, even when I can’t totally experience it as it was intended.

Throughout my reading, I remembered how much I had fun reading my very first BDSM novels. They were not complicated stories, they did not seek to remake the world; they were just stories of domination and submission with a good dose of BDSM. I liked that very much. Reading this collection of short stories, I experienced a similar good-old-time pleasure.
All stories have a little something different from each others. There is some gradation in intensity to one another. Several of the stories rang true, .
As for the last story, which disturbed some readers, if it has affected me, it was pleasantly. Many things excited me a lot, .
The writing is good and I noticed only two mistakes. But maybe I was too caught up in the stories to notice more.
These days, this is pretty rare that I read after midnight because I don’t want to stop reading until the end of the book. It’s what happened this time. So I give 5 stars to this book.

This is one of the most authentic BDSM books I've ever read. It's an anthology of several stories. They are extremely erotic, very graphic, and incredibly well-written and well-edited.
My intention was to give this book five stars, and I would have done so if not for the very last story. Although I understand the perspective of this first-person narrative, the story itself was beyond disturbing to me. It accounted for 30% of the book and it included scenes which were horrifyingly sadistic. The protag repeatedly stated he was not a pain slut, yet the Master continued torturing him.In all honestly, this story will give me nightmares... and it brought tears to my eyes.
Overall, I loved the anthology. I plan to read everything I can get my hands on by this author and will quickly recommend his books to other readers who appreciate authentic BDSM. One added note: this should be required reading for the wannabe BDSM authors in the mm romance genre, particularly those who are squeamish about the realities of a 24/7 BDSM relationship.

I prefer my master/slave fantasies to be dub-con/non-con, especially if they involve humiliation/degradation, so this book didn't really work for me since all but two stories were very much consensual with extremely eager to please slaves. And one of those two non-con stories switched so fast from resistant top to ultra-submissive slave that I didn't find it believable enough.
If you love very submissive slaves, dialogue you'd hear in porn, and lots of consensual watersports, this is the book for you.

Some good BDSM but not always following the rules!
A good cross-section of BDSM stories. This book contains some very tender moments as well as some very disturbing ones as well. Although the BDSM culture varies considerably from couple to couple there are certain things they all have in common – mainly the fact that one role is master and one role is slave. From what I understand this is still a mutual consenting relationship between two people. I didn't give this five stars because the use of contracts, safe words and mutual consent was lacking in nearly all the stories. I have read other works in which the rules are in play such as having a contract between the two parties and I have fantasized of being in either one roll or the other depending on the situation. In most of these I would not want to be in the slave role because it appeared that the Masters had complete control over them and they had no say in what happened. Although there were only a few sadistic masters or other characters in the stories it could give someone the wrong idea and cause them to reject the BDSM lifestyle if they had been considering it because of this.
I gave it four stars for ingenuity and creativeness in portraying the BDSM lifestyle putting aside the lack of rules. This book is recommended for those who are considering the lifestyle but with the caveat that they understand a true BDSM relationship needs to contain a contract and hard and soft limits for both partners in the relationship.

The last story was one of the best examples of "The Test" that I've read since reading "Mr. Benson" How much is a person willing to withstand in order to prove (or discover) that he wants to be someone's slave? And from the other point of view, if you were looking for the perfect slave, wouldn't you keep trying to devise ways that would make them fail in order to satisfy yourself that, while good, this one wasn't "the one" you were searching for? And if they kept passing all the tests, wouldn't you in desperation, knowing that they couldn't be yours, keep upping the ante to find their weakness?
The only thing I found weird was the twist at the end when he goes back to his original master, but that was more because I never saw their previous M/s relationship. It seemed a tad convenient. Seeing some earlier scenes (or at least have him think about them) would have given a comparison between the two experiences and prevented this from being a convenient plot hole filled.

Anthologies are something I try to avoid if I can and this one was no different than many of the others I have read. I am not a lover of short stories and I ahd a really hard time getting into this. Christopher Pierce was a new author for me and I will have to give him another chance in the future. If I didn't have to read this for a challenge,I'm not sure if I would have finished this book.

Let me start by stating something: I don't like 24/7 TPE books. Every now and then, I read a book with this premise, and still haven't found a book that made me change my opinion. Besides from that, I'm no fan of slaves, so I wasn't going to enjoy this that much, and that's entirely my fault. However, I didn't buy the book just to hate it, but rather because I was curious, and some stories are hot anyway! I liked a few stories better than others. Goodnight my slaveboys was sweet and nice and one of the few with Master POV. Five bucks a swat was a nice fantasy material, but the distinction in this story (is a Dom/sub one) isn't very relevant. Fucked by a stranger is nice fantasy material as well.
Sadly, even if I keep SCREAMING in my heads "those are fantasies, don't take them too seriously" I couldn't ignore a lot of points. There are watersports, much more than I was aware, not just in the stories like Piss Mummy, but in several ones, as punishment, as a test, as something the characters enjoy, not something I personally enjoy reading. I was rolling my eyes everytime one character made the distinction between slave cum and master cum, boy meat and glorious master body, etc. That is entirely a matter of personal taste, nothing wrong with the book. Again, that's my fault for reading about master/slaves and not liking it, but really, as fantasies goes, there are a few ones that are nice, even if I couldn't really connect with any character.
Also, the level of sadism in the last story went waaaay beyond my comfort zone. Like crazy. I don't think even adding romance in that one, or anything a little closer to tenderness, could make me change my opinion.

The Executioner's Boy was well worth the read. Just wowed me - the ending especially! A couple others (Collared at the Dog Pound, Hard Day's Reward, Sold to the Highest Bidder) were enjoyable, too, but overall the stories had a bit too much same-ness or just didn't hit my kinks (or didn't hit them the right way, I guess). (I was open to being shown the draw of water sports, but I didn't have a feeling one way or the other because there was no emotional/mental tie to why the water sports turned the character(s) on.)
I got tired very fast of the auto-self-descriptions which read like an internet profile stats list. And there was this tendency for the writing to kill the suspense with lines like "what he did next surprised me." Those two issues and first person fatigue have me putting the book down before the last two stories - I intend to read them at a later date, but I have other books I'd rather read right now.
I wanted to bump the rating to a 4 for The Executioner's Boy (amazing, amazing tale!), but I needed more emotional tie to the sex overall in the volume. April 4, 2015I'm not rating this because I enjoyed the first story which was very visceral. The rest of the book (as much as I read anyway) was a disappointment for me. The stories are most definitely kinky but I prefer my kink to come with romance and some level of shared respect. Instead I found the stories veered towards humiliation and were a little chilling so much so that I lost the drive to keep reading and perhaps find another story more to my tastes.

I enjoyed the stories but I really hate anthologies. I just really prefer a full length novel. I had to read this for a challenge so don't base my opinion on the author or the book. If you enjoy M/M bdsm stories than this book is for you. Most of the stories are told from the sub's point of view. This was a very steamy read, what true erotica should be.
