Hello everyone, I'm Mr. C Reviewer, and tonight we're discussing (She/Her) Hayley Anderton's book, Sloth which is the first book in the The Last Girls on Earth Series. This was my first time reading one of her work and after reading this one I do think that I would like to give her other book's a go.

Sloth was first Published October 1st, 2022. The narrative, told using first person perspective following Raven, Riley and Karissa. Which spans 12 chapters and 104 pages which also includes an epilogue.

Summary:
In a world ravaged by overpopulation, poverty, and radical politics, three resilient young girls - Raven, Riley, and Karissa - navigate a society stacked against them. As a thief, a cage fighter, and a soldier, they defy the odds to survive. However, when the government unveils a drastic solution to the crisis, their struggle intensifies. Forced to adapt in a hostile environment, they must confront the ultimate question: will they emerge as the last girl standing or succumb to the weight of a crumbling world?

Review: -I have had some of the writer’s books on my Wishlist for a while. As a fan of dystopian literature, I was thrilled when she kindly offered to send me a copy of this book. I eagerly accepted the opportunity, and for this review, I decided to revisit the book since I had initially become completely engrossed in the storyline during my first read. To my delight, I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The narrative of the story exhibits a commendable level of craftsmanship; however, I believe that a further round of editing would be advantageous to address recurring elements and ensure coherence across the unfolding events. Notably, the book excels in providing intricate character details that effortlessly transport the reader into a vividly depicted world. The exposition is skilfully executed, offering a comprehensive understanding of the setting. Moreover, the inclusion of numerous gripping action sequences adds an element of excitement that kept me engaged, eagerly flipping through each page.

In my opinion, I believe the story would have been more engaging if it had been narrated from a single character’s perspective. Oftentimes, when I am immersed in a story, the frequent shifts in point of view can disrupt the flow and create suspenseful moments for characters whose outcomes are only revealed after the perspective changes. This aspect can be somewhat frustrating for me as a reader. I would have preferred to follow either Raven exclusively or experience the world through the eyes of Jonah, her younger brother.

I appreciated the distinctiveness of each character’s individual storyline in the book, as they were well-developed and didn’t blend together. The narratives were independent of each other, united only by the overarching global issue, resulting in a compilation of each girl’s unique journey. The depth of the characters evoked empathy within me, a crucial aspect when engaging with dystopian literature. Furthermore, I admired the innovative approach taken with the characters’ inner dialogues, setting this book apart from others in its genre. Personally, I found this book to be particularly unsettling due to its striking realism and relatability, at times evoking strong emotional responses where tears welled up. This book evoked similarities to two TV shows, “What Happened to Monday” and “The 100,” due to the presence of a one-child law in their respective storylines.

-I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the lives of the characters, particularly finding a special connection with the siblings, Raven and Jonah. Raven exudes warmth and kindness, with a great sense of humour. She demonstrates unwavering care for her brother and exhibits remarkable resilience in challenging circumstances. Meeting Riley was also a highlight; her tenacity in the face of adversity was truly inspiring. The glimpse into the community she is a part of added depth to the narrative. Phoenix and her circle of friends portrayed a beautiful bond of mutual support and camaraderie. Wren left a lasting impression, and I eagerly anticipate encountering her again hopefully in future instalments of the series. Her kindness, exemplified by the thoughtful birthday care package she gave Raven, also resonated deeply with me.

-I am eagerly anticipating the unfolding of each girl’s narrative in the upcoming book. I am particularly fascinated by the prospect of their paths intertwining and found the epilogue to be reminiscent of the climactic conclusions seen in the Maze Runner series, which I found quite captivating.

-I was looking forward to the chance to fully immerse myself in both the written text and the auditory experience of this book. To my disappointment, after conducting some research, I discovered that an audiobook adaptation is not currently available. Personally, I find great joy and value in the seamless combination of reading the text while simultaneously listening to an audiobook. I hold onto hope for the eventual release of an audiobook version. Furthermore, having an audiobook rendition would not only enhance the accessibility of this narrative but also broaden its audience to a more diverse and extensive range of readers.

