Kai and Harper are the definition of toxic. Their relationship is intense, volatile, and passionate.

Laura Lovett did the undoable (is that actually a word?)! I do not read cheating books. Let me say that again: I DO NOT read cheating books. I don’t know what it was about Old Habits that called to me, but there was no stopping myself. I still don’t like cheating books and, if I’m honest, probably won’t pick up another one. That said, there’s no denying, how much I love an obsessed hero and Kai is o.b.s.e.s.s.e.d. to the nth degree. He and Harper were toxic and wrong, but so so right.

“I want to scream and cry and slap him, but I can't stop. I want this. He's my drug. I'm crazy for him.”

This is a very short tale about two toxic people that deserve each other… and I gobbled the first 70% down like chocolate pudding, but then it started to stall a bit for me.

The book opens with the h (Harper) going to confront her BF's (Kai) sidepiece when she learns that the OW (Violet) is actually the fiancée and she is the sneaky link. She’s devastated and heartbroken but can’t quit him.

Their love is not healthy, but it was entertaining to watch… until it stopped moving forward and we started repeating the same argument/actions.

It’s really short, but I still wish the author would’ve dug a little bit… like

Bottom Line- Ok trashy romance read that could’ve been great had the author written a couple conversations instead of having everything based on sex.

Safety- Not safe. He has a fiancée that I (and the h) assume he’s sleeping with as well, but she never confirms with him. He slaps her a couple times and is rough with her.

Safety info:
I skimmed through it.
H is engaged with ow when the story starts. The first chapter is h going to their house and realizing that he was engaged and she was his side chick.
H was sleeping with both at the same time. Ow is nice and when h told her about H and her, ow breaks the engagement. She has more spine than our heroine. Before breaking the engagement H told ow that it was over between him and h.
He was in love with ow but was obsessed with h, thought he could f h once and get her out of his system. Turns out he become more obsessed. We don’t know if he would have break the engagement if not because both found out. We don’t know if H would have left ow for h. Ow was the one breaking the relationship. h is jealous and scared and doesn’t trust him because of this and because of obvious lies.
H told ow that he wasn’t ready to start a family, but with h he wants to get her pregnant

Maybe in the next book we will know more about all because the heroine is this ow

Jena recommended not reading it and I should have listened. Plus the author had a very nice and succinct trigger warning note (no sarcasm) at the beginning of the book I should have listened to as well.

"I met my soulmate when I’d already promised forever to someone else."

This was on the short side, and I devoured it. The end came too soon for my liking. I wanted more. Still, I completely enjoyed it. It was…different, but good. The writing flowed flawlessly. The main characters hooked me instantly. Their relationship is undeniably toxic but I was game. It’s not a safe read. As the
author states in her trigger warnings, if you don’t like “toxic book boyfriends” this book is not for you. Me? I love them 🥰 In fiction, of course.

The kinks were hot in this one. Kai was my kind of crazy alpha.

If only their story continued, I’d give it 5 Stars. I just felt like it wasn’t enough, like there was more to tell! 😭 But I suppose that only shows how hooked I was on the characters. The problem is I wasn’t prepared for how short it was, I didn’t check the print length (110 pages). My bad. I’m rounding up the rating. I hope the author continues with the series and writes more about Kai and Harper.

Cheater H.
He has sex with ow and the h both at the same time.
He’s in love with ow, but is obsessed with the h.
This author obviously doesn’t know the meaning of love.

The ow dumps his ass for cheating on her with the h, and the Doormat h gets stuck with his cheating ass.

Little bit disappointed

Ok so first I want to say I like the cheating trope. With that being said Harper seemed to be to much of a pushover. Seriously she was with him for 8 months and the whole time she was the other women. At least Violet had the decency to leave him. She was with him for years and if he could do that to her then what makes Harper think he won't do it to her? Seriously!

He didn't even ask for forgiveness he demanded it and Ms. Harper no backbone just goes along with it. Their connection seemed only to be sexual, I mean the first true conversation they had was about his father.

I was introduced to Laura Lovett's writing through a cowrite with another author I adore. I really really liked Old Habits . Kai and Harper were so delicious and had the most addicting and toxic relationship! Pure kindle crack goodness!

