Endure the devastation following a hurricane in the salt marshes along the Connecticut coast with a young buck under the September moon. Search for food with an alligator in the Florida Everglades as the October moon rises. Trek through the Alaskan tundra with a pack of wolves as the November moon selects its survivors. Jean Craighead George wrote over eighty popular books for young adults, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and the Newbery Honor book My Side of the Mountain. Most of her books deal with topics related to the environment and the natural world. While she mostly wrote children's fiction, she also wrote at least two guides to cooking with wild foods, and an autobiography, Journey Inward.

The mother of three children, (Twig C. George, Craig, and T. Luke George) Jean George was a grandmother who joyfully read to her grandchildren since the time they were born. Over the years Jean George kept one hundred and seventy-three pets, not including dogs and cats, in her home in Chappaqua, New York. "Most of these wild animals depart in autumn when the sun changes their behaviour and they feel the urge to migrate or go off alone. While they are with us, however, they become characters in my books, articles, and stories."

I really enjoyed this book. We took it out of the nonfiction section of the Children's library area, and have been reading it nightly over the past 2 weeks. Liam has enjoyed it as well. This book provides a look at a moon's timeframe in the life of 3 different animals - a young buck in CT in September (during a hurricane!), an alligator in the FL Everglades in October, and a wolf pack in Alaska in November.

The writing is at a good level for Liam and he is fascinated by animals and nature. I read all of this one to him, but I think we'll have him read at least one story in each of the rest of the books to us.

Ms. George has put out 3 other seasonal nonfiction books: Winter Moon, Spring Moon and Summer Moon; we will look for all 3 at the library.