I rate each story I read out of 10 and for this one, I give it an 8. Remember this was what I thought about the book personally and I suggest that you give it a go for yourself.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I love Hayley's other books so wanted to go into this with an open mind. It may be a short book, but it packs a punch! From the first chapter I was hooked. I thought all 3 girls would know each other, but no, it's 3 separate stories centred around the one main global issue. It sure is a scary world out there and my eyes were glued to the page wanting to see how things progressed.

I love all the characters, but I love Karissa the most. She was very relatable. I felt for all of them and am looking forward to the next book (at least I assume there's another book!) The story is so scary because it seems so real. I definitely got Hunger Games vibes.

Despite is being YA fiction it does have a lot of hard hitting topics and graphic scenes so I'd check trigger warnings first.

Hayley has created a world that feels real from the first lines. The atmosphere is bleak but at the same time so full of life! We follow three very different characters, who are far from perfect, but this is what makes them believable and endearing. I can't wait to discover what happens next!

The Last Girls on Earth feels like a perfect mix of The Purge, Teen Killers Club and The Institute whilst still having its flare of originality.

The book introduces us to Raven, Riley and Karissa, each chapter is told POV and lets us discover how different lives are affected by the crumbling country and shocking government decisions…

As it stands the country is in disarray, it’s overpopulated, poverty ridden and unless you are part of the elite then chances of survival are slim. The government comes up with a crazy “problem solving” scheme to irradiate the issues then things suddenly go from bad to worse.

The first chapter packed a punch and instantly had me hooked, the only downside to the book is having to wait to find out what happens next!

The Last Girls on Earth is a great start to a new series. I couldn’t wait to dive into The Last Girls on Earth as it is one of my favorite genres of all time. And once I picked up The Last Girls on Earth I couldn’t lay it down as it drew me in from the first page pulling me deeper and deeper in until the world around me disappeared. I love end-of-the-world-type stories.

The Last Girls on Earth is told from different characters' points of view. I love stories like this as I believe that you can get to know more characters this way. I also believe that you get more of the story as well.

The Last Girls on Earth is a story that makes you stop and think wondering and knowing that this could be our world one day. It makes you wonder if this is a possible future for us all.

When I was reading The Last Girls on Earth I felt as if I was a part of their world. The descriptions were so well done I could see it all playing out in my head. I could see their world all around me. I could see all the characters and it was so easy to picture them in their surroundings and their clothes.

The Last Girls on Earth is set in Britain. In a world where the people outnumber the food available. The Last Girls on Earth is a story about three girls who live in Britain and their way of life, a life that neither one belongs. One is a thief, one is a cage fighter, and the other is a soldier.

Their world is changing and changing fast. Each girl must fight if they are going to survive. Who will be standing when it is all over? What must they endure before their new life can begin? Can they save themselves and the ones they care about at the same time?

I sorely enjoyed reading The Last Girls on Earth and can’t wait to see what lies ahead for the survivors. What will life have to offer them when their fighting is done? What will their world look like when it is all over? I can’t wait to find out in the next book.

I highly recommend The Last Girls on Earth to all fans of end of the world books! Grab your copy of The Last Girls on Earth today!

The Last Girls on Earth is a fantastic entry into the young adult dystopian genre!

The three protagonists are brilliantly distinct, with their contrasting backgrounds & circumstances shaping their personalities believably;

Raven - who scrapes by in perpetual poverty after losing her mother and being neglected by her broken, addicted father, is thrown into further turmoil when she is targeted for termination by the corrupt, elitist government, who intend to cull the weak and elevate the elites using the X-drug, which empowers the recipient with superhuman abilities. Fleeing with her sickly brother in tow, her only goal is escape and hopefully, survive.

Riley - a talented and ruthless pit fighter who has built a comfortable life putting down challengers in the arena. Her stability is shattered when her boss plans to close the fighting pits in order to secure the X-drug for herself. Desperately, Riley convinces her to arrange one last fight which will pay out comfortably for everyone, but at an unthinkable cost...

