Rate this book
Paul James Manafort Senior and his son were close.
Paul Junior idolized his father, and his father called him P.J.
Junior's grandfather, James Manafort immigrated to the United States from Italy after World War I. The name Manafort means "strong hand" in Italian, and the family takes their Italian roots seriously. James founded New Britain House Wrecking, a company that still operates today, known as Manafort Bros. Construction.
After World War II, Paul Sr. returned from the army and joined the company with his father and three brothers, serving as secretary-treasurer. His marriage to Antoinette Ciafulu produced three boys. Paul Jr., the eldest, was born in 1949, Robert in 1953, and Dennis in 1957. Robert died in 1988, and Dennis remained at the company his grandfather founded.
Manafort Bros. was a first responder after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, sending employees and demolition equipment to locate survivors. Five years later, this patriotism helped the company when they were fined for committing fraud on a state construction project.
Paul Senior had a corrupt and colorful career in Connecticut politics, died in 2013, and had a long and impressive obituary checkered with sins of omission.
Since Junior became the focus of the press, there has been a movement in New Britain to remove a street sign named Paul J. Manafort Drive next to Central Connecticut State University. The current mayor tried to appease the complainants by adding Sr. to the sign to distinguish it from his son. However, some familiar with the sins of the father want it removed.
The politician father of Paul Manafort Jr. was a very busy man.
