Corps Security #6

The Long Way Home

Rate this book
There’s a price to pay for a life with a greater purpose. The healing of time is a damn liar when you’re living a life as a dead man with no true home, and the silence couldn’t be more deafening. Counting the days, good and bad, I exist as the world keeps spinning. I can never look back. All I can do is hope I took enough out of that life to carry me forward on those dead legs. Everything that was meant to give the tragedy of my life meaning ended up holding me prisoner in this wreckage of my past.

Until now.

One look into her eyes and I’m completely disarmed. It’s only everything I thought I gave up. These walls I’ve built to protect and shroud me crumble more whenever she’s near. I’ve spent years waiting for a reason to breathe again, and now that I have her within reach, I’m not sure I can keep her. Is it possible to find both the missing piece of my soul and the remedy to my healing in one set of bright green eyes? Everything I thought I would never have is staring back at me saying … yes, I can.

What can I say about this book aside from it was everything I wanted and more. What a comeback! I was missing Harper’s words, it’s been a while since she published, and she came back with a bang. I was so obsessed with this story.

This review will be short and sweet, because honestly you need to go into this one as blind as possible. I’m glad I did. I knew it had some tie-ins to the Corps Security books, but that’s all. Olivia and Drew’s story was definitely a slow burn romance. Olivia is a single mom to her niece, Riley and owns her own business. Drew is a protector and he’s sticking close to Olivia and Riley for his own reasons.

I loved Olivia and Drew together, but honestly little Riley stole the show so many times. She was the most adorable kid and watching her with Drew, her giant. I melted. This book was so full of heart and I was so happy with how it concluded. This one was such a win, gave me all the feels, and left me with a huge smile on my face. It’s the book I didn’t know I needed, but I’m so happy I got to read it. Long story short, pick this one up! You won’t regret it.

When I saw Harper had a new book coming out I was so excited. And I wanted to read it SO BAD. I mean it’s been FIVE YEARS. I was willing to give anything to read it. I joked I would even give up my firstborn. Which was TOTALLY a joke. I was jealous of those who had read it. SO jealous.

And then Harper messaged me asking if I wanted to read it. I almost had a heart attack. I mean I felt so lucky. Who would say no??? I’m no fool.

Well I read it. And I finished. And I’m SPEECHLESS.

This story. THIS STORY. It’s everything. These boys. This world. It’s like coming HOME. Harper has OUTDONE herself. This is one PHENOMENAL story. One full of emotion and heart. One that brings us back to the beginning. One I devoured.

What a perfect ending to a series that will stay with me forever.

Harper is BACK. And I couldn’t be happier or prouder of her.

I can’t wait for you all to read it. ❤️

This book. Gah! This book. It was EVERYTHING and more. This story broke my heart while simultaneously putting it back together. This is the story everyone of us have been waiting for since the last Corps Security book. Harper left no emotions to spare. I was laughing on one page only to turn the page and have tears rolling down my cheeks. Trust me, you'll go through every emotion possible several times over. This story about heartache and loss was absolutely perfectly written. Drew and Olivia are just perfection. The banter. The love. Just everything...perfection. It's like Harper never skipped a beat after being gone for so long and writing this story. So many old faces show up in this story and it was so nice to catch up with them again.

5 Perfect Ending Stars

What an unexpected surprise this book was. It kind of came out of the blue but it absolutely needed to be written , so thank you Harper Sloan. Thank you for writing a book that will stay with me for a long, long time.

Olivia (35) is a successful business woman who has full custody of her little niece Riley since the death of her sister. Olivia has a thriving coffee shop and a thing for one of her regular customers, Drew.

Drew (52) is very much the tall, brooding, silent type. Everything about him is mysterious and Olivia , whilst crushing on him, may consider him remote and detached but you really need to give those quiet types credit for their underrated observational skills.

I look down at the top of her head. She avoids looking at me, something she does a lot, but usually, it comes with sideway glances she doesn’t think I see. Oh, Olivia Elizabeth Kelley, I fucking see you.

I liked Olivia's character and Riley is a cute little girl (albeit rather articulate for her age). The relationship that builds between Riley and Drew, her 'Giant' , is adorable. She brings out the fun side of him and it does well to temper the lighter glimpses with the darker aspects of the book.