Karissa - a soldier in training, selected for the military programme from a young age, who struggles to gain the respect of her squad mates, not helped by her jealous and competitive brother attempting to undermine and antagonize her at every turn. Gradually gaining the respect and favour of both her team and her commanding officer, Karissa is groomed for a mission far darker than she is aware of...

An absolutely gripping tale - must read!!

This is not my usual genre, so I was unsure what to expect. I knew I'd like it though as Hayley is one of the author's of the Apocalypse series that I love!

Did I like it? Actually, I loved it! This was SO good. Terrifying in fact, could something like this happen? I think some parts of this story deffo could! A horrifying thought if you don't meet a certain standard of some of these high and mighty folk!

I loved the different character perspectives. I felt most connection with Raven and I'm looking forward to following more of her story, although slightly anxious about it too. Her first chapter, which was also the first chapter of the book, completely hooked me. I could feel the heart dropping moment of realisation when the national announcement was made! And then her dad......
Riley reminded me alot of The Hunger Games, it was pretty brutal! Kids killing kids basically.
Karissa was an interesting concept and one I haven't come across often. I wouldn't say they were the most likeable characters (think that's the intention!) but pretty gripping following their weird situation.

This book is quite short (about 100 pages), it grips you instantly which makes for an overall quick read as you want to know more and more. It's such a smart idea and was written really well. Although these kind of books scare me a bit (in terms of "could this happen?") I still find them fascinating!

Highly recommend 😁

This book was such a good fast paced dystopian YA. It has great world building that's easy to understand yet has such an almost eerie feel to it, it's literally a world based on survival of the fittest.

I enjoyed reading about the political side of it, the reasoning behind why the government did things the way they did was so interesting and creepy as its fairly close to how our current society is heading towards.

I also really enjoyed reading from the 3 POVs, we get three awesome female leads from different backgrounds; a thief, a cage fighter and a soldier. I was kind of hoping they'd all meet, but at the same time I liked the separation. My favourite character was Raven, who cares for her brother and do what she must to survive.

The novella is short but packs a punch, it's filled with suspense and a massive build up to the ending, and though it ends on a cliffhanger I enjoyed the small amount of resolution we get; the main characters now have a mission and know what they must do next.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have read this book, and I'd definitely reccomend it for a short but action packed read!

Three girls from entirely different backgrounds are trying their hardest to survive a Britain that has not been kind to them. When the government announces its solution to the poverty, barrenness, and overcrowding, Raven, Riley, and Karissa will have to fight even harder to survive.

I actually really enjoyed this one! I was a bit worried when I saw how long it was, but there was enough information in it that I was not confused, and each girls' story had me intrigued. This is the first in a series of novellas, so I am excited to see how each girls' story turns out.

Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for a review!

Dystopian, futuristic Britain. In an already very ragged society, the government decides to filter people and end overpopulation through their ability to pay for a medicine that will keep them alive.
Raven, Riley, and Karissa. A thief. A cage fighter. A soldier. The girls were already used to fighting through the struggles of society, each in their own way, but in this true fight for survival, what are they willing to do to continue to survive the cruel cards they were dealt?

I really like dark dystopias and you really get involved in the main characters' conundrums and that's what I found captivating about this book. The author paints a vivid picture of a bleak and desolate future that is eerily believable. The premise of a government filtering people based on their ability to pay for a life-saving medicine is a terrifying thought, and the author does an excellent job of exploring life under such harsh environments for people that can't afford the

The three main characters are strong and complex female protagonists who are forced to make difficult choices in order to survive. I appreciated how the author gave each character a unique backstory and motivation, which made them feel more real and relatable.
The plot is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. The world-building is also well-done, with enough detail to make the setting feel fully realized without overwhelming the reader with exposition.

Overall, I would highly recommend it to fans of dystopian fiction. It's a gripping and thought-provoking read that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. Can't wait to read the second volume!