Overall, this story was sexy and engaging. I found Kai and Harper to be sexy and their storyline compelling. I thought their passion and intensity was pure fire and wish there was more to their story!! I will add, though, that while I really enjoyed this story, I would have loved more of an emotional connection between them. We received Kai's perspective but I feel like we never really felt his emotions for Harper or the reason why he did what he did (no spoilers.) Furthermore, I would have liked to have seen more of a fight from Harper. Real Talk: He did her dirty, so I would have liked to see more grovel vs. a "this is how it's gonna be from now on, and you need to deal with it." LOL. Don't get me wrong, they were sexy and toxic af but I would've liked to have seen a ramp up of emotional intensity towards the end.

Now I can't wait to get Violet (and Zane's?) story! 4 stars! ~Ratula

It starts off rough but once you get past the first few chapters it’s really not that dark. The MMC is cheating on two women. The FMC is technically the OW only because she didn’t know that the MMC has a prior commitment to someone else. The FMC is Harper and she has only been with the MMC less than a year. Meanwhile, the real OW is the MMC’s fiancé Violet. Violet has been with the MMC for about a seven/eight years.

So the story opens with Harper going to violet’s house to find out the truth about the MMC. Meanwhile she is mentally making all these comparisons to herself. I totally feel for her because she really didn’t know that the MMC had made her the side piece. She didn’t know there was anyone else in the picture.

It’s never addressed if this was even a question that was asked by Harper of the MMC when they met. Did he outright lie to hide his relationship status to Harper or did it conveniently never come up and with his shady job a lot of his absences were easily ignored? So it could still be harpers fault if she never bothered to ask the most basic of getting to know you questions in the dating world.

Anyway, they have a kink more than a toxic relationship. It costs Harper her before the MMC friends, as people always sit in judgment of other’s but never themselves. In this intense relationship now that Harper knows about violet all we get from the MMC is that he is not letting Harper go. We don’t get his POV of how he is handling getting caught, other than he is still choosing violet over Harper in a few key moments in the beginning.

After Harper confronts violet, violet later confronts Harper and so violet states that the MMC told her that it was over with Harper. All while we see the MMC telling Harper nothing changes between them. Violet also states that during all their years together the MMC never wanted children as he wasn’t ready. Violet also reveals that the MMC is so protective of her because violet is so irresistible to men that on more than one occasion men have tried to abduct her. This is where I’m like aha(!), the author is going to go with the premise that while the MMC may have love for the OW/Violet he is with her out of duty and not for passion and true love.

I was later proven correct as the story continued when the MMC finally gets his POV chapters and he basically states that once he rescued the OW/Violet the first time that’s what his relationship primarily was with her but with love that was restricted. He was her protector not her partner no matter what future they were actively planning with each other. And so, once the OW/Violet takes herself out of the equation that’s when the MMC commits completely to the FMC/Harper.

I’m not a fan of this because it comes off that the MMC never actively chooses Harper over violet. Violet made it easy by walking away. There is a side character Zane who tries to make it seem like the fact that the MMC behaved out of his character by cheating to be with Harper that it was at that point that he chose Harper and he was always going to be with her. But I disagree with the author on this plot point. Other than actively becoming a cheater with the intention of just burning off his desire for Harper the MMC never did anything that would indicate he was going to leave the OW/Violet to be with the FMC/Harper. He was telling Violet he was done with Harper but telling Harper they would stay the same.

Honestly, in none of the MMC’s POV chapters does he acknowledge or explain how he thought this was going to end. Was he planning on living a double life forever? He later is actively trying to knock up the FMC/Harper without any true contrition or any groveling for forgiveness. Mostly because these two characters are not the “sorry” kind of people but mostly because this story is too short for that kind of effort to be in it. And because the author has the FMC/Harper too desperate to be loved by a man that gives her this kink they share that she just accepts him back with barely any fight. But yet we the reader are lead to see this as his wanting it all with Harper and never having wanted that with violet as his form of love and faith to Harper.

