The dance battles continue. Kabe gets a little off balance from all the chips on his shoulder, but Kabo is not exactly a slouch any more. With a showdown with Iori awaiting the winner, who will come out on top?
I don’t think I actually care about what Wandance has to say as long as the visuals continue to be so incredibly stylized and unlike anything I’ve seen in manga. Every volume just flies by like my eyeballs have been let loose in the eye candy store.
Luckily it does have things to say, even if those things are certainly not the focus of this particular volume. I mean, we hash some stuff out on the dance floor, but competition is king this time around.
And it might be slightly hypocritical to laud Wandance‘s entire volume of battles when I’d be more than happy to ding a typical shonen manga actionfest for same, but boy does this ever blow them away with its literal choreography. Maybe more shonen fights should be set to ‘Canned Heat’ by Jamiroquai (they should).
Most of the character work is actually reserved for Kabe, the breakdancing boy wonder who spends a large part of this volume filling the villain role for our leads. He has, as I said, massive chips on his shoulder and positively hates Iori’s switch to house style after a traumatic incident with baby powder (trust me, in context it astonishingly makes perfect sense).
Even with his reasons, Kabe is also the epitome of the kid with attitude because he’s scared to death behind it and all the skill and swagger can’t make up for that. Then again, mild spoiler, this is one of those manga that isn’t afraid to let its lead fail and I respect the hell out of that.
If there is a major flaw this volume, it’s that Kabo eventually gets sidelined for a lot of it, though his stutter remains an impairment with his relationship with Wanda. At least on his side. I am dying to see the team battles coming up because I imagine those two are about to explode.
I really love this story and even without knowing a waltz from a cha-cha it’s easy to get behind this much energy when it’s conveyed so well. This volume is 90% dance floor and it still captivates. Honestly, this is one of the rare manga that I hope goes for twenty volumes because I enjoy it so much. Some of the visuals in this section are nuts.

This one focuses on the secondary characters. We get to see some pretty cool dance moves, and I'm sure Kabo is itching to try em out!

This manga continues to be unlike any other I've seen, and absolutely to its benefit. The energy that comes of performing in a dark room with loud music and an attentive and enthusiastic audience, not to mention the element of competition, comes through perfectly.
There didn't seem to be as many songs cited in this one as in previous volumes, but it makes sense since individual dance battles were presented in greater length and with more detail.
The basic beats (pun intended) of this story are very "shonen manga," but this one's art makes it unique among the other very straightforward titles in that category that I have on my shelves: Inu Yasha, One Piece, et al. I could see the shonen manga bones underneath the incredibly stylized art a little better than I could in previous volumes, so this gets four stars. But that shouldn't be a deterrent. If you enjoy manga at all, this title is absolutely worth a look (and a listen on your favorite music streaming platform).
I don't get your whole thing about dancing without thinking. If you don't think about how you're moving, then you're pretty much, like, an invertebrate, right? Just flopping around.The characters' styles and shortcomings are major focuses in this volume. Kabo's relative inexperience and natural skill, Iori's intuitive approach (that Kabeya mocks in a flashback, above), Kabeya's technical skill and dedication to his dancing, to the point of thinking that injury is an acceptable price to pay (this is the third time I've seen a teenaged character with a false tooth or teeth in manga. What's going on here?).

This whole volume just oozes style. The art is fantastic! This volume is almost entirely made up of dance battles with tiny bits of backstory thrown in. Much like Blue Lock, the action is so dynamic and captivating that even if I know nothing about dancing, I'm sucked in regardless.

First volume listening to the specified tracks in the background while reading. It was fun, but not sure if it's worth the time to look them up individually. 😅

I love this series so much! I can't wait to read the next one. This one is in the thick of a dance competition, there discussion of music styles and moving the body, understanding dynamics of music as well as battling .... love, love, love!