A short but sweet novella. And I mean sweet in that it’s a refreshing new story with plenty of action. I was hooked from the very first line - which was amazing by the way.
This book feels like the purge meets the UK show Misfits.
Each chapter follows a different young adult growing up in this apocalyptic world in the stages where the government still has some semblance of control over society. They’re grasping at straws and trying to control the final dregs of the population, turning them against each other.

Eerily, it does paint a picture of what I imagine the UK to be like should something like this ever happen - with references to factual events that have affected our country.
In an accurate theme of the governments greed trumps all, Hayley depicts a ravaged Britain, where the working class and poor fight for scraps of food and accept that chances of survival are slim.

It isn’t a genre I usually read, but I’m so glad I picked up Hayley’s book as it is a refreshing take on the popular themes.

I instantly fell in love with the book (and Wren).

The story was amazing, it kept me hooked and I didn't want to stop reading. The characters were incredible. The story follows three girls with very different lives and I loved reading about them all, which is odd since there's usually one or two I don't like. Each girl gets chapters that are written in her POV which can make keeping the time harder for me but it was done well in this book, also it didn't take place over a huge time period so that also helped make it easier to keep up.

This is book 1 and I think it is the perfect introduction to the characters, their lives and the overall story. If you like dystopia (or want a book to ease you into the genre) I recommend this one!
I can't wait for book 2!!

The Last Girls on Earth by Hayley Anderton, a five book series dystopian tale set in a future Britain plagued by overpopulation, poverty, and political unrest. The story centres on three protagonists: Raven, a thief; Riley a cage fighter; and Karissa a soldier. Their journeys are distinct yet interconnected, offering unique perspectives on survival in a fractured world.

The author’s writing is sharp and immersive, creating a vivid and unsettling vision of a reality not too far removed from a possibility if I’m being honest. The narrative’s fast pace keeps the tension high, making it difficult to put the book down.

The characters are compelling, with diverse backgrounds and struggles that add depth and relatability to their stories. The interplay between individual struggles and the larger societal issues enriches the narrative, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Overall, The Last Girls on Earth is a gripping thought-provoking read. Highly recommended if you love fast-paced, character-driven dystopian stories that offer a mix of action, emotion, and social commentary.

I was very excited to read this book and it really didn’t disappoint! I’m not going to include any spoilers just my overall thoughts.
This book is particularly scary because it just fees so real and hits close to home at times, a few points I could feel myself welling up ready to cry. The 3 girls stories are relatable and heart wrenching. There are some very sad moments and equally some very intense moments. It definitely brought out a bunch of emotions. I definitely recommend giving this a read! I’m looking forward to reading more from Hayley Anderton

Definitely had Hunger Games vibes (which I love that series) but still told a tale of its own. This story is told from the POV of three girls in the same dystopian society (all from different perspectives - one in a lowly class, one kind of in a "middle" one, and someone who is clearly a soldier who has all the benefits). I love the different perspectives; however, there were times it was a little confusing for me (maybe it would have been easier to change Riley or Raven's name as they both begin with R and would trip me up!) But this is a MUST read for anyone who is a fan of HG style stories, YA stories, or dystopian stories as a whole. Anderton is an incredible author whose has a promising future.

The Last Girls on Earth Book 1: Sloth

I'm glad to have discovered this young adult story set in a disturbingly dystopian Britain.

Hayley Anderton is a new author to me. Dystopian is not my usual genre to read
but I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it.

It's confidently written, all the characters and the pace of the story really draw you in, making you invested in their plight.

I particularly was drawn to Raven: ' I’d give anything right now to be play fighting again with my old friend, but I left that life behind a long time ago.'
And Riley: ' But I like to think I’m a cockroach – a bit gross at times, but kind of invincible.'
And Karissa. 'I have all the makings of a great soldier, and in theory, I should be well-liked and respected for that. So why don’t they like me?'

Each chapter is told from the perspective of a character.

The chapter before the epilogue is brilliant, so emotionally charged. Brought a tear to my eyes. Loved it. The epilogue sets up the reader for the next book in this series!

Highly recommended.

I just wanna say thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book for an honest review!

TW: death of a parent, alcoholism, suicide, genocide, violence and more.