I liked parts of this story, I liked the kink although it could have been placed in another part of the story and not at the beginning. I liked some if not all of there toxic draw to each other. I disliked that the OW/Violet was so easy. If she had loved him and was committed to their future than she should have had more of a reaction in this story. Even if she did back down and move on, on her own eventually. The shock of finding out that the man you’ve been with for the better part of ten years would dictate more of a reaction. I would have liked to see that confrontation too but we don’t. I also disliked that the MMC has some extremely bad communication issues. With both women. Half the book goes by before we get his POV and it’s barely satisfactory. His POV’s barely acknowledge what has happened but doesn’t give us his thoughts on the choices he has made in his recollections, only that he felt bad about it. Yeah, that wasn’t nearly enough.

And the story ends explaining his parents situation while he try’s to give her his fraternal grandparents house, but in the beginning of the book the FMC states that they had both grown up rough on the streets. His story and her statement don’t mesh. He was raised by at least his mother or at most by two sets of grandparents and his mother. So his tough up bringing on the streets doesn’t flow with this. Or why he was even telling any of this terrible story of his parents to the FMC/Harper. Like I said above, so much is not addressed or acknowledged or it is clearly a continuity issue.

I want to read more by this author but I think she still needs to up her game. She has promise but too much is missing for me to say it was a good story. The content warning page also mentions a seashore series by this author but I can’t find it anywhere. I would have liked to check it out but, oh well. Good luck.

Short novella where two worthy women get take in by a louse.
Kinda madonna/wh*re thing - and for once the fmc is the W.

Hot kinky or bdsm sex is fine, but physical abuse and complete control outside the bedroom?

Still, it begins strong when the fmc comes a knocking on her rival's door - all bruised and split-lipped - only to learn that she herself is the ow in the sob's life.
But from thereon, it wimps out.

What I liked: I loved how Harper(h) went to confront fiancé not knowing anything. I liked how she didn’t take her anger out on her. I also liked that the fiancé wasn’t a bad person.

What I didn’t like: I wanted to read the part when Kai(H) went and talked to his fiancé after Harper went to her. It almost made it sound like he was trying to keep them both and because of that I didn’t get that he loved Harper more. He says he does but because I didn’t read that interaction it made me think that Harper was just the one that was easily manipulated. I also hated how Kai treated Harper when he was the one cheating. He should have been begging on his knees.

***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: Cheating, Toxic relationship. h goes to a house to confront ow. She believes ow is cheating with the H. Unfortunately, h finds out that she is the side piece and ow is the H’s fiancé and they been together for 7 years when the h has been with him for 8 months. H tells the fiancé I’m to shut the door. h goes home and later H shows up and he basically tells her to get over it and that he won’t let her leave him. They have rough sex. H leaves the next day and h doesn’t see him for a couple of days. H’s fiancé shows up at the h’s job. While talking the fiancé tells the h that the H’s told her that him and h are over. Fiancé asks the h to go to lunch with her and they set up at day. H makes the h pull over and they argue when she is driving. H tells h that he loves her and they have sex again. He tells her that he doesn’t want her to go to lunch with the fiancé but h goes anyway. The now ex fiancé tells her that she is leaving. h goes to a bar to pick up a random guy but the H shows up and stops her. He reminds her that she is his and if she cheats on him he will kill the man. He takes her home. h tells him how much he hurt her. H drops her off and comes back later. They have sex and again tells her that she is stuck with him. He also tells her she is his soulmate. He explains that when he meet her that he knew he had to have her. He thought he could get the h out of his system but he couldn’t. He thought he could have both especially if he wasn’t sure the h was the one. He tells the h he would never cheat on her and he wants to have a baby with her. He proceeds to get rid of the h’s birth control. We finally get a chapter with his point of view letting the h know that he will be back at 8 and him seeing his ex fiancé. H tells her not to leave so he can keep her safe and she can have the house. She leaves anyway. H and h get their HEA with the h pregnant and them moving into the H’s grandparents house that they gave him.

Descriptive Sex: Yes

Final thoughts: This was my first book by this author and I will definitely check out more from her. Especially if they are quick reads like this one.