My heart was stolen by , and belongs to , the reserved , passionate and enticing Drew.

I see it in his eyes, but especially the lines on his face that tell me, at one time, this man laughed and laughed hard.

He made this book for me. My heart broke for him and I cried. At one point it was sad tears but mostly happy ones.

I’ve been alone for so long, I had forgotten what it felt like to have someone who had your back out of love, not obligation.

I couldn't bear the thought of him being alone so long. Olivia breathed warmth and happiness back into the dark places his life had taken him and I am so delighted that I got to read this story.

This book will not really work as a standalone. This whole series has been a longstanding favourite of mine and if you enjoy romances with Alpha heroes , strong women and a small town feel to them, then I recommend this whole series highly. Seeing Sway , Axel and Izzy and all the characters from the series was like putting on a favourite old jacket and feeling all warm and content.

HEA? Yes! Absolutely perfect.
Cheating? No

3.5 stars. The Long Way Home is the surprise final book to the Corps Security series, written almost 10 years after the previous book in the series. This is Olivia and Drew's story. Olivia is a new character to the series, while there is a twist and Drew is someone we have met before in a way. I don't want to give too much away, but if you've read the series you may be able to guess what I mean. Olivia is a coffee shop owner who lives in Boston. She is raising her five year old niece, Riley, after her sister's death. Drew is one of her customers, a mysterious, silent type who has been coming in her shop for years. Both of their lives have been shaped by tragedy, but as they spend more time together they develop a strong connection. When both of their pasts come back to haunt them, they are put to the test but come out stronger together in the end.

This book can't be read as a standalone. You must have read the previous books in the series. Maybe I should have reread the series before I read this one, because while I remembered the details, I didn't quite carry over the emotion from the previous books into this book. That made me not feel the emotions of this book as strongly as I feel like I should have. This is all very vague, I know, sorry. But I just didn't feel the strong emotional wrenching from this book that I was expected to. I liked the story in general, but I didn't completely fall in love it or with the characters. Olivia was very sugary sweet, but a little flat and one-dimensional for me. Her niece, Riley, was a five year old that felt more like a ten year old. Her obsession with BTS did not seem age appropriate. Drew was fine. I didn't really feel any chemistry between he and Olivia. Their relationship felt very fast moving, syrupy, instalove.

Still, I did enjoy the book in general, even if I wasn't able to full connect with the characters or emotions. It was fun to revisit the old Corps security characters, although it was hard to imagine them so much older as grandparents. Olivia was only 35, but she never mentions the age differences between them, which seems like it would be slightly awkward. But, overall, I was happy Drew and Olivia found each other and were able to get over their emotional pasts to face a happy future together. They were sweet together and deserved all the goodness coming their way. I am happy to see that Ms. Sloan is writing again and I look forward to new books from her in the future.

Loved, Loved, Loved comeback book by Harper Sloan
This awesomesauce author takes you back to Corps Security with Drew the mysterious, introvert .very much like Olivia, I just had to unravel and untangle this man .
He drags his past behind him, he's lost in a way.
Olivia has had it hard and a little angel to take care of.
The pages were alight with burning Embers of their chemistry. Angst was shooting sky high.
Many a times I felt my throat choke up and heart beating fast.
What a series
What a book.what a comeback.

Ok, so I'm not going to go into any kind of detail, because you should go in blind. I know, I know, I hate it when someone tells me that because I don't mind spoilers, but for this? Please go in blind. And now, to the vague-ish review.

This is Harper Sloan's first book in FIVE years and she definitely came to play. I read her Corps Security series many years ago and loved it, so to say I was pretty excited that she was returning with another book in that series is an understatement. I love revisiting characters from a much loved series, and we get the whole gang in this new one--yes, including Sway who is a favorite of mine and many others.

Speaking of the original crew, this is NOT a stand-alone! It's meant to be read AFTER the Corps Security series. If you haven't read that, go do it now! You'll be confused if you don't!

This book truly felt like a love letter to Harper's Corps Security fans and I just loved it. I had to pace myself so I didn't read the whole thing in one sitting. 🤣 I've missed this world and wanted to hang out with these characters just a little bit longer. This was the story that I didn't know I needed and it left me with a full heart and big smile on my face.

