Hailey Patterson has a history of arson, murder, and revenge. Are the "shadows" that she sees a ploy invented to keep her out of jail? Or is she being controlled by a malevolent "other"?
To rid ourselves of our shadows – who we are – we must step into either total light or total darkness ~Jeremy Preston
Hailey has been in and out of trouble since she can remember thanks to the shadows that surround her. Swirling around whispering to her, telling her things no child should/could know. After losing both parents at a very young age, one being under controversial circumstances, Hailey is forced in and out of foster homes throughout the rest of her childhood & teen years. Now institutionalized, this young woman becomes the intrigue of Dr. Adam Bennett and the focus of his book. Will Dr. Bennett’s interviews help Hailey open up about the shadows and reveal the truth?
Lori Titus is a returning author to Doubleshot Reviews. Back in September I reviewed Lori’s western zombie tale, Lazarus and really enjoyed it. Her latest novella, that I have been given the pleasure of reading, is Hailey’s Shadow and it did not disappoint. I’ll start with the negative…Hailey’s Shadow is too short and by that I mean, I wanted more; I didn’t want it to end. There are only two main characters, Dr. Bennett and Hailey, and they were very believable and engaging. I loved the interactions and conversations between them. I would have, honestly, read this in one night it is so engaging, but I realized what time it was, so I was forced to go to bed and finish it the next night. I would love to see what Lori Titus would come up with should she choose to revisit the world of Hailey’s Shadows.
Hailey’s Shadow is not available for purchase at this time, but I have been told that it is coming soon and will do a follow-up to let the you, our readers, know.
We are taught to overcome our fears and doubts, to take charge of them along with our life. But can it go too far? And will to far can land you in the crazy house? As a child, Hailey is haunted by shadows with teeth, by shadows with secrets. Nobody believes her. She keeps the shadows away with fire and earns the title of pyromaniac and murderer, but is she? Dr. Adam Bennett wanting to write a book and get to the truth, quickly finds he and Hailey share a bond, an uncomfortable link. He presses on with their interviews and discovers the truth was better left unheard, and Hailey’s shadows better left in the dark. Lori Titus pushes the edge of darkness in this one, don’t let the lights go out.
Talk about unexpected horror and a woman scorned! Hailey seemed to come out of nowhere and wreck havoc. I love how the author described the situation and setting of how it was a question of who was controlling who . Great job Lori!