So freaking good. A cheating romance where the antihero does not grovel, but he’s redeemable… well, he sorta coerces the heroine into accepting him because she’s truly his soulmate, and he loves her.

This was a spicy novella with light dark themes. No on-page cheating, but it did happen. The H was a bad boy with BDE, on the wrong side of the law, and he was crazy about his girl even while he was cheating on her… for a while. However, this was more they were cheating with each other than the antihero wanting to be with two women and betray them.

The book starts out with the heroine going to the fiancée’s house and takes off from there. Quite of bit of telling what they’re thinking and what’s happening, happened, than something more organic you would get out of a longer story, but I still loved it. I hate a lot of backstory. And no, we don’t really get a lot of depth into the looks of the two main characters, just their appealing features. We do know what the other woman and potential other man look like.

I can’t stand groveling, and it would have been out of character for Kai. So dang good. Need more books like this.

- I’m a little nervous knowing there’s cheating but I figure it’s short so I can deal with it. I’m too intrigued
- ok so hopefully it’s not cheating between the main characters
- this is the only time I’ve ever wanted the FMC to fuck someone else than the MMC
- I really wanna see something happens that shows she’s NOT the consolation prize. Seriously what was his plan?
- I mean if was short and there was only so much to put it. I do wish I got more info about his plans if Harper never found out about violet. Would he have eventually broke up with violet? That’s my biggest question. Otherwise it was good. Good writing and I’m definitely gonna read the next book about violet

Where do I begin 😂… I think if I start my epistle about the storyline and characters I will end up giving spoilers. So I rather just keep it short and sweet as always

DNF 10% this story was not just for me. A cheating H that doesn’t grovel or beg. We don’t even know what he looks like 🤣 or what she looks like. No backstory, nothing! 😔. Don’t even get me start on the heroine 😐.. I mean, c’monnnn.

I definitely haven’t ever read a book like this before. I had my reservations going in, for sure. To me, a messy romance screams out that this will be the type of angst that I don’t like.
I’m ultimately glad I read this though. It worked for me in a lot of ways.

I really enjoyed this author as a writing partner for Sophie’s Surrender with co- author Sam Mariano. Sam is my absolute favorite author point blank period. I didn’t want to go out of my way to read a story that I knew had content I would hate and end up disliking the book. That’s not fair to the author. If you know a book has things in it you’ll hate then don’t read it and write a hate manifesto review when you know good and we’ll you shouldn’t have read it in the first place. That’s just unnecessarily mean. It’s like eating a plate of spicy food at a restaurant that only serves spicy food and then getting angry and leaving a bad review for the restaurant because you don’t like spicy food. No one made you eat it. No one made you read a book that you know might trigger you.

So H is involved with h for 8 months. The book opens with h going to visit the H’s fiancée she hadn’t been aware of. It’s never explained how she learned of the fiancée but I don’t care because why does that matter? If you found out your partner was cheating would you be more concerned about how you found out or that they were cheating? I appreciate being dropped into the thick of it. Getting to the meat of it immediately. It’s a heartbreaking scene because she realizes she is the OW here and in that moment H’s concern was focused on the fiancée’s well being. He goes to the fiancée after it happens. Eventually he shows up at h’s place after she’s given up.

We get the impression H is into some shady shit. He found himself in a situation to need to protect the fiancée 7 years earlier and then they got engaged. He’s definitely protective as she seems to be a trouble magnet. He loves her in a platonic way it seemed. He definitely saw her as fragile and needing protection. We only get one scene between H and the fiancée. She’s done with him obviously and he’s definitely more relieved than upset. He’s still concerned for her safety but definitely relieved that their relationship is over. He realizes that he won’t even be able to maintain a friendship with her because of how this has played out. The entire scope of the relationship was him protecting her and he feels bad that he’s hurt her. He literally thinks he’s not good enough for the fiancée or h but is too obsessed with h to let her go while he can walk away from the fiancée with fair ease.
I think his entire desire to keep relationship with fiancée at first is so she’ll continue to allow him to protect her and not because he wanted a romantic relationship.