Kudos, Harper Sloan. And welcome home. ❤

10++++ stars for this amazing book! It’s the book all Corps Security fanatics hoped for but knew it was a probably a long shot. But little did we know a plan was afoot for a surprise come back.
And did it deliver! In all it’s magnificent glory it delivers exactly what we all needed….some catch up time with our favorite Corps Security and Hope Town characters! It’s was like folding yourself up in your favorite comfy blanket or sweater and snuggling in with old friends for a catch up and the emotions that go along with it. You can’t help but smile wide at times and let the tears flow at others. You are tense with the suspense and then laughing out loud with someone’s antics. And the steam level is high and it’s perfection!
You definitely feel like you’ve come home to where you belong after being away for a while…..and there’s no where you’d rather be!

Can’t wait for more to happen in Hope Town!

One of my top reads ever!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Harper Sloan is back! This book was everything I needed but didn’t know I needed and then some.

When I saw the email from Harper that I got an ARC I scared my husband with my screech! 🤣

I read Corps Security way back when but seeing them again, their stories came right back to me. This book has all of the feels. There are highs and lows and tears of joy and gut wrenching heart ache. We’re talking Harper Sloan so no there is not shortage of alpha men and the women that bring them to their knees. 😉

🪩✨🪩✨And SWAY!!! 🪩✨🪩✨

If you can, I’d take a day or two off work and tell the fam they are on their own for meals. This book is that good. And the book hangover is just as real!

Its a no from me.

The only saving grace for me was knowing that Cooper was alive. Everything else was a train wreck. Disappointed to be honest.

The repetitiveness was unbearable. I don’t know how many times one’s feelings can be expressed, but with this story it was over and over. I seriously just wanted to skim. But I didn’t. I endured until the end. I’d say eighty percent of the story was the same thing just worded differently.

Over dramatised, nothing worked for me. No chemistry and really no story.

It’s a no from me.

10 years. TEN YEARS. That's how long I've waited for this book. TEN FREAKING YEARS.

To Harper Sloan: I follow you on fb. I knew you on GR before you started writing. I've met you in person at a book signing (you're delightful)...I like you as a person. As an author....I was prepared to hold a grudge for the rest of my life. But then you went and released this book. It doesn't make up for the last 10 years, but I guess we're back on even ground.

I'm not going to spoil this book. IYKYK what I'm talking about, or have an idea. But this book kept me hooked from beginning to end. I'll admit, there was a small part in the middle where it lagged a bit, but it wasn't bad. It was literally Olivia and Drew finding a normal for their life together. I kind of wish there had been some stuff regarding the reason he was protecting Olivia and Bean at that part, but like I said, it wasn't bad and I got through it.

The drama of the the book was definitely personal drama, the suspense part of the story was a secondary storyline. So don't go into this thinking that it's a straight up romantic suspense.

One big thing I noticed about this book is the fact that the author's voice seemed to changed from her old stuff. That's not a bad thing, it seemed to be more...genuine? Maybe mature is the right word? I don't know the best way to say it, but there was a definite change in her writing style and I think it was for the better. Her voice sounds more distinct now than it did before.

One of the best parts of this book was buddy reading it with Nikki. Lol, if you know anything about us, you know we've tried to buddy read many, many times in the past and...well...we haven't done well at it. One of us always leaves the other eating dust. But this time, we stayed right with each other while we read. Lol, maybe we've matured too ;) Lol. Actually I think the reality is that Nikki and I were traumatized by the events of Beck, and there was no way we were reading any part of this book alone. Regardless, I could not put this book down. I mean, I did to keep pace with Nikki but the book held my attention all the way through. I couldn't wait to see how things unfolded for Drew and Olivia.

When this one opened I kinda wondered what the hell was going on. I know it's been a while since I read the last book in the series, but I had a clue who I was looking for as characters and none of them were there. I kept reading, hoped it would connect, but in the meantime, I loved Riley and her zest for life.

Riley and Olivia were great together. I loved how Riley brought up Olivia's spirits. Riley at her "work" was so funny, as was when she found her "giant". Drew was really good with her, pretty much let her do what she wanted with him and talked his ear off. It did seem odd that all of a sudden Drew wanted to be more active in Olivia's life and by default Riley's. Yet even as I say that I loved what they were building, Olivia and Drew were a cute couple.

