Return of the Blossoming Blade vol 1 contains chapters 1-6 of the webcomic. The volume starts with Cheongmyeong being slayed in a battle and with a fatal blow, he dies. 100 years later, he is reincarnated as a beggar and sets out to find the Mount Hua Sect and learn what happened. What will he meet when he arrives? Another comic my boyfriend introduced me to and I’m happy he did; it’s an interesting journey to get to know Cheongmyeong and the others! Onto the next! Happy reading!♥️
Read: Season 1 & 2 What happens to the world after the war against the great evil was won but all the heroes are dead and gone? The world keep turning and life slips back into its well-carved path. 100 years after he killed the Cheonma, the leader of the Demon sect, Cheongmyeong is reborn again with all the knowledge of his past life but without his former power. Does he remember the Cheonma's claim that the war isn't over and they will meet again? Doesn't matter, first he has to get back to his sect, Mount Hua, back to his training and the only home he ever had but unfortunately his sect is on the decline, nearly at the brink of extinction and far from being one of the 10 great sects of Murim.
This is a shounen manhwa, so the special humor of this subgenre is guaranteed. Can't be anything else seeing the ML being a cocky and unconventional junior, greedy and far from being subserviant as would be expected at the bottom of the hierarchy but indefinitely loyal and a force to be reckoned with. It's fun to watch him fix the sect again and become the blessed dragon of Mount Hua (still cocky, still mouthy and still unorthodox). It's also a wuxia, so the Old China setting is a given as well as fantastic sword techniques and Qi cultivation (Cheongmyeong has to reintroduce Mount Hua with their trademark technique where the fighting energy shows as a whirlwind of plum blossoms). So if that is your kind of humor, this is your webtoon and even the art is perfect for this kind of story.
Season 2 is a bit different. Latest at the sword crypt story line it felt like the series passed its zenith. That part was soulless, full of action but bland and everything was too big and too much and to top it, the artist seemed to become a big fan of Loyd Fronterra and his over-expressive faces. As fun as those are in the original webtoon, here it's a copy and wasn't be needed, at least not that often. I nearly stopped following but everything became good again with the following Poison Clan story line where we get some nostalgic flash backs of Cheongmyeong's first life, some sensitive view on friendship and the worth of promises over the lifetimes and he even cares more about his brothers and his sister to rise and shine. So everything was fine again at the end of season 2.
Your typical weak to strong shounen manhwa except this time its to revive the mc's clan back to what it once was. The pacing was really well done compared to a lot of other manhwa of the same genre and the humor is top notch.
This is so good! The blend of adventure with fantasy and historical elements made this a captivating comic to binge read.
Cheongmyeong of the Mount Hua Sect awakens in the future in a young body. He finds out that Mount Hua Sect no longer has its formal glory but using his second chance at life, he goes on a journey to restore the sect back to its state.
The first volume was fun to read. There was action, drama, and comedic moments that I enjoyed. I am looking forwards to more and will be reading this series until the end.
WHY I CHOSE THIS BOOK This book had been sitting on my very long “want to read” list for so long that it felt like it was collecting dust. I’d seen people talking about the title, art style, and plot all over social media, but I still hadn’t picked it up. But once I started coming across videos about the book, though, I instantly wanted to read it. Seeing it talked about in more detail made everything about it feel even more interesting, and that’s when I finally decided to give it a chance and see what all the hype was about.
SUMMARYThe story follows Cheong-Myeong, an orphan raised within the Mount Hua Sect, which is more than just a place to him — it’s his home. Gifted with incredible talent, he lives carefree, spending his days drinking, fighting, and avoiding responsibility while constantly irritating his senior brothers. At the time, he doesn’t realize how much that life truly means to him. It’s only after everything is taken away that he understands the value of the family, stability, and belonging Mount Hua once gave him.
The story begins with a brutal flashback soaked in red. Cheong-Myeong stands alone, surrounded by the bodies of his sect — his brothers, friends, juniors, and allies — all killed by the Great Demon of the Demon Cult, Cheonma. With only one arm left and one final wish, Cheong-Myeong sacrifices his life to defeat him. As he dies, Cheonma leaves behind a chilling warning: the Demon Cult will return, and the world will eventually fall under its rule. In his final moments, Cheong-Myeong clings to the belief that even if he dies, Mount Hua will survive.
Instead of death, however, he awakens in a new body. Reborn as a poor, dirty, homeless child, Cheong-Myeong is confused and surrounded by other orphans, shocked to realize he is no longer the powerful swordsman he once was. Despite his weak and fragile body, his mind remains unchanged, still holding the memories, skills, and experience of a master swordsman. With that, his goal becomes simple: return to Mount Hua.
When he finally makes it back, reality hits hard. A hundred years have passed since his death, and Mount Hua has completely fallen apart. The sect is poor, starving, and barely holding on, with rude disciples and crumbling buildings replacing its former glory. Refusing to accept this fate, Cheong-Myeong sets out to rebuild Mount Hua — not just by relying on his own strength, but by raising the entire sect together. As rival sects challenge them and old enemies resurface, he proves Mount Hua’s worth through action, slowly restoring its power, reputation, and alliances. No longer known as the Blossoming Blade, he begins to earn a new name — the Blessed Dragon — as he prepares for the eventual return of the Demon Cult.
WHAT WORKS One of the strongest aspects of this story is Cheong-Myeong himself. Even though he’s stuck in the body of a child, his personality stays exactly the same — arrogant, blunt, immature, and overwhelmingly confident. Because of this, the people around him see him as rude and disrespectful, while readers know he’s actually a legendary swordsman with decades of experience. That contrast creates a lot of humor, but it also builds anticipation, especially when his actions finally prove why he’s so confident.
Another major strength is the symbolism of plum blossoms, which are deeply connected to the Mount Hua Sect. The author weaves this imagery into sword techniques, history, and emotional moments throughout the story. Through these scenes, readers catch glimpses of Cheong-Myeong’s past — his senior brothers, their scolding, their arguments, and the warmth he once took for granted. These memories are especially touching when he mentally speaks to his deceased senior brother, who served as a father figure to him. Moments like when he says, “Look, brother — look at what I’m doing,” add a quiet but powerful emotional weight to the story.
Lastly, the language stands out in a really effective way. While it isn’t overly complex, the dialogue feels refined and elegant, which fits the setting perfectly. Since the story centers around wise figures and martial artists, the wording feels intentional without ever becoming confusing or overwhelming. Even when niche terms appear, they enhance the atmosphere rather than distract from it, making the story feel immersive and natural.
WHAT DOESN’T WORK Interestingly, one of the story’s strengths is also where it falls a little short. Although Cheong-Myeong’s guilt and regret are clearly present, they aren’t explored as deeply as they could be. His sorrow mostly appears through brief reflections and memories, but I personally wanted to see more internal struggle — moments where his guilt truly weighs on him. Given how much he lost, his emotional burden sometimes feels slightly understated.
That said, this may come down to personal preference rather than a true flaw. I tend to enjoy stories that dive deeply into emotional conflict. Since this is a webcomic, it’s also possible that the novel version explores these emotions in more depth. Still, a few more vulnerable moments could have added even more emotional impact to an already powerful story.
Chung Myung is really one of those original main characters you could ever read. He made this story 100x better just by being there. His character depth and unpredictable nature fitted exactly in this story's aesthetic. I'm a proud Chung Myung glazer idc.
