When Thomasine Lambert moves to a peaceful country village, she discovers that her new close-knit world seethes with romance, intrigue, and even violence. What is Tom White's secret and sinister trade? Why does a champion dog breeder find her reputation and livelihood under threat? When the vet spurns his housekeeper's affections, what terrible revenge does she plan? Anita Burgh's blockbusting new novel is peopled with a vivid cast of characters that will ensure Breeders a special place in the heart of readers everywhere.
Anita Burgh was born in Kent. She began to write in her late forties and was first published at the age of 50. She has subsequently had 23 novels published, numerous articles and short stories. Her themes are those of class, rejection and wealth. She writes books set in the modern world but also historical novels set in Victorian and Edwardian times – her latest being The Cresswell Inheritance trilogy. She has been a member of the RNA for many years, was a committee member and has been short-listed for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year award. Now in her 70s, she enjoys teaching and mentoring others who are, as yet, unpublished. She continues to write novels, proving that authors never retire.
This book immediately draws you into other peoples lives and makes you want to know more! A delightful romp through the countryside with an array of characters for you to love, hate and want the best for! I would say its a similar style but slightly tamer than Jilly Cooper. Lost a star for getting a bit cheesy and predictable at the ending.
This was quite good but it lost a star for its over-reliance on coincidence and cheesy ending. Thomasine moves to the country when her husband leaves her for a younger woman; driving home one night she sees a bulldog being thrown out of a car on the motorway. She takes her home and decides to keep her, thereby getting involved with the local doggy community. Meanwhile, a young RSPCA officer is investigating rumors of dog fighting, a wealthy would-be writers' dog goes missing, and a teenager leaves home to escape her brutal father who farms puppies in appalling conditions. There's a good cast of characters and some evil villains, and lots of dogs. Some of the animal cruelty was very hard to read about, and I had a problem with a 17 year old having a relationship with a 26 year old, but other than that I enjoyed it.
I didn't really wanted to read this in the first place because the cover didn't get me interested. But since they always say to not judge a book by its cover, I gave it a chance. Disappointed though to say that I was right about my first impression. Boring, I found this book just plain boring. Too many character introductions, too many non relevant things, too many dogs. The last one I could expect, since it is a book about dogs, but bloody hell it just wouldn't stop. I really disliked it, and am sad that the summary on the back doesn't portray the book as it truly is. Conclusion: read this book, only if you're a 110% dog lover, otherwise just spare yourself the drama and time.
