This was the picture that inspired the original short story A Ticklish Problem written for 2011's Hot Summer Days event:
I had no idea the author William Cooper had expanded the story until he contacted me. Totally excited to revisit Jae and Kai, I bought the book and pretty much devoured it in one sitting. Everything I loved about the original story was in this version, but better.
For His Love is still that sweet and sexy little gem of a love story that asks nothing more of the reader than to have a warm, fuzzy heart. I just couldn't help rooting for these young college guys, especially Kai, whose uber-traditional father had serious issues with homosexuality, to the point of putting his other son Li out of the house for being gay, little knowing his eldest had hs own secret life. There was also an interesting inter-cultural aspect since Jae was Korean and Kai was Chinese (something else Kai's father wasn't thrilled with).
Both Kai and Jae were strong, sympathetic characters who'd bern friends since their schooldays (I love friends to lovers stories). And while they were obviously very smart, they were written not as the typical brainiac Asian stereotype. They were studious but also playful. Cooper did not stereotypically feminize either man (something that tends to happen more than it should within the m/m genre). I hope there will eventually be more to the story, because there's plenty to work with.
This is a sweet story about two college boys who are together since their senior year in high school. Kai grew up in an ultraconservative family and struggles a lot with being gay and living in a relationship. Jae on the other hand had more luck with his family although he didn´t tell them that he is gay, either. Together they struggle to be an item in private as well as in public.
I really liked Jae´s patience with Kai, although at one time he was too understanding for my liking. I wanted to have more discussions between the main characters here, because I think Kai´s behaviour was just dumb and he needed to apologize a lot more. Nonetheless, Jae lets Kai set the pace in their relationship in all regards. After being together for two years, that´s when this book starts, they “only” hold hands and share kisses. As the story progresses you can watch Kai come out of his shell and start being a grown up, making decisions and living with the consequences.
I said it before this is a sweet story, but sometimes it was a little too much for me. I also could have done without the repetitive blowjobs. Nothing wrong with going slow but I don´t need the same every few pages.
Overall this is a nice story. Not all parts were working for me, but if you´re looking for a quick sweet read you should give this one a try.
For His Love is the first gay romance I’ve tried and it definitely made me want more! The story is not only super sexy, but has a lot of heart too. Jae and Kai are romantic, empathetic characters and I definitely want to see more from these two. William Cooper made me really feel for this couple, and kept me guessing as well!
This was a great novella that really was the perfect starting point for trying out the gay romance subgenre. I’ll be back for more!
I loved how Kai's need to protect his little brother Li, with Jae's support, allowed him to find his own inner strength to both come out and stand up to his (their) father. Thank you for writing this story William.
Wonderful story! Loved the supporting relationships all around, between Kai and Jae as well as Kai and his brother Li. I also loved that they didn't rush things along. Really sweet and just right:) Thank you!!!
I can't believe I finally read this, lol. This has been on my TBR for so long. Jae and Kai are sweet, and boy do I understand about Asian families! ;) This wasn't full of angst, it's short and simple. Very easy to read, definitely a hopeful ending! :)
Don't know what happened to my first review I left, but I thought this was a sweet story, and I liked that they were Asian...you don't read that very often.