“if we stop to wander why we even bother, we might stop entirely”

I absolutely love dystopian books, because I’m a sucker for real world scenarios that are warped and twisted- but this one was actually kinda scary. some of the things that were happening actually reflected the events in todays world and the actions that happened were not a far jump from things we’ve already seen. particularly the discussions around classism and the dangers that the poor face. I think having this real world reflection made the book really enjoyable in a weird way and I definitely couldn’t put it down.

I love the plot, as we flick between three different characters and their POVs. If you’re like me and have to have books that grab your attention straight away, this is the book for you. three distinct characters, short snappy chapters and three different plots all linking to one major one. the way it was written made it super easy to read but also provided such fresh, interesting perspectives that I loved. we follow a thief, living in the slums trying to protect her brother (who is illegal and could get them all killed), a soldier who is training to kill the lives of millions and a cage fighter who fought tooth and nail to survive. let’s not forget that we have bisexual and lesbian characters too! I mean queer girls fighting for their lives in a world trying to kill them? definitely my kinda book.

my only criticism is that I found myself wanting more !! I love that it’s short and easy to get through, but when I got to the end I was like ??? nooo. this is definitely a book where you’ll want to own them all as they’re just so bingeable. if you’re looking for something easy, fun and quick- check this out!

The Last Girls on Earth by Hayley Anderton is a dystopian YA story following three main characters as they navigate social and political upheaval in future Britain.

I loved every minute! Each of the girls brought something new to the story: a 17-year-old living in poverty who is responsible for taking care of her younger brother when their parents desert them, a young girl who fights to the death for the sake of shelter, and an officer fighting for their place of power in a military-esque institution. Not only were the stories completely diverse (and queer!!!), but the author told their story with distinct voices that enriched the characterisation wonderfully. I was so impressed with the way that, despite the first person POV, I always knew who was speaking from the tone and language. Full of gritty action, suspense, pain, and the fight to stay afloat in a broken country, you absolutely want this book on your shelf. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series after a dramatic cliffhanger — and Hayley Anderton is swiftly becoming one of my favourite authors!

The Last Girls on Earth was a good Dystopian read, something I've been missing here lately. I felt pretty bogged down, but somewhere along the story, I got sucked in and couldn't wait to see what the next character was up to.

I really liked he three MCs. Each girl comes from a different "faction." None of the girls knew each other, and the stories are not connected in any way other than the global issue at hand, making the book a collection of each girls' unique experience.

Don't be deterred by the short length of the book, the author packs so much detail, the story is well fleshed out!

I am excited to see how each girls story turns out in the next book.

I don't usually enjoy books with this much action in them but I LOVED this. And it reminded me why I adore dystopian books so much!

But holy hell, that chapter before the epilogue got to me and really made me feel quite emotional.

We follow three different girls, Raven, Riley and Karissa (the last is definitely for Divergent fans) and I enjoyed all their unique stories so much. And I can't believe where the book ended! I need more!

I really enjoyed reading The Last Girls on Earth. The storytelling is clever, and the plot is engaging. Raven's storyline was my favorite. I couldn't wait to read more of her chapters.
The novel is set in a world that has been destroyed by overpopulation. The author's vivid and descriptive writing paints a bleak picture of what our world could become if we do not take care of it. The characters are well-developed, and their struggles are depicted in a realistic manner given their circumstances, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their journey. The book has a mixture of Hunger Games vibes with a touch of the dystopian lifestyle depicted in Ready Player One. I'm excited to continue with this series.

TLGOE tells the story of three female protagonists - from different backgrounds and lifestyles - as they do whatever it takes to survive under the harsh laws of a government in charge of an over-populated crisis. Unlike other books with various POVs, I found myself equally invested in each of the protagonists’ chapters. There is backstory and depth to each character - not just the main girls - and you can tell that Anderton has devoted a lot of time to them. The stand-out for me is the dystopian world Anderton has created that feels so real and hauntingly similar to our own.

I’m really excited to see where this story goes and how the characters develop along the way!
