Oh, Scott. Scott, what have you done? And why? Please, come and sit down. Let's have a talk. I have a few questions for you. Are you OK?
Uglies is one of my all-time-favourite books. When I say this, it means a lot. I mean that that book shaped me into the person I am today. Literally. I am saying that Uglies influenced the choices I have made in my life to a significant degree. I was 15 when I first read it, I am now 29 years old and it still influences me. Especially in 2023 when people on social media platforms such as Instapoop, TokShit, etc. celebrating the superficial and empty - unironically - have become normalcy (cringe). I swear, sometimes I don't feel like I belong to humanity. If you are an adult, straight male, why are you using social media? Please, just shut up and sit down. Nobody cares.
But I digress.
Point being, I detest that shit. I loved that Uglies explored the idea of a dystopian future in which nobody was without plastic surgery. When you turn 16 you get transformed. Doesn't that sound wonderful? No? Because it's creepy as fuck. I remember a scene in Uglies where our main character Tally finds an old magazine from our time, and for the first time she sees a middle-aged, adult female without plastic surgery, and she is shocked. She has never seen someone natural above the age of 15 before. That scene stayed with me. I frequently think about that. Because it is horrifying, and also slowly becoming our reality.
Ugh! The whole series was genius. And now, reading Extras I tried not to have many expectations as I had heard bad things about it, but obviously I cannot not have expectations, because hello? It is (sort of) a spin-off of my beloved Uglies, Pretties, Specials trilogy.
I was so disappointed. The writing and worldbuilding was lackluster, the language that the character's were using cringe, the unrealistic Japanese names gave me goosebumps - pure American-thinks-this-is-how-Japanese-people's-names-sound-like-kind-of-horror -, the characters were all unlikeable and stupid, the plot makes zero sense and is extremely hard to follow, etc., etc.
Aya, who is our main character here, is incredibly stupid. I know that Tally in the beginning of Uglies was also stupid, don't get me wrong. But Tally went through a carefully crafted, believable, and intense character development over the course of three books, she became a heroine. I fucking loved her. Aya on the other hand? She is superficial, boring, selfish, addicted to the fame, just overall a bore. Zero self-awareness, or reasoning for why she wants the fame so bad. What it would mean to her, how her insecurities influence her decisions. This could have been a wonderful opportunity to make a statement, to influence the next generation of young teenagers into questioning their actions, their desires... but no.
At the end of the book I still didn't get it. I didn't get what the fuck just happened, and why Aya was still dumb, and - WORST OF ALL - Scott Westerfeld brought back Tally, but no, no, no. Not the Tally that we all know and love. He introduced us to asshole-Tally. She was rude, had no heart, and just didn't feel like Tally at all. What the fuck was that for, Scott? Do you hate your fanbase? What did we do to deserve this?
I could go on for so much longer, but my fingers hurt from typing, and I will stop. Just one last question to the author: Why?