Color me rocked when Drew revealed his past, that was a big, HOLY SHIT moment. Bigger when Sway shows up and burst through what little walls Drew still had. I thought Olivia did a great job of rolling with things, of supporting the now Zeke as he started to come back to his dead life and what all that would mean.

Zeke and Olivia going back home to those that thought he was dead was so much, so much emotion coming from them all. It was easy to see why Zeke was scared, all those he loved and a grown ass son, so much there. I was glad to see it all went well, despite the punch that happened. I loved that Olivia got to see how loved Zeke was, to share with these people what she knew of him. You could see how the two of them and Riley would fit in, so easily.

It really sucked how the trip got cut short and the trouble it caused for Zeke and Olivia on the way home, But you knew that Zeke and his guys would take care of things, nothing like this would every happen again. It made the ending all the sweeter, these 2 deserved the happy ending they found!

[BOOK REVIEW]

THE LONG WAY HOME (Corps Security #6) by: Harper Sloan

▫️Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
▫️Spice rating 🌶🌶🌶

First if all, I would Like to thank the amazing Harper Sloan for this amazing opportunity. I've been a huge fan of hers since 2014 and will continue to love and support her forever! Axel is mine btw 🥰💕

We, Alpha babes have been waiting for this very moment in our entire lives. It's been four or five years since Harper wrote something and we missed her sooo much... but now she is back! SHE IS FINALLY BACK in the bookworld and our favorite Alpha Man's are back in action.

This comeback means so much to me because Harper is one of the authors that I look up to and love and when I got the news of her comeback my heart just felt lighter.

The Long Way Home is the 6th book of the Corps Security Series. For me, it's really a MUST that you should start from the very first book of the series to really know what the hell is happening. I SWEAR TO YOU GUYS THAT IT'S SUPER WORTH IT!

This book ruined me... in a good way. I was speechless when I reached the end of the story. It's an emotional masterpiece. Heart, wrenching story that will always stay in your heart forever. It's such a beautiful story and seeing all of my favorite characters back made my heart so full of happiness 😭🥰❤

WOW! This can't be it? <3

Ok confession I have read other books from this author but missed this series …  Fear not! I already bought the Corp series with all the books and will be diving in. The Long Way Home was so good. Beautiful story full of hearts and feels. This was more than a love story, it also about heartache, love and loss. The hero is mysterious – he has known the heroine for years, coming to her coffee shop daily, but he never get close to her. But why? The heroine is hard working, running a business and taking care of her adorable little niece. Olivia has always been drawn to the mysterious customer, but Drew is so unattainable … well because he never talked to her. It’s almost like he doesn’t want ever get close to anyone. What is Drew up to? I think with a plot like this you would have to go into blind … it’s process and no spoilers allowed  The ending is worth the wait … such an emotional, heart wrenching story but promise will fill your soul with happiness at the end.

Welcome back to the corps security team! This is the final book within this series. Olivia hasn’t always had an easy time but through a tragedy she is making life work the best she can. One of her happy moments is when Drew comes into her coffee shop daily. He is a mystery and one Olivia wouldn’t mind figuring out but who is Drew really? I won’t say more but fans of this series will be ecstatic to go back into all the memories that is the corps security family. A beautiful and emotional feel good romance. Told in dual POV

Wow just wow!! When you make a come back you don’t mess around Harper. That book was everything I could have wanted and more. I should’ve guessed who they were but you shocked me. There was so much heartbreak and love and sass in that book it was unreal. These characters were fantastic especially the little old soul and her giant. The only one I didn’t like was that one guy. You know who I’m talking about. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who has loved the Corps Security books and if you have read them yet you damn well need to.as Sway would YOLT, hmmm, sugar britches.

5 SHE’S BAAAAACCCCCKKKK Stars!!

This is probably one of the most difficult and shortest reviews I’ve ever written. If you are a Harper Sloan devotee like me, you’ll understand why this review is short and vague beyond reason!

Here’s what I can tell you, this is a 2023 Top Read for me and we’re back in the world that I love more than life itself and that I visit on an annual basis. This book is filled with so many emotions I couldn’t contain them as I was reading. I found myself crying on more than one occasion. There are moments in this book that are jaw dropping. We get new characters to love and a love story that is one for the ages.