With h, he’s completely different. Their relationship is visceral. Losing her is not an option. He literally threatens to kill any man she dares let touch her. He does apologize verbally a time or two but there is zero groveling. I think this comes across as him not feeling remorseful but I don’t think that is true. I think he feels remorse but his primary concern is making sure h doesn’t get away and he’s prepared to show his feelings for her and remorse in a “I’ll make it up to you” kind of way than a groveling. As much a I love a good grovel this just wouldn’t work for his character or this story. You can feel his obsession for h radiating from the page. He’d never cheated on the fiancée before but he was so drawn to h. He thought he could bang her once and get it out of his system but it made him even more obsessed.

The reason I went with 4 stars is mostly because I needed more story. Not concerning the fiancée just more between H/h. A deeper dive into their life and dynamic. I’d definitely read another book about this couple!

Fast burn

No condoms between H/h
He dumps her birth control
OW drama
Mild OM drama
No separation
No scenes with others
No cliffhanger
HEA

Safety - obviously h is OW here so not super safe. We presume H has maintained his physical relationship with fiancée but it’s never overtly confirmed that I noticed. We never see any sex or affection on page between H and fiancée.

The h tries to find an OM but H intercedes with kicking his ass and threatening to kill any OM she let’s touch her. Tge h isn’t impressed.

A messy romance is right. This was a short, toxic, drama novella. I didn’t connect to their version of love but they seemed to get each other 🤷🏻‍♀️. I would have liked to have more out of both of them. Would have liked her to fight him more, although he really did make things hard for her. I would have liked a few more answers from him. There were things missing that kept this from really working for me. I didn’t have any expectations and it’s a novella so I’m not upset that certain things didn’t work though. It is what it is, which kind of felt like the Hs stance too 😵‍💫. I would have liked this more had the H picked the h before she found out that he was engaged.

“I was the fucking side chick. I just didn’t know it.”

“I’d sell my fucking soul to have you, Harper. Don’t you get it? It was hers, but I had to fucking have you. No future I planned with someone else could stop me.”

In my opinion, this book was much better than "Sophie's surrender," which I found to be an awfully dull read.

That being said, the book does contain what is a dealbreaker for most romance readers: a hero who cheated on the heroine and doesn't really feel remorse, or not enough.

For my part: I am sometimes in the mood for drama, toxic relationships aren't healthy, but in fiction they can provide an entertaining story. And I won't lie, it was damn entertaining.

The problem I had with the romance is strangely not so much that the hero cheated on the heroine (and his ex-fiancee) since I knew what to expect.

The hero's feelings were not clear enough and I wish the heroine wouldn't forgive so easily. It's one thing to have a hero who is unfaithful, but for me to believe in their HEA, I need to see the hero standing up for her.

Old Habits isn’t the first published work by Lovett, but it is her first solo; the previous was a co-write and a piece in an anthology. Why am I saying this? It’s simple. I’m blown away. completely and wholeheartedly amazed.

Be sure to read the warning. Honestly, if you are a person who needs trigger warnings, this is probably not the book for you. This relationship is toxic. It’s not okay in real life. But these are fictional characters soooo…..

If you’re looking for a new toxic book boyfriend that you know you should hate but definitely don’t, get that one-click finger ready. Kai’s the villain in this story, but he’s not going to allow anyone else the chance to have her, and I assure you he doesn’t care what your thoughts on book boyfriend redemption stories are.

Please keep in mind that this is a short read, but don’t let that deter you. It’s super steamy, but it’s more than that; my eyes couldn’t consume the words fast enough.

Harper and Kai have atomic bomb levels of chemistry, and at times they leave a level of devastation in their wake that might rival one. They push one another over the edge every chance they get, but they are also the only ones able to pull one another back to safety.

I don’t want to give anything away, but I can’t wait for the next book. I’m in love with this world Lovett has created, and I’m really looking forward to finding out who the next toxic book boyfriend in the series is.

Old Habits is brimming with white hot steam and an all consuming story that will have you glued to your kindle from the first word to the last. I’m looking forward to falling in love with more of Lovett’s villains and seeing her continue to storm her way into the dark romance world.

toxic love

Quick but toxic love book. I think the end kind of felt rushed but I enjoyed the story. I would definitely read more by this author.