Harper Sloan has been away from the book world for a long 5 years, but I can tell you with all certainty she hasn’t lost her storytelling ability, in fact it’s superb so any fears she may have had releasing this baby into the world should be assuaged because SHE’S BACK AND SHE’S ON FIRE!!!!

5 Stars~~

I can’t not be biased.
Because… HARPER SLOAN!!!

description

Yeah.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I fangirled like crazy and talked my husband’s ear off about Harper’s older books, this new one, her Spotify playlists and the now very real possibility of the Hope Town series continuing as well as all her other unfinished series.
Seriously…

description
I would have reread all of Corps Security first before this, but I only saw this was coming out a few days before it was released. Doesn’t matter though. I loved it.

I don’t think there is a way to accurately describe how much I missed this world and these characters except to say that even with the bitchy side of my mind that found things to tear at with her nitpicking ways, I refuse to include those comments in this review for the simple reason that even when I’m being bitchy about whatever bugs me, all that shit really boils down to is that I was/am invested.

Now. About this story.
WHAT A FUCKING WAY TO COME BACK~~

description
Tears. Happiness too, but damn, soooo many tears.
If you know you know.
Plus, here’s one potential spoiler I have to get off my chest…

I’ll try to be patient, but now that I’ve read this…
I just can’t wait for whatever comes next.🖤🖤🖤

Oh my Stars!! Ok first everyone will have to bear with me on this review because I will not do it justice in any way shape form or fashion!!! But this book was absolutely perfection in every way possible!!! Like also can it also be perfectly named too because it seemed it took her a long way to get back home and can I say welcome back baby!!! This is exactly where you belong because this book, oh my goodness this book was so amazing that I can't even put into words what it did to me. Like it put back pieces of my soul that I didn't even know I was missing. Like this book made my heart so happy. I mean it made my heart hurt in so many ways but for the most part it made my heart happier than its been in a long time. Guy's Harper is back and I can't wait for her to start putting books out again because I have missed her beautiful words so much!!! I can't say anything else about this book because I don't want to give any secrets away. But I wish I could give this book 1,000 Stars because it deserves it!!! I highly highly recommend it but make sure you have read the Corps Security books first!!!

All. The. Stars.

I have seriously missed Harper’s words and her incredible imagination. When she announced a new book was coming, I honestly couldn’t wait to get my hands on it-and the best part of it was, it was going to be in the Corps world.

Let me just say it was soooooo worth the wait. The Long Way Home was everything I thought it would be. It was full of heat, family, friendships, and so much heart. Going back to this crew felt like coming home. I loved every single second of it.

As much as I want to shout from the rooftops every single detail that I loved, I can’t. All I’m going to say is that you have no idea what you are in store for. I promise that you will love the journey-because I know I did.

Oh my heart!! Olivia and Drew’s story gave me all the feels. I am not going to spoil this book for anyone but if you have read the previous Corp Security books this book will mean so much to you.

I absolutely loved Olivia and Drew’s story so much. The connection between these two was so strong and powerful. And when you add in Riley and her giants it made me adore this book so much more. I wish I could say more to explain how fantastic this book was but I just don’t want to chance giving anything away. Just know you will go through a myriad of emotions and in the end your heart may be just as joyous as mine was. Welcome back Harper Sloan!!

Oh gosh. Where to start. I guess we can start and end with a dumpster fire. I think that I was curious more than anything, because I thought this series was so long over. But just kidding!

The plot holes were huge. The characters were dull. And the entire story was so repetitive.

Riley was, quite possibly, one of the most annoying child characters I’ve ever read in my life. And I’ve read a lot of books.

This might do it for the hard core followers who have been reading and rereading the Corps Security Books for the last 10+ years, but it definitely wasn’t for me.

Harper Sloan is a one of my favorite authors so when this book was released I went into this story blind. And I was so not ready for the huge surprise in it that had me ecstatic and filling me with so much joy. Loved Olivia and Drew together! The story sucked me in and didn’t let me go till the end. This was a gripping, steamy, real and so emotional read. This story is so beautifully written that you literally feel the emotions of the characters. The little one Riley aka Bean absolutely won my heart too. ❤️
